ANN RULE, TED BUNDY, AND THE CAPTURE OF THE GREEN RIVER KILLER

Ted Bundy was not looking forward to sitting in the Florida electric chair. As the execution time grew near, Ted tried confessing to his murders and dangling burial information to his jailers in exchange for extending his life on Death Row. The Florida Governor denied his offer to "confess" and the execution date remained unchanged.

However, fans of the Netflix show Mindhunter (great show!) know the story of the invention of the FBI Profiling Unit. FBI agents traveled to various prisons to interview various serial killers to learn about serial killers and their motives and characteristics. 

When authorities in Washington State were at a loss trying to find the "The Green River Killer" they approached Bundy for his take on what this killer might be like. Ted called him "The River Man". Read more about the story here.

How Ted Bundy Helped Catch the Green River Killer After being given death sentences in 1979 and 1980, Ted Bundy was on death row when murders started happening in Washington state in 1982. Investigators were stumped by the slayings around south King County, as young women kept disappearing and with their bodies turning up along the Green River. Ted Bundy is known as one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, 

having admitted to killing 36 women, but possibly having as many as 100 victims during his murdering spree in the 1970s. After being given death sentences in 1979 and 1980, Bundy was on death row when murders started happening in Washington state in 1982. 

 Investigators were stumped by the slayings around south King County, as young women kept disappearing and with their bodies turning up along the Green River. The murderer on the loose became known as the Green River Killer, but officials couldn’t track down his whereabouts — until they were offered assistance from none other than Bundy, who gave them insight into the mentality of a serial killer. Eventually, with Bundy's help, Gary Ridgway was caught and admitted to his 49th murder on February 18, 2011, with actual estimates being closer to 80 victims.

In the late 1980s, my assistant Marjie, /told me about her cousin True Crime author Ann Rule. I became addicted to reading Ann's many books. 

Then, when email became the big thing in the late 1990s I struck up an email friendship with Ms. Rule. She had worked with Ted Bundy at the Suicide Hotline then helped get him arrested and spoke with him when he was in prison. Ann wrote the first book on Ted Bundy, "The Stranger Beside Me". Great book! Then she spent 20 years patiently waiting for the Green River Killer to captured. Those two cases we chatted online about for years.  Ann Rule was instrumental in both of these cases and someone needs to make a film about her life! Heads up ID Network and Netflix!

 

THE FBI TEN MOST WANTED LIST TURNS 70!

The FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives is a most wanted list maintained by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The list arose from a conversation held in late 1949 between J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI, and William Kinsey Hutchinson, International News Service (the predecessor of the United Press International) editor-in-chief, who were discussing ways to promote capture of the FBI's "toughest guys".

This discussion turned into a published article, which received so much positive publicity that on March 14, 1950, the FBI officially announced the list to increase law enforcement's ability to capture dangerous fugitives.

Individuals are generally only removed from the list if the fugitive is captured, dies, or if the charges against them are dropped; they are then replaced by a new entry selected by the FBI. In ten cases, the FBI removed individuals from the list after deciding that they were no longer a "particularly dangerous menace to society". I just finished watching this very compelling series Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer about Elizabeth Kendall and her daughter's years-long struggle to understand her relationship with malignant/psychopathic/covert narcissist and murderer Ted Bundy when she was a young single mom with a child.

CAROL DARONCH ESCAPES TED BUNDY 11-8-1974

November 8, 1974, Salt Lake City, Utah, resident Carol DaRonch narrowly escapes being abducted by serial killer Ted Bundy. DaRonch had been shopping at a mall when a man claiming to be a police detective told her that there was an attempted theft of her car and she needed to file a police report.

Despite her misgivings, DaRonch accompanied the man to his Volkswagen and got into the car. Once inside, he placed a handcuff on her and attempted to hit her with a crowbar, but DaRonch fought back and jumped out of the car to safety.

DaRonch’s attempted abduction was of special interest to the Utah authorities at the time, who were trying to figure out what had happened to several young women who disappeared earlier in the fall of 1974.

After DaRonch escaped, Bundy quickly found another victim and continued his Utah killing spree until his arrest (in his VW, with handcuffs at the ready) in August 1975.

DaRonch picked him out of a lineup, and her testimony helped convict him for aggravated kidnapping, which kept Bundy in jail while police in multiple states worked on building murder cases against him.

On December 30, 1977, Bundy lost a lot of weight and shimmed through a ceiling vent to escape from jail. A few months later, he was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List, and on February 15, 1978, he was finally captured. He eventually confessed to the murders of 28 women and was executed by electric chair in Florida on January 24, 1989.

FBI TEN MOST WANTED LIST: LAUNCHED MAR 14 1950

On this day in 1950, the Federal Bureau of Investigation institutes the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives.

The creation of the program arose out of a wire service news story in 1949 about the “toughest guys” the FBI wanted to capture. The story drew so much public attention that the “Ten Most Wanted” list was given the okay by J. Edgar Hoover the following year.

As of 2011, 465 of the criminals included on the list have been apprehended or located, 153 as a result of tips from the public. The Criminal Investigative Division (CID) of the FBI asks all fifty-six field offices to submit candidates for inclusion on the list.

The CID in association with the Office of Public and Congressional Affairs then proposes finalists for approval of by the FBI’s Deputy Director. The criteria for selection is simple, the criminal must have a lengthy record and current pending charges that make him or her particularly dangerous.

And the the FBI must believe that the publicity attendant to placement on the list will assist in the apprehension of the fugitive.

EXCITING NEW BOOK TRILOGY ABOUT TED BUNDY BY KEVIN M SULLIVAN

True Crime fans everywhere are in for some serious reading!  I was scrolling through Facebook the other night and saw an ad for THE BUNDY SECRETS by Kevin M.Sullivan. Haven't read anything new about Ted in a very long time. Found the publisher online and emailed them that I wanted to review TBS. Then I found out that Kevin had 2 previous books about Ted as well!

Kevin was seriously into researching Ted's life and crimes.  I wanted to interview him to learn more about what motivates this author.  I get "into" topics and ideas and can become somewhat obsessive. Ask my friends and readers!

Kevin called me and we talked for hours! We have so much in common. He is from the South, I spent a lot of time working down there. He is well versed in the Vietnam War and my Dad was killed in action over there in 1971. And of course we talked about Ted and Michigan Coed Killer John Norman Collins. Fascinating phone call. My friend said Kevin and I each had pieces of the other one's puzzle! How true! Kevin is brilliant and very dedicated to his art.. By all means True Crime fans buy these books!
