SUPER STAR: JUPITER AND VENUS MERGE TONIGHT

On June 30th, Jupiter and Venus will be merging into what is known as a super-star.

The conjunction of these two planets has been building throughout the month of June and the result will be a dazzling bright spectacular on June 30th.

Sky & Telescope suggest that a similar rare conjunction of Venus and Jupiter may have been what was known as the “Star of Bethlehem” in 3-2 BC and since then there has not been a brighter, closer planetary conjunction. That means that this is the first opportunity of seeing it so clear for 2,000 years!

Jupiter and Venus are the two brightest planets and are often visible from most large city centres.

Throughout June, in the West it has been fascinating to watch the distance between the planet Jupiter and Venus reducing. Yesterday Jupiter was approximately the width of the moon away from Venus and tonight (June 30) the distance will reduce by half when Jupiter passes directly above Venus.

Venus and Jupiter will appear to be approximately one-third of a degree apart from one another. If we put our little finger up to the sky both planets would disappear behind it.

GRAND FIRE TRINE: OF LOVE AND FREEDOM

By Henry Seltzer for Astrograph Astrology

Today, Venus and Jupiter near their exact conjunction in Leo, an astrological and astronomical phenomenon that has been making quite the display these last few days in our evening skies. This lovely and congenial pairing is forming a grand trine with Uranus in Aries and the Moon passing through Sagittarius, all taking their places at 20-21 degrees of Fire signs. It is important, also, to mention that Chiron, the Wounded Healer, at 21 degrees of Pisces, is therefore in square to the Moon, and in inconjunct to Venus and Jupiter.

This is a true celebration of relationship, healing and human-ness. With Chiron thus invoked, this configuration can be viewed as a kind of portal, offering a heightened opportunity to have a glimpse into expanded heart space, and to connect with one another in a way that brings us closer to our higher selves. As the fantastic musicians and songwriters of these intense and interesting times constantly remind us, love is the glue and the salve that holds everything together; so that greater acceptance of ourselves and others is only a gesture away. NEW SCENE FROM EPISODE 3 OF POLDARK!

Almost 40 years ago Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions
of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series, Poldark. Now the gallant captain rides again, allowing a new generation to delight in the exploits of an unconventional romantic hero.

Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover that his father is dead, his lands are ruined, and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Also starring is Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery servant Demelza, a strong-willed miner’s daughter who runs away from home and finds refuge in Poldark’s enlightened household.

In a special appearance, Robin Ellis, who starred as Ross Poldark in MASTERPIECE’s original adaptation, plays Reverend Halse, the village’s sin-obsessed parson.

Poldark is based on a beloved series of novels by Winston Graham. The first, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945; the last, Bella Poldark, appeared in 2002, the year before Graham’s death. All twelve are subtitled A Novel of Cornwall and trace the fortunes of a landed, mine-owning family in windswept Cornwall.

The new Poldark airs in eight exciting episodes starting in June 2015 on MASTERPIECE on PBS.

AMY WINEHOUSE 2015 DOCUMENTARY RELEASE JULY 3

Because keeping the media's version of Amy Winehouse as your own would be tragic….
Amy (2015) Director: Asif Kapadia

A burnout. A drug addict who wasted her talent. A freakishly great singer who sported a beehive hairdo and gave awkward, often uncomfortable interviews in which she was clearly high and/or drunk.

Those are the ways in which most people saw, and still see, Amy Winehouse, the critically beloved jazz/soul singer who died from alcohol intoxication in 2011, at the age of 27.
Those perceptions are all wrong.

In his heartbreaking and exceptional documentary Amy, filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Senna) does right by Winehouse, dispelling the English crooner's posthumous reputation by capturing the real woman behind the media’s skewed perspectives.

With the help of Winehouse’s family members and closest friends, Kapadia wrangled together a surplus of never-before-seen footage, mostly shot on phones and camcorders, of the singer's life starting when she was 18 and following her all the way through her tumultuous career, including the recording sessions behind her U.K. breakthrough album Frank (2003) and the star-making worldwide chart-topper Back To Black (2006).

Winehouse’s parents, best friends, former managers and bodyguards, not to mention collaborator/admirer Tony Bennett, recount their experiences with her through voiceover, but they’re never seen outside of the home video footage and personal photographs. Amy steadfastly remains all about Winehouse.

US 50: THE LONELIEST US HIGHWAY

U.S. Route 50 (US 50) is a transcontinental highway in the United States, stretching from Sacramento, California, in the west to Ocean City, Maryland, on the east coast. The Nevada portion crosses the center of state and was named The Loneliest Road in America by Life magazine in July 1986.

The name was intended as a pejorative, but Nevada officials seized on it as a marketing slogan. The name originates from large desolate areas traversed by the route, with few or no signs of civilization. The highway crosses several large desert valleys separated by numerous mountain ranges towering over the valley floors, in what is known as the Basin and Range province of the Great Basin.

US 50 has a diverse route through the state, traversing the resort communities of Lake Tahoe, the state capital in Carson City, historical sites such as Fort Churchill State Historic Park, petroglyphs, alpine forests, desert valleys, ghost towns and Great Basin National Park.

The route was constructed over a historic corridor, first used for the Pony Express and Central Overland Route and later for the Lincoln Highway. Before the formation of the U.S. Highway System, most of US 50 in Nevada was designated State Route 2. The routing east of Ely has changed significantly from the original plans. The route change resulted from a rivalry between Nevada and Utah over which transcontinental route was better to serve California bound traffic, the Lincoln Highway or the Victory Highway.

I AM CHRIS FARLEY 2015 DOCUMENTARY HAS A NEW TRAILER

"I Am Chris Farley," a documentary about the late comedian who broke through with his roles on "Saturday Night Live," has a new trailer.

Chris Farley lived his life full speed and committed to make everyone around him laugh out loud, and I Am Chris Farley will tell his hilarious, touching and wildly entertaining story for the first time ever - from his early days in Madison, Wisconsin, and at Marquette University, through his work at the legendary Second City to his rapid rise to the top of the comedy world on “Saturday Night Live” and in hit films like Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.

The film showcases the performer’s most memorable characters and skits from television and film, paired with iconic photographs, home movies and family snapshots, to fully round out the story of this comedy legend – a bear of a man who nevertheless had remarkable grace and physicality.

Clips from Farley’s most memorable performances fill the documentary, from his breathtaking Chippendales audition alongside Patrick Swayze, to his comically ill-fated salesman in Tommy Boy, to his diatribes as Matt Foley, the motivational speaker who “lives in a van down by the river!”

I Am Chris Farley opens in theaters on July 31.

David Spade, Christina Applegate, Dan Aykroyd, Lorne Michaels, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Molly Shannon, and more reflect on the comedian’s life and legacy in the film.

The film will also be available on VOD, digital download, and DVD on August 11.

JUNE 28 1953 CORVETTE FIRST ASSEMBLED IN FLINT

On this day in 1953, workers at a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan, assemble the first Corvette, a two-seater sports car that would become an American icon. The first completed production car rolled off the assembly line two days later, one of just 300 Corvettes made that year.

The idea for the Corvette originated with General Motors’ pioneering designer Harley J. Earl, who in 1951 began developing plans for a low-cost American sports car that could compete with Europe’s MGs, Jaguars and Ferraris. The project was eventually code-named “Opel.” In January 1953, GM debuted the Corvette concept car at its Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. It featured a fiberglass body and a six-cylinder engine and according to GM, was named for the “trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II.” The Corvette was a big hit with the public at Motorama and GM soon put the roadster into production. From Autoworld

- Corvette made its debut as a concept vehicle at the General Motors Autorama in New York City on Jan. 17, 1953. It was such a success that a limited run of 300 production Corvettes began on June 30 of that year.

- All 1953 models were Polo white with a red interior and they were priced at $3,498. In 2006, the third 1953 Corvette produced sold for a record $1.06 million at auction.

- Corvette was exclusively available with an inline six-cylinder engine until 1955. That year, the optional V-8 engine was ordered by 90 percent of buyers. The six-cylinder was dropped in 1956. Corvette has been available exclusively with V-8 power since.

- Corvette was produced only as a convertible for its first 10 years. The fixed-roof 1963 “split-window” Corvette Sting Ray coupe launched the second-generation Corvette. Sales doubled and it became a year-round car for drivers in colder climates.

- Corvettes have been produced at three facilities: Flint, Mich. (1953); St. Louis, Mo., (1954-1981); and Bowling Green, Ky. (1981-2014). The change from St. Louis to Bowling Green happened during the production year.

From Jeffrey Downs: A close friend has the 57th ever 53 1/2 corvette ever made sitting Ina garage in Tennessee. Completely all original but needs restoration..

The tires are dry rotted but I'm not sure if they were the original ones or not. Only has like 23k miles on it or less. It's also for sale too..

WHAT WAS PATSY CLINE LIKE ON STAGE

Patsy Cline’s career was cruelly cut so short by her death in 1963, at just 30 years old, that most of us can only fantasise about what it would have been like to see her perform live. INVENTOR OF THE PLASTIC PINK FLAMINGO HAS DIED

As most of my friends know, I have always been a huge fan of the pink flamingos..Had them in many of my yards and collected all sorts of flamingo items that I still have today...So I want to share the story of their inventor Don Featherstone who passed away yesterday...

Mr. Featherstone created the pink flamingo in 1957 after graduating from art school at the Worcester Art Museum. He worked at Union Products in Leominster, and the pink flamingo was one of 750 items he created for the company.

In 1996 Mr. Featherstone was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in art. The prize is a parody of the Nobel Prizes and given to honor unusual or trivial achievements in scientific research. That year he also was appointed president of Union Products, a post he held until 2000.

Perhaps not shockingly, the pink flamingo lawn ornament was invented in the same decade that polyester pants, pink washing machines, vinyl wallpaper and Naugahyde lounge chairs were cool.

Flamingo fans worldwide owe their thanks to Don Featherstone a one-time employee of a plastics company called Union Products, who designed the first pink flamingo lawn ornament in 1957.

When they first hit stores, the blushing birds cost $2.76 a pair and were an immediate hit in working-class subdivisions from the Redwood Forest to the Gulfstream waters. This bird was made for you and me.

The 1960s were a decade of backlash against conformity, false experience, and all things Parental -- including, evidently, Mom and Dad's lawn décor. Hippies rallied against the plastics industry, cultural critics chastised all things "un-natural," and home and garden magazines pleaded with people to abandon the gnomes, lawn jockeys and flamingos of yesteryear in favor of classier, more natural yard décor.

By 1970, even Sears had stopped selling the pink flamingo, replacing the gaping hole in their garden department with natural-looking fountains and rocks, according to the historian Jennifer Price. Her book, "Flight Maps" (Basic Books, 1999), has a chapter on the plastic flamingo. It's a must-read for flamingo aficionados. READ MORE HERE

DETROIT MAFIA HOME FOR SALE WITH INSIDE PHOTO TOUR

http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2015/06/see_inside_grosse_pointe_park.html
CLICK PHOTO TO START SLIDE SHOW

701 Middlesex Rd. in Grosse Pointe Park is a 7,481 sq. foot Georgian colonial that will be sold in an auction on Saturday, June 20. Built in 1951, it was the home of a man thought to be the Italian mafia's enforcer. It is believed that tunnels run from underneath the house to the home across the street, that of former Detroit mafia boss Anthony Joseph Zerilli.

The five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom house hits the auction block at noon June 20 through Beth Rose Real Estate and Auctions.

Middlesex Road, setting of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel Middlesex, had plenty of Mafia ties once upon a time, and the two-story mansion sitting on a double lot in Grosse Pointe Park is no exception.

The house allegedly belonged to a Mafia enforcer at one time, and was situated across the boulevard from a mob boss.Read Full Story Here

RIVER'S EDGE GALLERY: LETS PRETEND

"Bonnard Meets Klimt" by Birgit Huttemann-Holz.

Let's Pretend
Presented by River's Edge Gallery

River's Edge Gallery would like to invite you to join us for one of this year's largest group shows featuring over 30 metro Detroit artists. On Friday, June 19th, River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte will unveil their latest exhibition “Let’s Pretend”.

This show focuses on landscapes and still lifes featuring various artists from Metro Detroit. “Let’s Pretend” is the second part of a series that focuses on traditional art genres with a contemporary twist. Last month’s, “Dream(Face)Land”, dealt with portraiture and figurative art.

Urban Landscape series by Anita Bates

The inspiration for this exhibition came from a poem written by Jim Slack, the late husband of gallery owner, Patt Slack. Jim co-founded the gallery with Ms. Slack in 1980 and operated it with her until his passing in 2001. Jim was well known in the Detroit and Downriver art scene. Previous to that he had an active art career on the East & West Coasts.

The poem asks the viewer to pretend that a painting’s smudges, markings and squiggles are objects in a landscape. The poem goes on to ask if the viewer would pretend that they are an audience and the poet is the artist.

For “Let’s Pretend” dozens of artists were asked to create their idea of a still life and/or landscape in various forms including ceramics, photography, conceptual, textile and painting. “Let’s Pretend” will remain on display for the annual Wyandotte Art Fair in July of 2015.

Opening reception will be held on Friday June 19th 6-10pm. For more information, call (734) 246-9880 or email info@artattheedge.com

“Narrating ‘The Making of The Mob: New York’ is a thrill for me because I’m fascinated, like many, by the rich, untold history of these men and their strong ties to each other,” said Liotta. “Stephen David is a skilled storyteller and I’m happy to lend my voice to this series.”

Utilizing an immersive blend of dramatic scenes, archival footage and groundbreaking VFX, “The Making of The Mob: New York” is AMC’s first ever docu-drama featuring exclusive interviews with notable names including former NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Meyer Lansky II, Chazz Palminteri, Drea de Matteo, Joe Mantegna, Frankie Valli, Mob attorney and former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman and noted author and historian David Pietrusza, among many others.

As part of AMC’s “Mob Mondays,” AMC will extend the Mafia theme by partnering each episode of “The Making of The Mob: New York” with a lead-in from their extensive library of iconic mobster films. Long the cornerstones of the popular annual “Mob Week” programming event on AMC, lead-in titles will include The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Goodfellas, American Gangster, Donnie Brasco, Scarface, Casino and Carlito’s Way.

SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA LEGENDS FAMILY REUNION’ AT THE OL’ BALL GAME

PHILADELPHIA – Forty years after releasing the Family Reunion album on the iconic Philadelphia International Records, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees The O’Jays were a primary catalyst behind a family reunion of their former label mates June 5 at the 12th Annual Phillies African-American Heritage Celebration, hosted by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers and “Sound of Philadelphia” architects Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff at Citizens Bank Park in honor of Black Music Month.

Gamble & Huff presented The O’Jays and R&B and jazz legend Jean Carne with the Phillies Gamble & Huff Community Partnership Award and were joined in the celebration by fellow PIR greats Billy Paul (“Me & Mrs. Jones”), producer Dexter Wansel, and pop-R&B songwriter Bunny Sigler, who sang the National Anthem. Ms. Carne performed her PIR hit single, “Don’t Let It Go to Your Head.”

With Gamble & Huff, The O'Jays emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with "Back Stabbers" (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with "Love Train". Numerous other hits followed for PIR, topped by “For the Love of Money,” “I Love Music,” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.” The O'Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records became the birthplace, incubator and launching pad for the Philly Soul sound aka “The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP),” a unique blend of R&B rhythms, sweet soul vocals, deep funk grooves, pulsing horn charts and lush string arrangements with melodic structures combining elements of pop, jazz and world music.

With a stable core of artists led by The O'Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, MFSB and the Three Degrees, Gamble & Huff co-founded Philadelphia International Records and began creating monster hits from nearly the first day of its inception in 1971.

They continued to record, collaborate and produce major hits with a galaxy of stars from the pop, rock, soul and jazz universes, including Michael Jackson and the Jacksons, Elton John, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle, the Spinners, the Stylistics, the Delfonics, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Butler, Wilson Pickett, LaBelle, Archie Bell & the Drells, the Soul Survivors, Laura Nyro, the Trammps, McFadden & Whitehead, Phyllis Hyman, the Dells and many more.

Gamble & Huff created and are credited for launching one of the most celebrated and historic songwriting partnerships that spawned into a sophisticated sound lovingly crafted in the studio by some of the 20th century's most influential producers and studio teams -- including Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Thom Bell, Linda Creed, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead, Bunny Sigler, Dexter Wansel, Bobby Martin, MFSB Orchestra, Baker, Harris and Young, Joe Tarsia (Sigma Sound) and others – Philly Soul set the stage for disco, smooth jazz, adult contemporary music and more.

Gamble & Huff began celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year. The celebration will continue in 2016 with the projected release of their Autobiographical Book and the launch of their Theatrical Play on their historic Life Story and creation of one of America’s great music catalogues, known as “The Sound of Philadelphia.”
