ARTIST NINA FRIDAY'S EARLY RUSSIAN LIFE...
I first met Ms Nina Friday on her birthday in 2009. We met at the first Ruiner's gig I ever saw. I fell in love with Nina and The Ruiners band and then discovered Nina's paintings later. She is a phenomenon... so humble, so gorgeous, and so talented. Nina's story is so compelling. I really didn't know the back story of Nina's life before she came to the US. Gratefully she has created a much better world for herself..yet... sadness remains... watch her story... We love you Nina....XK
Nina, a beautiful Russian Immigrant escaped the Russian mob and has built 2 successful careerS in Detroit. Hear her poignant story about the murder of her parents and her eventual escape from communist rule.
Nina Friday is a self taught painter and musician born and raised in St. Petersburg Soviet Russia. Her paintings are inspired by the history, the people and dark beauty of ancient Russia. After the tragic murder of her parents by hand of the Russian mafia, she fled to the United States, leaving all she knew and had behind. Despite the despair and financial setbacks, she persevered and followed creative pursuits.
Lonely and isolated in a strange new country, and without family to rely on, she worked difficult manual labor positions, took odd modeling jobs and slept on floors and couches all the while creating a future for herself, and honing her skills as a self taught visual artist.
The subject matter in her works are primarily inspired from the dingy, poor and Dickensesque playmates and street urchins from her childhood, coupled with her own experiences and memories of growing up in a turbulent and impoverished Russia. The friends and culture she holds dear, are remembered by her for their blue blood elegance and stoic veil of sadness, reminiscent of persecuted saints and the lost nobles of Imperial Russia.

THE RUINERS NEW "SHAKE RATTLE AND MOAN" VINYL LP!!!
Hey gang just received my copies of The New Ruiners Vinyl LP and CD "Shake Rattle and Moan". Been playing them all day...!! This Lp/Cd is BIG FUN...The Ruiners invented "Garage/Glam" and they fully live up to that tag...I have seen them live many many times and they never disappoint! This album captures the flaming energy of their stage show onto vinyl and digital...Totally.....
Such a brilliant move for the Ruiners to hook up with Funky Daddy himself, Tino Gross... Tino produces with such a gritty Detroit funky intensity with really smooth musicianship ...genuine grit..he brings the Ruiners into a bit darker place which matches their exciting live performances and it is exactly what they need....IMO xK

PUNK GLOBE REVIEWS THE NEW RUINERS SHAKE RATTLE AND MOAN CD!!!
FROM PUNK GLOBE...
Any band from Detroit has to be mindful of the past musical history of the city. Gods in all that is even remotely fast, loud, and soulful, MC5, Iggy, Alice etc... Now whether a band chooses to ignore, embrace or just bite off it is the question.
The Ruiners have embraced it's hometown rock n roll heros and not only honored them but have made fans of many of the musicians they grew up watching. A Ruiners live performance is the stuff you tell your kids about, and this is where they do things best. The bands last record Happy Birthday Bitch did a wonderful job capturing the bands energy and excitement. How in the heck can producer Tino Gross (Funky D Records,Howling Diablos) expect to top it?
They decided to write songs right in the studio and record em live, fresh off the shelf. Risky approach for most but the end result with The Ruiners latest platter "Shake Rattle & Moan" is in my opinion the best effort yet from the band. You will hear a band let loose with more a vintage sound, wider vocal expanses, deeper grooves, and like everything The Ruiners do, Its loaded with an extra large portion of fun. Quite a few sing alongs here-- Read the Full Review Here

NOTHING IS SAFE WITH THE RUINERS:METROMIX DETROIT
Nothing is safe in the path of the Ruiners, Detroit’s most notoriously rocking party band. Led by the dynamic male-female combo of Rick Lappin and his sexy cohort, Nina Friday, the Ruiners have blazed a reputation for party rock since the group arrived on the Detroit scene in 1997.
In the band’s early years, music wasn’t always the main focus. The Ruiners were known for destroying everything from washing machines to televisions to vacuums, as well as frolicking through a sea of shredded paper. The shows were messy but loads of fun. “The biggest problem I always had was I put the revolution before the cause,” says Lappin. “That was always my approach to art or life.”
These days, the focus is more on the music and its garage-glam sound. But as Lappin points out: “Every once in a while I might bring a motorcycle to the show and ride it through the bar.” So there’s still that anything-can-happen element at a Ruiners show.
While the Ruiners got lots of attention for the onstage antics, Lappin always had more in mind.
“It got kind of expensive and it didn’t give people a good feeling about the band,” he says. “I started wanting to be able to perform real songs instead of throwing the mic in the crowd or screaming or sticking it in a wash machine and making loud noises with it.”
On Saturday, the band will release, “Shake, Rattle & Moan,” a collection of songs penned primarily by Lappin. A party to celebrate is planned at PJ’s Lager House in Detroit.
The album was recorded at Funky D Studios in Royal Oak with producer Tino Gross, the front man of the Howling Diablos.
“He was much needed,” Lappin says. “We came in there and started jamming, and we didn’t have any idea what we were going to do. I wrote a number of songs on the spot in the studio. We’ve never had the opportunity to burn through tape like that and try stuff. A lot of it fell to the cutting-room floor, but there was a lot of stuff that wouldn’t have sounded so good without Tino’s approach to it.”
The album will be released on Gross’ Funky D Records label. “I always loved the band live and I wanted the record to sound more like the Ruiners onstage,” says Gross. “Rick and Nina are excellent live front people. The shows they put on are so wild and cool that it’s like, ‘How do we get that vibe on a record?’ I was looking for that Stooges thing, the way they cut that first album. We basically just set them up as a live act in the studio and pressed ‘record’ to get the feel, that kind of crazy energy that they have. I think that happened on this album. I was really happy with how it ended up.”
Guest performers on the album include Jimmie Bones of Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker band, DJ Linda Lexy, who provides some vocals, and Jerri Allen, who is an occasional bass player in the Ruiners.
Along with Lappin and Nina Friday, the band features drummer Rob Moon, guitarist Justin Hall and bassist Liz Scaris.
Gorevette and Awesome Jarvis & the Whales open the show. Lexy will host. Doors at 8 p.m. Saturday, PJ’s Lager House, 1254 Michigan, Detroit. 313-961-4668. $5.

Michael Imperioli with Kimmer!!
OK OK OK everyone knows that Kimmer is a huge SOPRANOS fan and guess who was in Detroit last night?? Michael Imperioli the actor who played Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos!!!! Thanks so much to photographer and pal Larry H Leitner! Thanks for getting the tough shots for me!!
I even heard a fan tell Michael that Tony Soprano was wrong to kill him off in the SUV like he did!!! LOL How exciting to see Michael in person. He was so gracious and patient with his many fans...(myself included)
Rick Ruiner Michael Imperioli and Nina Friday

Rick Ruiner lead vocalist of The Ruiners.... invited Kimmer to the VIP party and we were so happy to come out to support Them! I tried for a week to obtain a photo pass.... THE HOWLING DIABLOS: MADHATTER'S LOVE FEST
Stanley T. Madhatter (RIP)
Wow what a fantastic turnout last night for the Howling Diablos show at Guy Hollerins! That place was standing room only and it is a huge place. I walked in about 8:30p and it was already smokin...
The Howling Diablos and I planned ahead to give a short testimonial for Stanley T. Madhatter. This was the perfect opportunity as so many friends and fans were onsite. I almost chickened out but Tino Gross talked me into it. Yikes! Between songs Tino gave a wonderful speech about the Hatter and then introduced me...
All I remember is saying... "ARE YOU READY TO ROCK N ROLL?" The same words that Hatter always used to begin his band introductions. The standing room only crowd roared YEAH!!! Now I understand why Hatter loved that gig! Gee what a thrill to hear that huge crowd cheer for him!
The Howling Diablos never disappoint! No matter how many times I have watched them perform it is always fresh and funky... Here is the line up of tunes signed by the boys last night.
My Handycam was working but I just was having so much fun that I forgot to use it. So I had three short clips and put them together as a video snapshot of the energy of love last night for Hatter. It was a giant hug fest last night so work was out of the question...
Rick Ruiner his gal Nina Friday were there when I arrived and it was so great to see them. Hatter just adored them and we saw them play often. We met them for the first time together when Hatter and I went to see Detroit bassist Ron Cooke's band Dead City Prophets at Paychecks. We fell in love with them that night...
Rick Ruiner was really having fun last night as was the packed house! Standing room only and the huge dance floor was mobbed. Fabulous! Rick was assisting Tino and Bee drumming on a beer keg! We loved it!
Ivan Kral and his girl Cindy Hudson were all grins watching the Diablos rock the room. It was great to see Hatter's pal Greg Charles in the audience too.
Rick Ruiner and Lovely Nina Friday
So happy to see all my friends come out to honor Hatter and enjoy a fun night of entertainment which is what Hatter lived for. He loved to hear the crowd cheer and cheer they did..
Bee was in a great mood like always and we had fun before the Diablos took the stage. I dropped by their room to deliver a tee shirt to Tino. I haven't seen the guys in a few months and we were all happy and sad at the same time. They were really sad over Hatter's passing as was everyone last night. Even people who did not know Stanley felt the vibe in that ABSOLUTELY PACKED room. I think we had 500 peeps in there. The room was perfect with a glow of love and throngs of young and old alike dancing their buns off to THD.
Rick and Nina put on a fantastic dance exhibition! Splits and everything. We all enjoyed that from afar! Too old for that stuff... Boy were they fantastic to see.
Thank you to everyone who came out last night and cheered for my friend Hatter. It was a beautiful night to remember such a beautiful man and Hatter's kind spirit will never be forgotten...

SATURDAY NIGHT WITH THE SEATBELTS AND RUINERS!!!
Cool Poster by Guitarist Rick Mills!
Hey gang! Finally got all my photos edited and lucky for all of us Alex Upshur came out to video The Seatbelts and Ruiners last night! He has such talent and a fantastic camera... am so envious. Alex is working on a music video for The Seatbelts and was there shooting incidental shots. His website is GreenRayStudios.com
I begged him to make a video for my story and it is in processing right now! It is ready poor Alex worked on this all day! Thanks so much Alex!!! Your video is so high quality! I wish I liked editing video better than I do...
Fabulous Guitarist Rick Mills
Nina Friday Susie Forkin and Catherine Hunter
Well The Madhatter and I got a late start last night and arrived at Smalls in Hamtramck around 10:30 pm and the place was hoppin! So glad to see so many of my friends were there to see these 2 really great bands.
Well it was great fun seeing the Seatbelts and The Ruiners play again. I was there for the SB's reunion show in August. The pairing of the Seatbelts together with the Ruiners was a brilliant idea!
I was fairly certain that Alex Upshur would be there supporting his dad Greg Upshur lead singer for the SB's. It was great news for me that when I walked into the show room I saw a young camera guy. Had never met Alex in person so I just handed him my RK post card so he would know who I was without me having to scream over the band.

Liz Ruiner!
Hey we want to talk with Liz! She magically appears then disappears too! Hey Liz I want to interview you! I did stand right by Liz and watched her play (so good!) and she reminds me of Suzi Quatro with her low slung bass guitar!
Gaetano Urso Skid Marx and Tony Bojanic
Finally met guitarist Gaetano Urso and so charming and sweet! He so kindly took my camera and lined up a huge group shot! He nailed it in one take! Such a nice guy and great musician too!
RK, Rich and Michelle Houndsell
Linda Lexy Nina Friday and Rick Ruiner
I came in and sat with Rick Ruiner and his friends from school. Really nice folks. What a total drag though is I lost one of my new Red leather gloves! So bummed... just got them too.
Didn't see the Hatter all night until after the show ended. I heard him introducing the bands. It was a very lovely room with everyone in fine spirit. Hamtramck is a nice town with great clubs to go see a show. Friendly and helpful. One of the Smalls' owners even helped look for my missing red gloves.
Also on hand were Ms Lexy and her favorite drummer Tino Gross of the Howling Diablos. We also got a new set of autographed drum sticks to add to our shelf of honor! Tony B gave me his sticks from the gig last night! I love them and Tony B does such a great job drumming for the Seatbelts.
It was so nice to see Wendy Starz and Susie Forkin of the Motor City Rah Rahs. They sparkle up every room they walk in. Such spirit and joy!
