Wow what a fantastic show last night at the beautiful Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor! Eric Burdon and The Animals with Special Guests, The Howling Diablos were just fantastic. The whole night was so inspiring..

Hadn't gone to see a show in almost a year..I had seen so many in the past few years that I really just needed a break. But when my friend Tino Gross announced that the Howling Diablos were opening for rock legend Eric Burdon in my town..I had to go to this gig.

Rob King the great drummer from Destroy All Monsters was my partner for the show..I thought of Rob immediately as the perfect person to go with me to this show.  Rob's Dad owned King's Music in Ann Arbor for decades and Rob grew up around the finest musicians that came and played in A2.  Rob is like having a personal music professor.. he explained the techniques and the instruments in detail to me. Really interesting...

Eric Burdon

Eric is in his early 70s now and in great form..he was so adorable..I loved the way he just sauntered onto the stage with no introduction or fanfare. Kind of surprised the audience! His manner was so casual..as if we were in his living room watching him play.

It seems to be so difficult for legendary rock players to transition into playing their music as they get older.  Eric made this transition perfectly.

If you have kept up with Eric Burdon over the decades, you know how he evolved so beautifully with the highly talented bands he assembled after The Animals blew up in 1966. The Animals went from guitar, bass,drums, to an orchestra.

His band was over the top fantastic...

Eric's band was so clean and clear,  magically it was music...I apologize for not knowing the names of the players as they were not listed in the program or announced anywhere. So all I can refer to is is the guy on the Hammond B3, the girl on keyboard/strings, flute and back up vocals, the lead guitarist stage left and the lead guitarist with bowler hat stage right, the drummer, and percussionist/conga/bongo player..and the amazingly quiet but steady bass player in the left side of the drummer.

It was so much fun for me to see my friends The Howling Diablos, play in A2 and at the Michigan. It is such a lovely venue with a great stage and acoustics. I had never seen the Diablos play in a theater before.

The audience was packed with the happiest crowd of folks! It felt like 2 thousand people with cabin fever who finally escaped! Everyone was so friendly and excited to see Eric Burdon. Rob and I had such great seats too! 11th row dead center. Really great few and perfect for sound..Eric Burdon's large diamond earring in his left ear kept blinding me! LOL

Haven't seen the Diablos in quite awhile so I really came to see them as much as Eric Burdon. Let's share a little BIO.....

The Howling Diablos rockin, funky, blues jam style is well known in Detroit, and everywhere they have toured, as a great live music experience. Since their formation in the 90’s they have toured with and opened for acts including George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, Alice Cooper, Albert Collins, Ben Harper, Hank Williams Jr, NRBQ, Incubus and The James Gang as well as headlining their own shows.

Really fun moment was watching Rob King witness the Howling Diablos playing their signature piece "Go Gene (Krupa) Go".  It is over 11 minutes long and a drum tribute to Gene Krupa and Johnny Bee. Had to keep an eye on Rob and he was about to go into a drummer's coma! Don't think he blinked for the entire 11 minutes!!

Rob and I both just loved the girl who played flute on Spill the Wine...she was dancing around the stage while playing and we haven't seen anything like that since Jethro Tull at Olympia a hundred years ago....She sang, played the keyboard with all the other instruments programed into it...I swear I will find these young band members name and add them as soon as I get a message back from Eric's team....

Paying special attention to the instruments that were used on the original recordings, if you close your eyes, you would swear that you are back in the sixties and the Beatles are live on stage.

DETROIT — Confidence in a bottomless well of musical talent in and from Detroit has always been the guiding spirit behind Don Was' annual Detroit All-Star Revue show at the Concert of Colors. And the sixth edition of the concept on Sunday, July 7, at Orchestra Hall certainly supported Was' notion.

After focusing on jazz last year, Was returned to a diverse rock, blues and R&B lineup during this year's 14-act affair, which started off with a buoyant Motown song-and-dance act by the Mosaic Youth Theatre and touched on the ripping blues of guitarists Emanuel Young and Howard Glazer, the raw, punked-up rockabilly of Horse Cave Trio and modern rock craft of Hounds Below and the Handgrenades.

Americana singer-songwriter Katie Grace took a bluesy turn with her "It's Hard Being a Woman in a World of Men," as did the Howling Diablos with a spirited "Car Wash" — joined briefly by frontman Martin "Tino" Gross' four-year-old grandson Carter and the white-suited Rev. Robert Jones and his wife, Sister Berniece, on a down 'n' dirty rendering of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move." FULL REVIEW HERE

Johnny Bee Badanjek has done more for rock n roll than anyone. His discography is just off the planet.  As I was researching different bands to showcase recently...I discovered that damn near everyone one of these groups had a "BEE" connection... Mitch Ryder, The Rockets, Michael Katon, Huck Johns, Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, Broken Toys, Nils Lofgren, Max Weinberg, The Detroit Cobras, Brownsville Station, The Romantics, The Look, The Howling Diablos, Dr. John, Albert King and many many more.... Happened to be looking at some Detroit venue information tonight and I ran into the Facebook page for The Legendary Cobo Hall Documentary film.  This is a documentary about the famed Cobo Arena (Hall) in Detroit.  All the biggest shows played Cobo.

I attended countless shows there and eventually ended up working there in the 80's.  My dream as a kid was to be a rock music stage manager..Never ended up doing that but I hired a ton of them! LOL These two guys Jake Hall and Doug Akers are the films creators. Here is the overview of the movie:

The Legendary Cobo (The Legendary Cobo LLC) is showcasing the amazing story of Cobo Arena by creating a truly entertaining portrait of its event history from 1960 to present day and the impact it has had on not only the city of Detroit but also the World.

"Another Detroit music pioneer, legendary drummer Johnny "Bee" Badanjek (Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels, Detroit, The Rockets, Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper etc. etc.) came down to Cobo and shared some great insider stories while he took the film directors on a tour of some of the seldom seen areas of Cobo Arena. Universally loved and respected by all...Bee is the real deal.  I have never heard a cross word about him or from him.  Always has time for interviewers and fans...He is so funny and patient with others who want his attention...which is everybody he meets!

Johnny is a gifted drummer, no doubt one of the very best...he also is a very good songwriter and a damn good singer too! Here is a video of his band The Rockets and he wrote this song..."Taking it Back"

Bee's songs launched the Rockets into national prominence, and proved his ability to score consistently on the nation's pop music charts ("Can't Sleep", "Turn Up the Radio","Takin' It Back").

Johnny is also the most incredible painter.  His style is very distinctive...kind of Van Gogh meets Picasso with a rock n roll drummer perspective! Recordings include “Beatnik Mambo”(Teenage), “Live”(Top Dog) and Green Bottle”(Overture). The Bass Brothers, now teamed with Eminem, produced the title track, “Green Bottle”, a local hit.

“Good Rockin Tonight”(Sire), an Ahmet Ertegun produced tribute to Sun Records, features the Diablos cut “Wine Spo Dee O Dee” with a guest appearance from Kid Rock. This record also spawned a film for the PBS series, “American Masters”, featuring a performance by the band.

The Diablos appeared on Fat Possum releases by Nathaniel Mayer and RL Burnside that were produced by Tino Gross. Their latest release is the critically acclaimed Car Wash(Alive).

The Ruiners Shake,Rattle and Moan 

Just got an email from Funky D Producer Tino Gross... Tino and I (and many others) are so excited to see the Ruiners getting their due....

Any band from Detroit has to be mindful of the past musical history of the city. Gods in all that is even remotely fast, loud, and soulful, MC5, Iggy, Alice etc... Now whether a band chooses to ignore, embrace or just bite off it is the question.

The Ruiners have embraced it's hometown rock n roll heros and not only honored them but have made fans of many of the musicians they grew up watching. A Ruiners live performance is the stuff you tell your kids about,and this is where they do things best. The bands last record Happy Birthday Bitch did a wonderful job capturing the bands energy and excitement. How in the heck can producer Tino Gross (Funky D Records,Howling Diablos) expect to top it?

They decided to write songs right in the studio and record em live, fresh off the shelf. Risky approach for most but the end result with The Ruiners latest platter "Shake Rattle & Moan" is in my opinion the best effort yet from the band. You will hear a band let loose with more a vintage sound, wider vocal expanses,deeper grooves,and like everything The Ruiners do, Its loaded with an extra large portion of fun.
