CHRIS KLONDIKE MASUAK: VIVEIRO ROCKS!


Today's guest post is from Chris Klondike Masuak Canadian-born Australian rock musician, guitarist, songwriter and record producer.

I pick Pony Boy up from the bus stop after school most days.

If it’s sunny I wait sitting on a brick wall swinging my legs and looking out over a 12th-century convent to the low green coastal mountains, disappearing into soft haze.

The bus swings around the corner pretty much right on the button and Pony Boy bursts out, talking a mile a minute about how he didn’t do anything at school.


We’ll stop at a bar on the way home. Spanish bars aren’t the frosted glassed sleazy dives we used to stand in fear and wonder outside of as kids in northern Canada. He’ll continue his monologue over hot chocolate and churros, stopping occasionally to talk to one of the patrons in whatever language suits them, which in this joint usually means “Deep Galego”.

Most of the old folks in town know Pony Boy. On those sunny days they’ll all be out sitting along the walkway beside the bay in the precious sunshine. He’ll stop and say hello to them, making sure that the ones who don’t see so well know it’s him. He shakes their hands or gives high fives. They’ll talk for a while about this and that while I stand back and watch.

If we don’t notice them when we walk past, they’ll wave and yell “Hola!”. He waves back and yells, telling them where we’re going.

We seem to have become a fixture. If I’m out on the street by myself, people I don’t even know will ask “You’re by yourself today? Where’s your boy?”

As we walk along he keeps up a running monologue, mostly about the various ways you can defeat zombies or the mechanical attributes of the robots he likes to build.


We’ll usually end up walking along beside the water to the music school and we’ll stand outside for a while, playing by the antique cannons and listening to the students clamouring away.

Violin concertos, bagpipes, rock bands...it’s the luck of the draw on any given day.

Some days we’ll walk further along the waterfront to the sports centre.

In July you can forget about swimming for a few weeks. Viveiro is home to Resurrection Fest, one of Europe’s biggest metal/thrash festivals. When that’s on, it’s impossible to get to the pool. It’s annoying.

A couple of years ago Motorhead did their final concert there. Last year Iron Maiden played. This year it was KISS and Scorpion.


We can hear it all from my place at the far end of the bay..

During the festival our medieval fishing village is choked with people. At first the locals were worried about all those strange kids with tattoos, piercings, dressed in black.

These days, they don’t even bother calling in any extra police. The 60,000 concert goers cause less trouble and are infinitely more polite than any couple of drunken Brits!

In August there’s a giant festival stage set up in the town plaza. Every night music drifts out across the water and echoes against the hills.

The bars are overflowing and while you listen to the concerts you can fill up on the free tapas!

The other night I was making my way back home after playing a Rock 4 West Papua benefit. It was 4 AM and the streets were still buzzing with activity. Some kids recognised me and yelled “Hey, Masuak!”

Iconic Jethro Tull Guitarist Martin Barre Releases New Album Roads Less Travelled

Los Angeles - Martin Barre, best-known as guitarist in Jethro Tull - one of the biggest selling prog bands of all time, releases his new solo album Roads Less Travelled on Cleopatra Records on October 12, 2018.

Barre has developed his own distinctive style within the framework of Jethro Tull, and his instantly recognizable and original sound form the basis of this album. Roads Less Travelled features 11 original tracks by Barre, which reflect the last 50 years of his esteemed musical career.

Reflecting on the tracks & recording of the album, Barre says “I've concentrated on improving my songwriting over the last few years and as a result, I am really pleased with this new CD. Barre's solo on Jethro Tull's 1971 hit “Aqualung” has been repeatedly voted as one of the top guitar solos of all time. Barre has been cited as an important influence by many virtuoso players, including Joe Bonamassa, Steve Vai & Jo Satriani and can count the likes of Mark Knopfler and Geddy Lee amongst his many fans.

About Martin Barre

Barre was the guitarist for rock band Jethro Tull from 1969 – 2012. Jethro Tull have sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and 5 platinum albums among them and were described by Rolling Stone as “one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands.” Barre appeared on all but their debut album during his 33 year stint with Tull and is the longest-serving member after Ian Anderson.

For four decades, Barre's career focused on Jethro Tull but in the 1990s Barre began to perform as a solo artist and has since released 7 solo studio albums. On these recordings, Barre combined rock and guitar-oriented fusion in his sound.

Martin's guitar playing has earned him a high level of respect and recognition; he was voted 25th best solo ever in the USA and 20th best solo ever in the UK for his playing on “Aqualung.” His playing on the album Crest of a Knave earned him a Grammy award in 1988.

In addition to his Jethro Tull and solo work, Martin has worked live with many other artists including: Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Gary Moore, Jo Bonamassa and Chris Thompson and has shared a stage with such legends as Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

DAVE DAVIES: LEGENDARY GUITARIST OF THE KINKS ANNOUNCES NEW LP DECADE

Founding member of The Kinks, Dave Davies has announced the upcoming release of Decade, a new collection of unreleased songs recorded in the 1970's. Davies has also shared the lead track from the record, "Cradle To The Grave," which was recorded in 1973. Decade will be released on October 12th via Red River Entertainment and Green Amp Records, and Davies will be on tour in early 2019.

In what may be considered the sequel to 2011’s Hidden Treasures, which chronicled Davies' solo recordings from the 1960's, Decade pulls back the curtain on the legendary guitarist and songwriter's unreleased works spanning 1971 to 1979.

Davies writes, "I am so pleased that after all this time these tracks are being released to see the light of day. These songs have been silently nagging at me to be recognised all these years. At last I can proudly present this album Decade to the world. I do hope you all enjoy the music."

Years prior to the issue of his first “proper” solo album, 1980’s AFL1-3603, Davies was working on the fascinating tracks that make up Decade. The tapes were unearthed by his sons Simon and Martin from “under beds, in attics, in storage,” and properly mixed and mastered in a way that lets these songs shimmer and shine even brighter than they did at inception.

Any album recorded over the span of 10 years runs the risk of ending up wildly erratic in tone and style, and yet, Dave’s Decade is surprisingly cohesive, the songs working together beautifully as songs on great albums do.

The period 1973 to 1975 saw The Kinks make the move into their own recording studio, Konk, which Davies took a major role in setting up and developing. “I’m always really into the sound, and the mixes, and gadgets..." writes Davies. "I was able to go in, and make what I thought were demos—these recordings."

Listening to the contemporary, FM radio-friendly quality of these songs, it’s hard to fathom that these solo tracks remained under wraps, particularly as these were born in the aftermath of clear Dave Davies triumphs such as “Strangers” and “You Don’t Know My Name,” change-of-pace songs that added considerable value to the early ‘70s Kinks albums they appeared on.

But with brother Ray deep into the creation of a series of high-concept albums on which Dave’s songs had no apparent place, these Dave Davies gems remained unissued on both the solo and band fronts. Davies explains, "We were busy, and we were touring,

The Kinks were very vibrant that whole period of time. It wasn’t really until the end of the ‘70s that I started to really take my writing seriously. I should have done it anyway—because what’s ‘serious’ and ‘not serious’? Just get stuff out, you know?” In 1978, a song contemporaneous with these sessions, “Trust Your Heart”, was chosen to appear on The Kinks’ Misfits album, and Davies became very active as a solo artist at last, with a series of well-regarded albums in the 1980s and beyond.

A long-time inductee of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Dave Davies helped shape the landscape of rock and pop music across generations. A seasoned yet spontaneous rock-n-roll visionary, Davies was named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Dave has released several critical acclaimed albums on Red River Entertainment including his most recent album Open Road, a collaborative project with his son Russ, released in March 2017 and acclaimed by Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, Paste, Spin, The Washington Post, and many more.

The Deacon Of Rock Bites Back!

“Before The Lights Go Out” is long time Alice Cooper/Lou Reed Guitarist Steve Hunter’s latest solo album. The cover art and title make a statement about his failing eyesight, but don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a quiet wave goodbye. As soon as you put on the first track, you will know that this is more like a Blues Rock Declaration of Independence! There are sexy grooves, luscious guitar tones and melodies galore.

As with all Hunter’s releases, there is some diversity and sound imagery, not least of which is Tienes Mi Corazón where alongside his nylon string improvisation comes the sound of his own heart. And listen out for Joe Satriani adding his fire to the heat of “Mojo Man.”

Also joining Steve on a couple of tracks are two great Bass players: Erik Scott can be heard on “Mojo Man,” Erik is also an Alice Cooper alumni. On “Under The Bodhi Tree” is Andy Stoller. Steve and Andy toured together with Tracy Chapman during the “Telling Stories” album period, most recently Andy has been touring with Ann Wilson of Heart.


Says Steve, “This album was a real joy for me on many levels. A big part of the inspiration and motivation that kept me going; was from all the people out there who had faith in me and encouraged me through the entire process with their donations and comments. It was really a wonderful experience having you all be a part of it. It’s my deepest hope and desire that you all enjoy the music on this album as much as I enjoyed making it. From his 1973 solos on Alice Cooper’s “Billion Dollar Babies” album, his legendary acoustic work on Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill,” his “Intro” to Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” and his searing opening solos on Aerosmith’s version of “Train Kept A Rolling” Most recently he can be heard on Alice Cooper’s 2017 album “Paranormal” making this his ninth Cooper album appearance. The Deacon is not done yet but his life is evolving! VOTE FOR THE MC5 TO BE INDUCTED IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME!


GREAT News from AP just came in today that the Cleveland Rock Hall of Fame has once again nominated the Mighty MC5!!


The number of punk fans who can ID an MC5 song that doesn't begin with a profanity-laden promise of jam-kicking-out is ever-dwindling, but they still feel Important -- one of the defining names of proto-punk -- and no one would be tremendously surprised to find out they'd been a down-ballot inductee a decade ago without anyone really noticing. The Stooges are already in and the New York Dolls haven't been nominated in 15 years, the MC5 seems like a solid pick here.




Legendary Drummer Dennis Thompson feels it is a great honor to be nominated with all the many greats of rock and roll history!

Rock Sax Legend From The Beatles to The Eagles, Phil Kenzie Tours to Save Our R&R Sax Solo and Releases New Album

The Last Of The Great Rock Sax Players Phil Kenzie! Saxophonist With The Beatles, John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Al Stewart, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, The Eagles and many Others!

Nashville, TN - With the recent passing of Bobby Keys, the last of the legendary rock sax players still remains - Phil Kenzie! Phil has the great distinction of playing sax on The Beatles legendary 'Let It Be' album! Along with The Beatles, Phil's impressive resume includes recording sessions and tours with such iconic music groups and artists as John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, The Eagles and many others. It's easy to be familiar with Phil Kenzie's superb sax work.

Just recall the soaring solos on Al Stewart's “Year of the Cat” or “Time Passages” still enjoying favored airplay to this day, or the punchy brass intro to “Jet” by Paul McCartney, or the inspired solo on “The Long Run” from “The Eagles Live” album. In fact, this gifted sax player/arranger has lent his masterful touch to hits by everyone from Rod Stewart to Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks and Rosanne Cash to David Bowie, and in the process amassed some nineteen gold and platinum albums! Phil also holds the world record for the highest note ever played on Alto Sax on a solo on a top ten hit record (entry note on the first solo on “Time Passages” by Al Stewart).

A documentary of Phil's incredible musical journey is in progress and is 99% finished. With 120 minutes in length, it is produced by Harry Jarvis an Independent video producer from Nashville TN.

Phil relates, “I'm originally from the Liverpool area in England and in my first band, The Pressmen, I played many of the clubs made legendary by The Beatles, even occasionally sharing billing with the 'Fab Four', including The Cavern and Hamburg's famous Star Club. So it was totally appropriate that I should be asked later to play on the most classic 'swan song' of the century, 'Let It Be'.

This connection continued with my work on recordings for Apple Records, most notably John and Yoko's 'Plastic Ono Band' at Lennon's home in Ascot and all of the horn section work and solos on George Harrison’s 'All Things Must Pass' and playing in the massive sax section on 'Jet' for Paul McCartney and Wings. Through these sessions, I also worked with such notable stars as Eric Clapton, Steven Stills, Peter Frampton, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Doris Troy and Billy Preston.

“As a session man, I was doing gigs around London with Manfred Mann's 'Chapter Three', arranging and performing shows for Jack Good's psychedelic update of Othello entitled 'Catch My Soul', finding time to appear on Paul McCartney's 'Band On The Run' album and to be heavily involved in the hit cult classic 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', playing and recording both the show and the movie; supplying the screaming rock sax for Meatloaf's portrayal of 'Eddie'.

During this time I also worked with Alan Parsons, David Essex, Joan Armatrading, Ian Gillan, Alex Harvey, Leo Sayer, Black Sabbath, Steve Harley, Marc Bolan, Wishbone Ash, Annie Lennox, David Bowie, The Coasters, The Temptations, Arthur Connolly, Mick Ronson, Ian Hunter and Roger Daltrey appearing on his 'Ride a Rock Horse' and 'One Of The Boys' albums and on both David Bowie's 'Diamond Dogs' album and his wildly inventive television special 'The 1980 Floor Show'.

At this point I was asked by Alan Parsons to record what would become a legendary hit 'Year of The Cat' by Al Stewart. In the subsequent tour of America and another hit for Al, 'Time Passages', I caught the attention of Rod Stewart and was asked to join his band, recording with Rod what would turn out to be his biggest album to date 'Blondes Have More Fun'. I would ultimately appear on five albums for Rod including 'Footloose and Fancy Free', 'Foolish Behaviour', 'Rod Stewart Truly Live' and 'Greatest Hits'.”

Now, much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, Phil is releasing a CD titled 'A Night With The Cat'. The album, recorded between 1998 and 2008, has never been released before and is an instrumental depiction of the lyrics/story of “The Year Of The Cat” hit single by Al Stewart, in which Phil plays the world acclaimed hit saxophone solo. Titles on Phil's new CD reflect the lyrics of the song. Phil is backed on 'A Night With The Cat' by Peter White “king of the soft jazz charts”and legendary session players Bob Babbitt and Larry Knechtal.

Says Phil, “The album's listed producers are Phil Kenzie and Michael Snow and the album was recorded partially in Los Angeles and partially in Nashville Tennessee. It was done in my personal recording studios using analog and digital methodology and myself being the recording, mixing and mastering engineer. I am Industry recognized in these fields.

My daughter Anna Pauline Kenzie did all the hand drawn and digitally colored artwork for the CD sleeve which is exceptional. Apart from both composition and musical artistic performances by current top 'Soft Jazz' star Peter White. There are what well might be the final recording performances from two of the biggest iconic pop/rock session artists of our age, Bob Babbitt ( Motown, “Poppa Was A Rolling Stone” etc) and Larry Knechtel (Bread, The Wrecking Crew, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” etc.). These two legends both passed away in recent years. The album contains a composition and a performance by Larry called 'Amazing' which I co-wrote with him.”

In support of his new CD release, plans for Phil's S.O.S.S (Save Our Sax Solo) tour is currently in the works. The show will premier at Jazziz Nightlife on Jan 15th, 2015 in Boca Raton, Florida.
