THE RUNAWAYS! AND THE MOVIE TOO

The Runaways were THE all-women band who performed proto-punk hard rock music in the 1970s.

Widely believed at the time to have been a novelty act (WRONG) formed by producer Kim Fowley, who thought the notion of five teenage girls dressed in leather and lingerie performing heavy metal music was highly marketable (RIGHT), the band released its eponymous first album in 1976. The band’s lineup was:

* Cherie Currie, lead vocals and keyboards
* Joan Jett, rhythm guitar and vocals
* Lita Ford, lead guitar
* Jackie Fox, bass guitar and vocals
* Sandy West, drums and vocals

FAST FORWARD TO 2010

THE MOVIE "THE RUNAWAYS"

“The Runaways,” which debuted at this year’s Sundance Festival, will also hold a special premiere at SXSW. The film will premiere during the music festival on Thursday, March 18th at the Paramount Theatre in Austin with several cast and crew members attending.

Actresses Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have put their new rock star skills to good use by re-recording four Runaways tracks for the soundtrack of the upcoming biopic about the all-girl band.

The songs will be part of the soundtrack, alongside tunes from David Bowie, MC5, The Stooges, Sex Pistols and Joan Jett. It's the first time either actress has contributed to the soundtrack of a movie, reported imdb.com.

Stewart, who portrays Joan Jett in the film, and Fanning, who plays Cherie Currie, have revamped The Runaways Queens of Noise and Dead End Justice together, while Fanning has also re-recorded the solo number Cherry Bomb California Paradise.

The soundtrack is pretty kick-ass featuring David Bowie, MC5, The Stooges and Joan Jett and is now available for pre-order at Runaways Soundtrack
