On this day in 2003, a major outage knocked out power across the eastern United States and parts of Canada. Beginning at 4:10 p.m. ET, 21 power plants shut down in just three minutes. Fifty million people were affected, including residents of New York, Cleveland and Detroit, as well as Toronto and Ottawa, Canada.
Although power companies were able to resume some service in as little as two hours, power remained off in other places for more than a day. The outage stopped trains and elevators, and disrupted everything from cellular telephone service to operations at hospitals to traffic at airports. In New York City, it took more than two hours for passengers to be evacuated from stalled subway trains.
Small business owners were affected when they lost expensive refrigerated stock. The loss of use of electric water pumps interrupted water service in many areas. There were even some reports of people being stranded mid-ride on amusement park roller coasters. At the New York Stock Exchange and bond market, though, trading was able to continue thanks to backup generators.
Authorities soon calmed the fears of jittery Americans that terrorists may have been responsible for the blackout, but they were initially unable to determine the cause of the massive outage. American and Canadian representatives pointed figures at each other, while politicians took the opportunity to point out major flaws in the region’s outdated power grid.
Finally, an investigation by a joint U.S.-Canada task force traced the problem back to an Ohio company, FirstEnergy Corporation. When the company’s EastLake plant shut down unexpectedly after overgrown trees came into contact with a power line, it triggered a series of problems that led to a chain reaction of outages. FirstEnergy was criticized for poor line maintenance, and more importantly, for failing to notice and address the problem in a timely manner–before it affected other areas. Read More Here
West Bloomfield, MI (April 10, 2018) – Canadian classical pianist Anastasia Rizikov will perform at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29. Rizikov made her orchestral debut at the tender age of seven and has since appeared as soloist with major orchestras in North America and Europe.
The launch of her career began when she placed first at the Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev, Ukraine, where she was invited to perform with the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine conducted by Mykola Diadiura. From there, Rizikov stepped on to the international competition circuit competing with musicians twice her age.
In 2011, she became the youngest person to compete and win in history at the Rotary International Piano Competition (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 2011). Rizikov won in other major competitions, including: Ettore Pozzoli International Piano Competition (Seregno, Italy, 2015); the Jaén International Piano Competition (Jaén, Spain, 2015); and the 13th Giuliano Pecar International Piano Competition (Gorizia, Italy, 2013), to name a few.
“Ms. Rizikov is an extraordinary virtuoso, with abundant technical prowess,” said Renée Silberman at The Beat Magazine. “But she is more than the sum of ten fingers – she is a consummate artist, born to play, to love the art and act of music-making...” he continued.
Now 19, Rizikov is being lauded as the “one to watch.” With more than 30 orchestral performances and 20 concerti in her repertoire, Rizikov has already played with such major orchestras as Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and City of Granada Orchestra. She has worked with conductors such as Peter Oundjian, Alain Trudel, Bernhard Gueller and more.
Adept in English, Russian, Ukrainian (and working towards mastering her French), Rizikov began studies at École Normale de Musique de Paris with Professor Rena Shereshevskaya. From 2003-2017 she studied with Professor Maia Spis at the Nadia Music Academy, Toronto. She has played in master classes for Sergei Babayan, Arie Vardi, and Robert Levin, and has worked with András Schiff, Emanuel Ax, Menahem Pressler, and Olga Kern.
Being a person who loves and understands her audience, she dreams of being able to share her unique musical voice with the entire world, including audiences in Detroit.

How to Choose the Best Country Band for Your Event
Are you planning an event this coming Saturday and one of the things on your list is finding a country band for performance? Different country band performers provide these services, and therefore, it is upon you as the customer to choose the right group to work with. You need a band that will deliver the best performance and wow your crowd too.
So, use the following tips to guide you in choosing the best country band for your event.
• Focus on the Event
What event are you planning for? Is it a wedding, a birthday party or even a funeral. Focusing on the event helps you make the right decision when choosing the band to perform at the event. Although some groups perform in all events, it is always good to work with a band that offers their services in specific events since it will be more comfortable coordinating with them regarding the songs to play.
• Know your Crowd
Another tip to guide you in choosing a performance band is by thoroughly understanding your crowd. If they are young, get a band that will provide energetic and vibey songs, but if they are elderly, slow performances will be the best choice since they can easily enjoy and dance to the music. Also, if the crowd is a mixture of the two, ensure the band that you chose will be able to entertain and engage all the invitees.
• The Budget
The amount of money that you have set aside to spend on hiring a band will profoundly determine the kind of group to get. This is because all bands have different charging rates depending on various factors with experience being the first one.
So, set aside enough money to find a competent and experienced group that will give a good performance, and also choose a band that will not lead you to overspend. Research on the internet since some country music bands have websites where their customers can contact them from. For example, visit greenlightbooking.com to see some of the leading country music bands that you can work with.
• The Type of Songs to Play
The kind of music that is played communicates the type of event that is going on. For example, a wedding performance is different from a funeral performance. Therefore before the due date, go through all the music that the band has set to perform in your event to see if it will blend well with the theme of the event or not.
• The Services
Choose a band that has an excellent communication and relation skills such that if you require asking them anything at any time, they will gladly assist you. They should also be flexible such that if you need them to change their songs or style of performance, they should be willing to compromise or even advice you where necessary.
Use the above great tips to help you choose the best country music band to work with. Working with a group that you can relate to makes your event run smoothly and be fun. So, to make your event stand out, choose a band that has a good experience, and that has an excellent selection of music as well. You can ask for help from a friend about the best band to hire to save time.

It was a great Record Store Day yesterday at Found Sound in Ferndale, Michigan. We called Richard at the store and asked him if he would like Miss Tosha Owens and her friend Photographer Jane Cassisi to come shoot some photos to celebrate Record Store Day.
Found Sound is Tosha's favorite Record Store and that is how we chose them to profile today.
Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday every April to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world. Click to Find out More
From Tosha:
We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day for Record Store Day this year. The weather was perfect, the fans were out and the vibe was just right so, of course, the Found Sound record store was the perfect place to be.
From the moment you walk in, that old familiar smell of vinyl and album jackets hits you and takes you back to an amazing time in music. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the experience, the music and the amazing staff.
It was really a heart warming moment to see parents educating their children on our ‘record store’ culture. I love Found Sound because you are not just a customer when you shop there. You’re part of the experience. And that’s special. -TO

Nothing keeps an event on track like employing a professional compere from a talent agency - whether it’s an annual awards evening, a charity auction or a personal development seminar. By taking on the presenting role, a compere will not only ensure that the job is done well, but they’ll also take a job off the plate of someone else.
If your CEO or head of HR usually acts as compere for your organisation’s awards evening, they will be freed up to mingle, potentially allowing them to make important connections and schmooze with all the right people.
Equally, if you’re running a seminar with talks by a variety of people, employing someone to fill the time between speakers will help to break up the day for your audience. It’s been proven that a change is as good as a rest when it comes to keeping concentration levels high, and some light-hearted entertainment will help keep your colleagues or employees engaged.
A talent agency will often recommend that you book someone with presenting experience on TV or radio to act as host for an event. As well as being comfortable in front of an audience, someone with broadcast experience will often have the kind of gift of the gab that means they’re good at improvising and filling time when they need to.
The Blofelds
Any celebrity with a background in broadcasting, from a sporting commentator like Henry Blofeld or Sir Trevor Brooking to a star of the airwaves such as Clara Amfo or Noreen Khan, will bring a bit of star quality to your event as well as their professional presenting skills.
Of course, there are some downsides to booking an outsider; you’ll need to give them a script and fill them in on the ins and outs of the event in a way that you wouldn’t need to familiarise someone chosen from inside your business. This small downside pales into insignificance, however, next to the benefits of booking a celebrity compere.
Not only will you have a professional on the job, but the celebrity appeal of your compere is sure to prove a draw for attendees and ensure your event is a hot topic long after it’s over.
If you’re interested in booking a celebrity to compere the next event that you are hosting, get in touch with MN2S talent agents to find out more.
The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will honor the best films of 2014 and will take place on February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles beginning at 5:30 p.m. PST.

13. Well, for starters, information written in listicle form. Admit it. We’ve either hit rock bottom or are grabbing internet culture right by its horns. Say what you will, but chances are… you were not expecting this.
12. But let’s talk talent. And when we say talent, there are only three words that come to mind: Mary, J. and Blige. Which is why we’re thrilled to announce that the one and only Mary J. Blige will be performing live at the American Music Awards. Ms. Blige is on the verge of releasing her 13th studio album “The London Sessions,” this December, and will bring her one of a kind vocals to our stage to remind the world that she’s considered the most successful woman in R&B for the last 25 years. (No word yet on whether or not Lebron James will arrive unannounced to duet with her, but we can only hope.)
11. Now seems like a good time to remind you that the AMAs are completely voted on by the fans. Yes, you. The fans. Quite literally “rocking the vote” via our Coca-Cola AMA voting site, AMAvote.com, as well as on Twitter by including the nominee’s name, category name and #AMAs within a tweet. And remember what your mother used to say: You’re never too old to publicly vote for 5 Seconds Of Summer. (No? Just our moms? #coolmom)
10. And speaking of 5SOS, you’ll be quietly whispering 5SO-YES when you find out that the band is now officially part of the AMAs performance roster. *we’ll wait while you quietly shriek into your office cardigan* 5 Seconds of Summer is responsible for this year’s hit “She Looks So Perfect” (whose music video has raked in a mere 88 million views…) and are currently on tour with that other young group of misfits One Direction. (Just imagine all the backstage hijinx those boys are getting into.) And the best news? It’s totally OK to have weird feelings for them since as they are all 18. Bet you weren’t expecting that.
9. But don’t feel too left out, fellas. Iggy Azalea is up for six awards—more than any other nominee. She’s so fancy, but you already know. So why are we still rambling on about it? Good point, Fancy Drew.
8. Hot off the heels of Iggy’s “Fancy” and her hit “Boom Clap,” Charli XCX, the 22 year old British phenom, is also scheduled to perform. Or, as the Romans call her, Charli 100. (Less catchy, but still chock full of talent.)
7. Our host, Pitbull, will refuse to answer to Mr. Worldwide backstage. He will only answer to Pit, Mr. Bull, Pitbull, Mr. 305, Armando, Mr. Perez, and the King of Crunk.
6. Number 7 isn’t true.
5. Alright, so far we’ve got a stellar line-up featuring Mary J. Blige, 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX and Pitbull. A legendary assembly of talent. But you know what this list is missing? The voice of a human angel. Thankfully, we’ve taken care of that. Because joining us at the AMAs is a man who can only be described as the breakout star of 2014, Sam Smith. When he opens his mouth to sing, the heavens descend upon us mortals. His single “Stay With Me” hit Number 1 on the Billboard Charts. And on Sunday, November 23, he will take to the stage live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE between 8:00 and 11:00p.m. ET/PT on ABC and give us a little bit of heaven on Earth.
4. We have six…. SIX… various forms of social media with which to join in on the AMAs conversation. Sure, you could probably guess all of these, but for the sake of perfection, here they are, in all of their bold-faced glory: “Wow. We’re really doing it guys.” - - The 21st Century
3. Did we mention that the show will air live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC? What’s that? We just did? Just making sure.
2. Here’s a fun thing: Right before the ABC broadcast, viewers can fire up their WIFI and watch the Coca-Cola Red Carpet LIVE! Pre-show, which will be live-stream all of our fabulous celebrity guests and their respective AMA red carpet journeys starting at 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT on November 23rd at Yahoo Live, the official digital distributor of the AMA Experience this year. You can also watch the livestream at TheAMAs.com and ABC.com. Look how many options there are! You have no excuse for missing this livestream. (I said no excuse.)
1. There are plenty more surprise reveals left for the 2014 AMAs… this is only the beginning. Follow us on Twitter @TheAMAs and maybe we’ll DM you some other surprises! (No, not pics. Relax.)
