TV STAR DALE ROBERTSON DIED AT 89

One of my very favorite TV stars was Dale Robertson. Dale was handsome, dramatic, funny, and compelling to watch...RIP cowboy....

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Dale Robertson, the star of scores of Hollywood Westerns in the 1950s and 1960s, has died at the age of 89 in Southern California, Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla said on Thursday.

Robertson, who was best known for his role of special agent Jim Hardie in the NBC television series "Tales of Wells Fargo" from 1957-1962, died on Tuesday, the hospital said.

The "Sitting Bull" star had been in poor health for about two years and had a cancer diagnosis last week, his niece, Nancy Love Robertson, told The Oklahoman newspaper.

Born Dayle Lymoine Robertson in Harrah, Oklahoma, in 1923, the actor attracted the attention of Hollywood agents after a Los Angeles photographer posted his photo in a display window.

Robertson, who served in Europe and Africa during World War Two, starred in 60 films and television shows over his five-decades acting career, starting out with roles in 1950s Westerns such as "Devil's Canyon" and "Dakota Incident." FULL STORY

MACHINEGUN THOMPSON, JOHNNY BEE BADANJEK AND KIMMER...

Johnny Bee Badanjek and Machinegun Thompson
photo: Len Beste

Wow what a fun day this was...I had been trying to arrange a drum duel between Detroit Wheels legendary drummer Johnny "Bee" Badanjek and The MC5's legendary drummer Dennis "Machinegun" Thompson.  Details were just not going with the flow as they say...

Then I got a call one night from Bee and he invited Dennis and me to the People's Art Festival at Russell Industrial Center where he was displaying his paintings.  Bee said if I brought Den down there we could film the two Detroit drum titans together chatting...

Dennis and I set off for Detroit.  Den had just purchased this cool Sony Handycam and we were just learning how to work it.  (Have my own now with lots of practice hours!!)

Richard Peardon and Johnny Bee Badanjek

The guys are old pals and had such a fun time together....I thought I'd post these videos again for my newer friends and readers.....

MC5 PHOTOGRAPHER LENI SINCLAIR

Leni Sinclair

We just LOVE Leni Sinclair...just the nicest woman...such generousity of spirit she possesses.  I have had the great pleasure to have met Ms. Sinclair many times recently and a few times long ago in Ann Arbor...

Here are a few randm thoughts I have concerning Leni and her life's work...

Leni captured the younger generation's rebellion, music, art, and to me freedom with her photo and video cameras.  How forward thinking Leni was... Without Leni the MC5, The Stooges, The UP, and many other Detroit rock bands may never have been so legendary 40 years later.  Her vision through the viewfinder was just amazing...

Now days... it is the new digital age where everyone is shooting photos and video with their cell phones...Leni used to have to tote very heavy and expensive equipment to all the gigs. How she did it I'll never know.  I can hold both of my cameras in one hand!

Leni's vision through that viewfinder was just amazing...So please go meet her in Roseville...give her a hug for me and buy all her stuff! xxK

Dear Friends,

If you live in the Detroit area and have nothing better to do on Sunday afternoon (March 3, 2013), why not check out the Record Show in Roseville. It's always fun and interesting, and you can even buy food and beer there. I myself will be there selling my photos, books, CDs, T-shirts, etc. The flyer has all the details.

Thank you for checking it out, and thank you for being my friend.

Love, Leni Sinclair

This was such a fun day with Machinegun and Leni together!

ARTIST NINA FRIDAY'S EARLY RUSSIAN LIFE...

I first met Ms Nina Friday on her birthday in 2009.  We met at the first Ruiner's gig I ever saw. I fell in love with Nina and The Ruiners band and then discovered Nina's paintings later.  She is a phenomenon... so humble, so gorgeous, and so talented. Nina's story is so compelling. I really didn't know the back story of Nina's life before she came to the US. Gratefully she has created a much better world for herself..yet... sadness remains... watch her story... We love you Nina....XK

A beautiful documentary video about Nina's life. Created by Working Pictures, Inc.,

Nina, a beautiful Russian Immigrant escaped the Russian mob and has built 2 successful  careerS in Detroit. Hear her poignant story about the murder of her parents and her eventual escape from communist rule.

Nina Friday is a self taught painter and musician born and raised in St. Petersburg Soviet Russia. Her paintings are inspired by the history, the people and dark beauty of ancient Russia. After the tragic murder of her parents by hand of the Russian mafia, she fled to the United States, leaving all she knew and had behind. Despite the despair and financial setbacks, she persevered and followed creative pursuits.

Lonely and isolated in a strange new country, and without family to rely on, she worked difficult manual labor positions, took odd modeling jobs and slept on floors and couches all the while creating a future for herself, and honing her skills as a self taught visual artist.

The subject matter in her works are primarily inspired from the dingy, poor and Dickensesque playmates and street urchins from her childhood, coupled with her own experiences and memories of growing up in a turbulent and impoverished Russia. The friends and culture she holds dear, are remembered by her for their blue blood elegance and stoic veil of sadness, reminiscent of persecuted saints and the lost nobles of Imperial Russia.

STARS LEFT OUT OF 2013 OSCAR SHOW MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

Andy Griffith (Face in the Crowd)

It happens every year: a beloved celeb gets left out of the annual Oscars In Memoriam segment. So who ended up getting snubbed this year?

Andy Griffith was the most noticeable star not on the list. The actor, who passed away last July, rose to prominence with his role in Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd," along with the television series "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Matlock."

Actor Alex Karras also missed out on the memorial tribute. Karras had starred in films including "Blazing Saddles" and "Buffalo '66."

Another big omission: Richard Dawson, who, in addition to his hosting duties on "Family Feud," appeared in such films as "The Running Man" and the TV show "Hogan's Heroes."

Also left out were Phyllis Diller and Sherman Hensley....guess it is tough to make the list and the families have to really work hard to get their loved one included.... Full Story

HISTORIC DETROIT LANDMARK HOMES ON THE WEB

The David Whitney Jr. House was built by successful lumber baron David Whitney Jr., one of Michigan’s wealthiest citizens and the wealthiest man in Detroit. He was worth more than $15 million at the time of his death in 1900 — about $388 million today, when adjusted for inflation.

The house is constructed using rose-pink South Dakota Jasper stone. It is measured to be 21,000-square-foot  and has 52 rooms (including 10 bathrooms), 218 windows, 20 fireplaces, and a secret vault in the dining room, an elevator, and numerous Tiffany glass windows.

The Tiffany glass windows have been estimated to be worth more than the house itself. The window designs often feature themes oriented around the purpose of the rooms they are located in.

Lawrence Fisher was the most flamboyant of the seven very prosperous Fisher Brothers. Along with his father and brothers, he earned his fortune in the Fisher Brothers Body firm that supplied General Motors. In the mid-1920s, Lawrence Fisher decided to build a magnificent home for himself—one that would clearly indicate his wealth, perhaps more than his good taste.

He selected this isolated corner of Detroit apparently because of his desirable location near Lake St. Clair. From 1925 to 1934, Fisher was not only a principal in Fisher Body but was also president of Cadillac.

C. Howard Crane, the great theater architect of that age, was selected to design the house. He was known for his exhauberant style as illustrated in his Detroit masterpiece—the Fisher Theater.

This was apparently meant to be a huge Mediterranean-style villa similar to some that rich individuals were building in Florida at this time. Fisher was a close friend of William Randolph Hearst who was building his San Simeon estate in California at this time so some think that Fisher wanted a Detroit home to rival San Simeon.

Jerome Croul-Francis Palms Home

Perhaps there is no better example of Queen Anne architecture in metropolitan Detroit than the home you see. Jerome Croul and his brother earned their fortune selling woolens and animals skins in Detroit. Croul came to Detroit and helped establish the Parson and Croul firm that sold woolens and sheepskins. Then Jerome Croul and his brother went into tanning and set up the Croul Brothers Leather Works. Jerome Croul also had a strong interest in public safety and served as Detroit's fire commissioner from 1872 to 1888.

Francis Palms, an immigrant who came to Detroit in 1832 from Antwerp, became a real estate developer. The first generation of wealthy individuals in Detroit built their homes very close to the city center, many of them between the present Jefferson Avenue and the Detroit River. Palms encouraged building along East Jefferson and helped to develop it as prestigious. Palms built his own home on East Jefferson in 1846.

Berry Gordy, Jr. /Nels Michelson Residence

The Michelson-Young Estate, more popularly known as the Gordy Mansion or the Motown Mansion, is one of the larger and more elegant homes located in the City of Detroit. It has a storied history and has been owned by several of the city’s most prosperous individuals, most popularly known among them, Berry Gordy, Jr., founder of Motown Records.

Interestingly, each of the owners was a self-made millionaire in his time and was a tremendous visionary. One owner, fresco-artist Pablo Davis, known for his work with Diego Rivera at the Detroit Institute of Arts, has his work on permanent display with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

This Italian Renaissance design of the main residence was built in 1917 by Nels Michelson, a Michigan lumber and timber baron. In 1926, the second owner, L.A. Young, substantially renovated the main residence and added a 4,500 square foot athletic building to the two acre estate.

When Hecker decided to build his home on the southeast corner of Ferry and Woodward, the area was still rural.  Hecker bought two lots on Woodward Avenue in 1887 for the price of $27,859 (about $667,000 today). Having a Woodward Avenue address commanded a premium price tag.

“At first, when the Heckers built, there were but two houses near them, the Bowens’ and the Mableys’, and the horse cars only came as far as Forest Avenue, so the few residents beyond had to drive from there to their homes,” the Detroit Free Press wrote in 1933.

DENIZ TEK DETROIT CD AND 2013 AUSTRALIA TOUR DATES

DENIZ TEK's new album is coming out tomorrow February 22nd on Citadel Records in Australia (cd only). A cd and a vinyl version will be released April 1st in the US on Career Records.

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, guitarist, singer and songwriter Deniz Tek's career has now extended over three decades.

Best known in Australia as a founding member of the influential 70s rock band Radio Birdman, Tek has pursued an ongoing musical path that has seen a significant number of solo releases as well as frequent touring and recording with figures emanating from Detroit's iconic bands The Stooges and MC5.

February 22nd marks the long awaited Citadel Records release of Detroit, Tek's first solo album in more than 10 years. Apart from luminous flashes of keyboards and harmonica, Detroit is at its heart, a guitar album, with Tek's vocals and signature guitar playing set against a rock solid rhythm section of veteran musicians.

Mixed at one of America's oldest recording studios, Houston's historic Sugar Hill, the album sounds raw and real with its themes often hard edged. Both sonically and lyrically, it will stand as a major evolutionary step forward for Tek's music as well as being a look back to his early days in Ann Arbor and the Motor City.

"The thrill and drill of Tek's performance was as true as the one I watch repeatedly, on YouTube, by Radio Birdman from Australian TV in 1977. Catch that one anytime. See the legend live every chance you get." David Fricke - Rolling Stone US - 2012.

In support of the album, Deniz and band will tour Australia in February / March before heading to Europe and the US.

BOOTSEY X FRIENDS FLASHBACK!

photo: John P. Harnois

John P. Harnois shot my favorite Bootsey X photos... he wrote me and said this was shot on a roof on Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit.  The girls were called at the time..The Lambchops of Soul.

Valorie aka Sister Dynamite wrote in and said, "This photo was taken on Jeff Grande's roof/patio." "The Boot is very cuddly, so this pose was a piece of yummy cake." That is Kelly-she was post-Lambchop-and me.

"Oh, yeah-I designed those little outfits we had on-I was going to Wayne State University, working as a grad assistant. at the Hilberry in the costume shop." "I found a few scraps laying around to make mine..."

photo: John P. Harnois

Kelly and Valorie were dancer/backup singers with Bootsey on the fabulous Dan Boyd videos that I love.  Here are 3 of them....

Bootsey X and the Lovemasters perform an original song Pony Down feat Bob Mulrooney - vocals, Jeff Grand Gerald Shohan Don Gillespie Robert Steel, Vito Marchione, Debbie Murphy, Valorie Moore Dynomite and Dolomite (Kelly); shot by Dan Boyd for Wizard of Livonia at Mr. Christian's/ Jamison's

The headliner was Bootsey X and the Lovemasters. So the place was full of people I knew, it was packed from long before the first band until long after the last note faded. Bootsey was always a crowd pleaser and this night was no different.

The band played a couple of tunes before Bootsey appeared in his signature shades and dress coat, the crowd went wild and he hadn’t sung a note yet. He milked the reaction like the pro he is, dancing near each band member working the entire room. By the time he started singing everyone was singing along, taping their feet and slamming their beer mugs on the table.

Bootsey was always the peacemaker off-stage, he would tell me hey did you hear that everyone is mad at so and so. Then he proceeded to tell me what so and so had to do to appease everyone. He was always right, usually it was a slight misunderstanding that was easily corrected and Bob gave the advice needed.

Bootsey X is the consummate front man he knows how to use body language to connect with the audience and his insightful tongue in cheek lyrics had everyone laughing and wondering how he got away with calling himself a genius from the waist down for example. For Bootsey it all came natural, I think that happens when you spend years performing from behind a drum kit. Dan Boyd

Detroit's own Genius From The Waist Down, Bootsey X and the Lovemasters feat Bob Mulrooney - vocals, Jeff Grand Gerald Shohan Don Gillespie Robert Steel, Vito Marchione, The Sugarbabes Debbie Murphy and Valorie Moore otherwise known as Dynomite and Dolomite; shot by Dan Boyd for Wizard of Livonia at Mr. Christian's/ Jamison's

TROUBLED COUNTRY STAR MINDY MCCREADY SUICIDE

Just in... sad news for the children of Country Music's Mindy McCready, she passed away from an apparent suicide today.  Mindy has been in trouble for years and her many attempts at drug rehab failed.  Just sad like Whitney....

Official Release

"At 3:31 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, deputies from the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of gun shots fired."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mindy‘s children, friends, and family.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR'S BULGARI JEWELS ON EXHIBIT DURING OSCAR WEEK!

(Reuters) - Famed jeweler Bulgari said on Sunday it would put eight pieces of the late actress Elizabeth Taylor's jewels on display at its Beverly Hills boutique, more than a year after the Hollywood star's world-class collection fetched record prices at auction.

A pair of emerald-and-diamond ear pendants, by Bulgari, 1960, gift from Richard Burton

She wore them at the Paris premiere of Lawrence of Arabia in 1962; she wore them to greet Queen Elizabeth in Washington, in 1976; and they were part of her costume in the V.I.P.s. They were, if such a thing can be said of emerald-and-diamond earrings, ubiquitous.

The exhibition of pieces from that sale will include jewels Taylor obtained and wore during well-documented times in her storied life, including the filming of "Cleopatra," which launched her romance with Richard Burton, Bulgari said.

An emerald-and-diamond flower brooch, by Bulgari, 1960, gift from Richard Burton... “I introduced Elizabeth Taylor to beer and she introduced me to Bulgari.”

Bulgari sapphire sautoir and "trombino" ring. The sapphire sautoir was a gift to Ms. Taylor from Richard Burton in 1972. The centerpiece is set with a sugarloaf cabochon sapphire weighing 52.72 carats.

WE MISS MC5'S MICHAEL DAVIS.....RIP

Michael Davis (June 5, 1943 -- February 17, 2012)

Good morning my friends, sadly today is the one year anniversary of the passing of one of the world's finest people...Michael Davis. Resoundingly loved by the entire planet. I have yet to hear one bad word about this man.  We are thinking of his wife Angela, his children, and his legions of fans today and praying that they are getting along fine now.

This was a tough story to do last year and I was speaking with Cristina LeNoire the other night about Michael and she told me lots of anecdotes about Mike's time in Ann Arbor. Fun time remembering such a beloved man.  I decided today to share some fun things for Mike...RIP cowboy...

Michael Davis (June 5, 1943 -- February 17, 2012) was an American bass guitarist, singer, songwriter and music producer, best known as the bassist of the MC5.

This interview was captured on video in 2011. Gratefully the filmmaker Ron Perry is sharing this interview with Michael's family, friends, fans, and his numerous fans that circle the globe. RIP Michael you were truly loved and will be missed...

After dropping out of the fine arts program at Wayne State University, Davis became the bassist for Detroit's radical proto-punk band the MC5 in 1964, when singer Rob Tyner and guitarist Wayne Kramer decided that they liked Davis's style and wanted him in the band. He played on the band's three original albums, including their debut Kick Out the Jams, and remained in the the group until 1972.

After Mike Davis left the MC5 he continued exploration as a visual artist while serving time at the Lexington Federal Correction Institution for a narcotics violation. During this period, he was tasked with creating oversized abstract paintings for permanent display in the prison’s Visitor Center and administrative offices.

Several years of immersion in life in the desert southwest and world travels with various rock bands left Davis with the inspiration and desire to return to his roots as a painter, studying art along the way at The Armory Center For The Arts in Pasadena, California, the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon, and at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon and Butte Community College/California State University, Chico in Chico, California.

“White Panther/Big World”

In 2009, his painting “White Panther/Big World” appeared on the Cleopatra Records release MC5: The Very Best of MC5.

The non-profit Music Is Revolution Foundation was founded by MC5 bassist Michael Davis to give schools funds & resources to enhance or create music education programs.

OSCAR WIN FOR SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN!!

Authentic...Detroiter Sixto Rodriguez's life is one amazing story.  It's never too late to accomplish a dream....

Searching for Sugar Man is my favorite to win the Best Feature Length Documentary award at The Oscars 2013 - 85th Academy Awards.

Searching for Sugar Man, a film chronicling the life of the American musician Rodriguez, is seen by many Oscars odds makers as the favorite to win the best documentary feature award, having already won in the same category at the Baftas. Although Rodriguez had a huge following in apartheid-era South Africa, few knew of his music in his native US. Now that has all changed with the film's success and Oscar nomination.
