THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL OF ALL: NEW SERIES ON THE ZODIAC

The case of the Zodiac still unsolved after 4 decades. Why? There are many people who think they know who the Zodiac was (is). Can't we use GEDMatch and backtrack the DNA like they did with the Golden State Killer?

This new series looks really interesting. Gary Stewart wrote a compelling book on the Zodiac and now a new mini-series begins next month. Hopefully, this may lead to the final answer to who was the Zodiac.

“The Most Dangerous Animal of All” is a four-part series based on the 2014 book by Gary Stewart. It explores Stewart's obsessive search for the biological parents who abandoned him as a child and how he came to believe that his father — Earl Van Best — was the Zodiac Killer.

This mini-series debuts March 6, 2020, on FX and the next day on HULU

The Most Dangerous Animal of All

Zodiac Killer is the pseudonym of an unidentified serial killer who operated in Northern California from at least the late 1960s to the early 1970s.

The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Napa County, and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. The killer targeted four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29, with two of the men surviving attempted murder.

The Zodiac himself claimed to have killed up to 37 victims. The killer originated the name "Zodiac" in a series of taunting letters and cards sent to the local Bay Area press. The letters included four cryptograms (or ciphers). Of the four cryptograms sent, only one has been definitively solved.

GENEALOGY CAUGHT THE GOLDEN STATE KILLER; WILL IT FINALLY CATCH THE ZODIAC?

The unusual way police caught the Golden State Killer suspect was through the use of ancestry websites.  GSK left no finger prints behind but he did leave his genetic code!

Police reportedly used data from GEDMatch, a genealogy research site where users upload genealogical and genetic information, to help identify the man suspected of being the notorious Golden State Killer.

That site, which provides tools for people to conduct their own searches against uploaded data, said in a statement that it wasn’t aware of the police investigation and told users they could email to ask that existing data be deleted if they were concerned about privacy. Read Full Article

A scant hope of catching the Zodiac Killer perhaps lies on the back of a postage stamp, licked by the murderer 50 years ago.

The arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo, the man law enforcement believes is the East Area Rapist, has sparked myriad questions about the use of genealogy websites to revive long-cold cases.

After DeAngelo’s capture, investigators revealed they submitted the East Area Rapist’s DNA to an open-source genealogy website called GEDmatch, where it found a match with a relative who also used the service. Detectives were then able to narrow their list of suspects, eventually arresting DeAngelo on suspicion of a string of rapes and murders across the state during the 1970s and 1980s.

There are tons of people over the years who think they know who the Zodiac might have been. A lot of those stories are compelling...but still not enough proof.

WHO WAS THE ZODIAC KILLER 1968-1969?

Forensic Psychology/Zodiac Killer

"Zodiac" murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. Numerous suspects were named by law enforcement and amateur investigators but no conclusive evidence surfaced during the killer's lifetime.

In April 2004, the San Francisco Police Department marked the case "inactive", yet re-opened the case at some point prior to March 2007. The case also remains open in the city of Vallejo as well as in Napa County and Solano County. The California Department of Justice has maintained an open case file on the Zodiac murders since 1969.

Zodiac Killer letters

On August 1, 1969, three letters prepared by the killer were received at the Vallejo Times-Herald, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Francisco Examiner. The nearly identical letters took credit for the shootings at Lake Herman Road and Blue Rock Springs. Each letter also included one-third of a 408-symbol cryptogram which the killer claimed contained his identity.

The Chronicle published its third of the cryptogram on page four of the next day's edition. An article printed alongside the code quoted Vallejo Police Chief Jack E. Stiltz as saying "We're not satisfied that the letter was written by the murderer" and requested the writer send a second letter with more facts to prove his identity. The threatened murders did not happen, and all three parts were eventually published.

On August 7, 1969, another letter was received at the San Francisco Examiner with the salutation "Dear Editor This is the Zodiac speaking". This was the first time the killer had used this name for himself. The letter was a response to Chief Stiltz's request for more details to prove he had killed Faraday, Jensen and Ferrin. In it, the Zodiac included details about the murders which had not been released to the public as well as a message to the police that when they cracked his code "they will have me".

Mystery Case Books

On August 8, 1969, Donald and Bettye Harden of Salinas, California, cracked the 408-symbol cryptogram. It contained a misspelled message in which the killer claimed to be collecting slaves for the afterlife. No name appears in the decoded text, and the killer said that he would not give away his identity because it would slow down or stop his slave collection...
