Beverly Ford, co-author with Stephanie Schorow of The Boston Mob Guide: Hitmen, Hoodlums & Hideouts, has been covering the trial of Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger, now in its fifth week. The 83-year-old Bulger, captured in 2011 after 16 years on the lam, faces charges of racketeering, including 19 murders. At U.S. District Court, Ford has witnessed a parade of witnesses – police, victims and hitmen – who have testified about the far-reaching crime syndicate that Bulger once ran.
Like many, she was anticipating the testimony of Kevin Weeks, a friend to Whitey who later gave crucial information about his buddy, including the location of long-buried victims. Much of Bulger’s dark history, highlighted in The Boston Mob Guide, came from published accounts by Weeks. But now the man himself would speak under oath about what he saw. Here’s what Ford witnessed in court, the first of several exclusive posts for The Mob Museum blog:
I thought Kevin Weeks, confidante, protégé and leg breaker for Mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, looked a bit uncomfortable Monday, July 8, when he stepped up to the stand to testify against his former boss. Wearing a dark jacket and grey, collarless shirt similar to one worn by the defendant, Weeks had good reason to feel uncomfortable. But it wasn’t because his mentor was sitting just a few feet away.
