GOODBYE LEVI STUBBS LEGENDARY VOICE OF THE FOUR TOPS

Sadly we lost one of the most unique voices of our time. Levi Stubbs lead singer of the fabulous Motown Group THE FOUR TOPS The one group at Motown that never played musical chairs with it's members. They were consistant hit makers and Levi's voice led them with his rough and yet soulful vocals.

The Tops are among my top 5 favorite music groups of all time and I was sad to hear a few years ago that Levi had a stroke that disabled him from performing. He was living in the Detroit area and still vivacious although wheelchair bound.

We will miss him dearly, he was a really nice man and a fabulous singer. Motown Legends Gather To Mourn Stubbs The Tops were inducted by Stevie Wonder in the Rock Hall of Fame in 1990

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBIE!

It was 1960 and I was 4 years old when I received my first Barbie for Christmas. My first doll has been reproduced and I have her sitting beside me as I type this post! In my closet are over twenty unique Barbies I have collected over the years.

I have a few that are my favorites beginning with my original doll the brunette ponytail with the "Solo in the Spotlight" outfit.
I have the "Silken Flame" Barbie too. A bona fide member of the barbie collector club to this day.

Silken Flame

Back then Barbie came with just heels and a swim suit. The outfits were packaged in very cool pink and white striped packages that hung on racks.

They sold for about 1.00. Fancier outfits were more. I remember the Bridal Outfit was 4.99. My sisters and I had rousing fun role playing with these dolls. We won't go into that... Ken was boring...

Skipper had cool hair but she was just cute. My cousin had the ultimate Barbie Dream House!! I wanted that soooo bad. Here is the best picture I could find of it.

Fabulous and forever stylishly fierce, I have never lost my fascination with the incredible one and only fashion doll Barbie!

1960's POP ART

Pop Art came about in the mid 50's in England but reached it's full potential in New York in the 60's. Pop artists focused on familiar images of popular culture such as comic strips, supermarket products, magazine advertisements, and billboards. View more here

The most famous of the Pop artists was the cult figure Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol was on Nixon's enemies list; his favorite soup was tomato; he was a fashion model; he painted Queen Elisabeth; he made over 50 movies; he was shot in 1968 and almost died; he was blessed by the Pope; and he guest starred on The Love Boat.

Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Fox Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was a prominent American pop artist, his work heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. He himself described Pop art as, "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting".

SOCK IT TO ME BABY: MITCH RYDER AND THE DETROIT WHEELS

It was about 1966 and I was 10 years old that birthday. My mom took me to buy my present and all I wanted in the world was "Sock it to me Baby" by Mitch Ryder. My mom thought I might rather have the Beach Boys or Herman's Hermits. NO WAY I wanted "Devil with a Blue Dress" and "Shake a Tail Feather" and "Little Latin Lupe Lu". I got it and she bought me the other records too! Mitch Ryder is the soundtrack of my life!

Born just outside of Detroit, Michigan in the late 50's I grew up listening to CKLW am from Canada. My first record I ever heard that made me jump to me feet and shake it was MITCH! You better sock it ...to me baby sock it! Here thanks to YOU TUBE is the man in action.

POP ART LEGEND PETER MAX!

Peter Max is a multi-dimensional creative artist. He has worked with oils, acrylics, water colors, finger paints, dyes, pastels, charcoal, pen, multi-colored pencils, etchings, engravings, animation cells, lithographs, serigraphs, silk screens, ceramics, sculpture, collage, video and computer graphics.

He loves all media, including mass media as a "canvas" for his creative expression.
As in his prolific creative output, Max is as passionate in his creative input. He loves to hear amazing facts about the universe and is as fascinated with numbers and mathematics as he is with visual phenomena.

"If I didn't choose art, I would have become an astronomer," states Max, who became fascinated with astronomy while living in Israel, following a ten-year upbringing in Shanghai, China.
"I became fascinated with the vast distances in space as well as the vast world within the atom," says Max. Peter's early childhood impressions had a profound influence on his psyche, weaving the fabric that was to become the tapestry of his full creative expression.

The very first art work poster I bought with my babysitting money were of Peter Max's totally psychedelic images. Teh gorgeous colors and imaginative juxtapositioning of images blew everyone's minds. Us teenagers loved him right from the beginning. I wish I could afford an original....

Here is a very fun video with the charming Randy Newman sings the background theme.

MOTOWN: THE HISTORY OF THE SUPREMES

The Supremes, an American female singing group, were one of the signature acts on Motown Records during the 1960s. Originally founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes' repertoire included doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway show tunes and discoThey were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts, with twelve of the group's singles peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, The Supremes rivaled The Beatles in worldwide popularity,  and their success made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.

Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit, formed The Primettes as the sister act to The Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who would go on to form The Temptations).

Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard and Wilson carried on as a trio.

During the mid-1960s, The Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president
Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & The Supremes and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name returned to The Supremes.

After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed more frequently; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene all became members of the group during the mid-1970s.
The Supremes disbanded in 1977 after an eighteen-year run.

Keep Me Hangin On

We grew up loving the Supremes for their gorgeous clothes and fun choreography. They were from Detroit and nearby where I lived. The drama of Diana fighting with the other girls made watching them more interesting. Poor FLO.....
