THE RACE CAR DRIVER THAT WENT DOWN WITH THE TITANIC

1912, Washington Augustus Roebling II, a 31-year-old race car engineer and driver, dies in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Roebling was named for his uncle, a civil engineer who helped build the Brooklyn Bridge.

Roebling was born March 25, 1881, in Trenton, New Jersey. After studying engineering in school, he went to work in the burgeoning American auto industry. He eventually developed a race car, known as the Roebling-Planche, which took second place in the Vanderbilt Cup Race in 1910 in Savannah, Georgia.

In 1912, Roebling, along with his chauffeur, his Fiat car and a friend, sailed to Europe, where they traveled to several countries. For the return trip home to America, Roebling booked a first-class cabin on the Titanic, then the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner, measuring 882 feet in length and tipping the scales at over 46,000 tons.

Roebling boarded the ship at Southampton, England, on April 12, 1912, for its maiden voyage. Two days later, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the Titanic struck an iceberg in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic, about 400 miles from Newfoundland. Two hours and 40 minutes after hitting the iceberg, the mangled luxury liner, which had been dubbed “unsinkable” by the press, lay broken in pieces at the bottom of the sea, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew members. (The Titanic carried 20 boats capable of holding 1,178 people, which exceeded regulations at the time but was hardly sufficient for the 2,228 individuals onboard.)

Washington Roebling II was survived by his uncle and namesake, an engineer and a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War who in the late 1860s had become an assistant engineer on the Brooklyn Bridge project. In 1869, he replaced his father John Roebling, who designed the bridge, as head engineer following the older man’s death. READ MORE

KRONWALL HOPES STRONG FINISH CARRIES OVER TO NEXT SEASON

DETROIT -- The word that his Red Wings teammates use the most when talking about him is warrior.

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall has fought through his chronic knee problems to remain an effective player.

In the previous two seasons, Kronwall missed a combined 42 games.

This past season he missed only the first three games before returning to play the final 79 games, averaging 18:31 per game.

"I guess in a nutshell, just less load," Kronwall said the day the Wings cleaned out their lockers. "Didn't lift as much every week. Had one lift day a week instead of several, as I'd done in the past. Just less pounding on the joints on a weekly basis. Just doing alternative stuff. More stuff in the pool and things like that. That's what gave me the opportunity to play this year and I'm hoping it's gonna do the same thing for next year."

Kronwall, 37, ended the season with a six-game point streak, the longest by any Red Wing this season. It tied for Kronwall's best in five years.

"Last year it was a struggle to even watch him go through what he did, but that shows if you do the right things and you meet the right people during the summer and you work hard, you can come back stronger and healthier, and he did," captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "You saw it this year, not just the way he played the games he did, but how he was able to push himself, too and become stronger. I'm really happy to see it. Hopefully he'll have another good summer."

On March 27 against Pittsburgh, Kronwall scored a goal for his 400th career point, the 104th defenseman in league history to reach that milestone.

That goal was also the 80th of Kronwall's career, tying him for fourth place in franchise history in goals by a defenseman with Marcel Pronovost. READ MORE

A HOPEFUL VISION FOR THE EDUCATION IN DETROIT

During many years, the state of education in Detroit has remained quite complicated and full of challenges of different types, which seem to get more and more complicated with time. The problem is that many students of Detroit schools are not receiving decent knowledge that would allow them to build a successful career in future. However, many students are still hoping to see new perspectives. Many still believe that there is space for change. Although the majority of educational institutions in Detroit have been in trouble for quite a long time, there is still a hopeful vision on this issue that gives a hope that everything can change.

What Are The Main Problems Of Education In Detroit?

The first and main issue is bankruptcy. The problem is that being autonomous units of government, Detroit schools were not subject to the overall city’s reorganization, and thus, they did not gain decent funding. This leads to a terrible physical state of buildings, which gets worse with time until it becomes barely possible to accept a big number of students and provide them with a quality education because the buildings are simply collapsing.

Another big issue is overcrowding of classrooms. A standard middle or high school classroom in Detroit contains minimum 40 students, which creates conditions that are not contributing to increasing the quality of gained knowledge and are not even safe.

Due to both of these issues, many schools were closed. There also were some general indignation and massive strikes, during which teachers demanded the increase of education conditions for students and teachers. A similar situation can be observed in different universities in Detroit. However, there is still some hope.

A Hopeful Vision For The Education In Detroit

Many obstacles prevent educational reforms that are so needed in Detroit today and political or political issues are only a few of them. There are also such problems like lack of accessible transportation, lack of support from the government, and other related issues. The previous attempts to make a change were not too successful.

However, the only way to save the situation is to make radical changes in education. It is the right time to take dramatically different steps – an alternative, hopeful vision assumes putting a greater responsibility on community leaders, school principals, teachers, and students’ parents. Currently, it looks like the most effective way to recover the urban education.

Also, it is important for the state to give the students and their parents more quality educational choices, to give them an opportunity to decide, which school fits their needs the most, instead of following an inefficient address-based school assignment model. Thus, it is important to give parents the right to choose a better educational option for their children instead of just agreeing to stay in the school that was assigned to their child based on their address.

They can instead attend charter schools. Although not all of them are better than public ones, the CREDO research has shown that students tend to receive at minimum several extra months of learning (compared to public schools) during every academic year.

What other methods may help? Among many other strategies, there is one more that can help improve the educational situation in Detroit – the idea is to evenly distribute the funds received from taxes, which currently go to MPSERS pension contributions, among different public schools based on the number of students that study in each. How can it help? Such increase in funding based on a number of students will not only support schools but also expand the opportunities for attracting more good school leaders to the state. What would this mean? Great leaders, in their turn, can make it possible to make a significant positive change in the educational process and students’ performances.

Not less important is to ensure that both parents and students would take a bigger responsibility for students’ academic achievements – it is important to stimulate students’ desire to learn and obtain a high-quality education.

Of course, it is important to improve the overall educational conditions for everyone. But it is also important that students take the responsibility for their self-education and their performance – so, students are so purposeful that if they say to themselves: "I must write my essay now.", then with no doubts, they will do it. "

Some other changes should affect the teachers. For example, adopting a new, innovative form of teachers’ certification, as well as providing teachers with more educational resources, could bring some positive effect to the overall situation.

Final Words

Without a doubt, the situation in Detroit requires some fast and effective actions but there is still a hope that everything can be changed with a right approach. There are many opportunities for improvement. Thus, with an effective collaboration of government, schools, teachers, and parents – it will be possible to find new ways of solving the current problems.

LEAH REMINI SIGNS DEVELOPMENT DEAL WITH A&E

A+E Networks has set a first-look development pact with Leah Remini and renewed her “Scientology and the Aftermath” docu-series for a third season.

The production deal comes on the heels of A+E’s launch of an unscripted production unit dubbed A+E Originals. The plan is for Remini to develop a range of documentary content, beyond the subject of Scientology, for A&E, Lifetime, History and other in-house A+E platforms.

“I am so incredibly proud of this show and the movement that has started around it which continues to grow each and every day,” said Remini. “I’m honored to have a home at A+E Networks and am grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to expand our relationship telling brave stories and bringing truth to light, no matter the obstacles.”

“Scientology and the Aftermath” won the Emmy for informational series last year. The veteran actress’ expose of the organization birthed by L. Ron Hubbard is one of a handful of docu-series successes (notably “60 Days In” and “Live P.D.”) that have generated renewed momentum for A&E, which had been struggling with double-digit viewership losses.

“Leah is an incredible talent and collaborator with a unique point of view and we are looking forward to developing her brand of brave storytelling to new topics,” said Buccieri. “The creation of A+E Originals provides the opportunity for us to partner directly with the industry’s best nonfiction storytellers like Leah, both in front of and behind the camera, to bring their ideas to audiences around the world.”

The unit expects to order at least 50 hours of programming this year. “Scientology” has been renewed for eight hourlong episodes, plus five specials. “Scientology and the Aftermath” is produced for A&E Network by the Intellectual Property Corporation. Remini, IPC’s Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman, and showrunner Myles Reiff. READ MORE
