Just got off the phone with my girlfriend Cathy and this had just happened where she lives in Virginia Beach, VA. I was listening via phone to breaking news on her television. Here is the latest news so far... Both pilots are safe and no news on any deaths on the ground as of yet.. RK

A Navy jet has just crashed near a major road in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Cmdr. Phil Rosi, a spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic, has confirmed that a Navy F/A-18 Hornet, a two-seat jet, has crashed in the vicinity of Birdneck Rd. Rosi said preliminary reports indicate that two parachutes were seen, which may mean that the two pilots were able to eject safely.

The plane belonged to VFA (Strike Fighter Squadron) 106, a training squadron. The crash was reported shortly after noon, according to emergency dispatchers. Virginia State Police have shut down Interstate 264 in both directions, says spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Virginia Department of Transportation traffic cameras show thick, black smoke rising from the Birdneck Road. Grazia Moyers, spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Police Department, also confirmed to WAVY.com that the Navy fighter jet went down.

3 people unaccounted for, but not reported as missing either. Cat toll is possibly up to three now, haven't heard about any other pets! Heard it smells like a forrest fire near there. Red Cross got everyone that didn't have a place to stay into a hotel, and a cash card. They had everyone register at the shelter, to keep count of the residents. Everyone was bringing food to the shelter, but it is now being used for the response teams to rest and eat!

All people accounted for as of this morning, alive and well! What a miracle that the only injuries to the 5 people on the ground was smoke inhalation, "shock", and one policeman fell. Everyone but one pilot was released the same night, the other pilot is in fair condition with non-life threatening injuries.
Pets had their own shelter to stay at. (Actually a brand-new facility as of a couple of months ago!)
Now the flame retardant foam is bubbling out of the sewer drains in the curbs. Hope there won't be any environmental impact to the Chesapeake Bay via the Lynnhaven Water Shed!
