**NEW** JASON BERK: COMING HOME

Jason sent me a lovely email and I really like his music...take a look and listen :)

From Jason: My new album is called Coming Home and is, well, pretty ‘retro'! Clear influences of The Beatles, Marshall Crenshaw, Elvis Costello, The Mamas & The Papas, Sly & The Family Stone, and Joe Jackson, plus the overall Laurel Canyon sound. This is my second release; my first, Real Love, was hailed by fans and critics, including San Francisco DJs Rosalie Howarth (KFOG) and Steven Seaweed (107.7 The Bone), plus Maui-based host of the syndicated “The Time Machine” radio show, Michael McCartney.

Other fans include “Ghostbusters” performer Ray Parker Jr., former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber (as well as his wife Hope, daughter of ‘Gilligan’s Island’ and ‘Brady Bunch’ creator Sherwood Schwartz), 60’s singer-songwriter Evie Sands, Keith Slettedahl of The 88, and members of legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s backing band.

9 MOST STYLISH MOBSTERS

Al Capone is America's best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city.

John Joseph Gotti, Jr. (October 27, 1940 – June 10, 2002) was an American mobster who became the Boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City.[1] Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty and turned to a life of crime at an early age. Operating out of the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, Gotti quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the crime family's biggest earners and a protégé of Gambino family underboss Aniello Dellacroce.

Sammy the Bull. Originally a mobster for the Colombo crime family, and later for the Brooklyn faction of the Gambinos, Gravano participated in the conspiracy to murder Gambino boss Paul Castellano. He played a key role in planning and executing Castellano's murder. After Castellano's death, Gotti elevated Gravano to underboss. At the time, Gravano was the highest ranking member of the Five Families to break his Cosa Nostra oath and cooperate with the government.

John "Handsome Johnny" Roselli (sometimes spelled Rosselli), aka John F. Stewart aka Colonel Rawlston (July 4, 1905 to sometime between July 28 and August 9, 1976) was an influential mobster for the Chicago Outfit who helped them control Hollywood and the Las Vegas Strip. Roselli was also involved with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) plot to kill Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in the early 1960s. Some conspiracy theorists believe he was also involved with John Fitzgerald Kennedy's assassination.

Thomas Lucchese (December 1, 1899 – July 13, 1967)  Gaetano Lucchese was born on December 1, 1899 in Palermo Sicily and immigrated with his parents Giuseppe and Maria in 1911. They settled in East Harlem, an Italian neighborhood of Manhattan where Lucchese’s father worked as a laborer hauling cement. Lucchese worked in a machine shop to help this family earn money until an accident amputated his right thumb and forefinger in 1915.

Frank Costello was one of the most influential American mobsters... he started his career New York City, New York, contributing heavily to the establishment of a major crime national crime syndicate Frank Costello...his sinister nickname Prime Minister of the Underworld

Benjamin Siegel (Don't call me Bugsy) (February 28, 1906 – June 20, 1947) was with the Luciano crime family. Nicknamed "Bugsy" Siegel was known as one of the most "infamous and feared gangsters of his day". Described as handsome and charismatic, he became one of the first front-page-celebrity gangsters. He was also a driving force behind the development of the Las Vegas Strip.

Meyer Harris "Mickey" Cohen (September 4, 1913 – July 29, 1976) was a gangster based in Los Angeles and part of the Jewish Mafia, and also had strong ties to the American Mafia from the 1930s through 1960s.

Albert Anastasia September 26, 1902 – October 25, 1957) Once known as the "Lord High Executioner" of Murder, Inc. and head of the Gambino Family, Albert Anastasia was one of the most feared bosses in the New York Mafia. Originally from Italy, he allegedly controlled a fierce racketeering business along the New York City waterfront for years.

POLAROID SOCIAL-MATIC TOO LITTLE TOO LATE?

The Polaroid Social-Matic  camers is coming out fall of 2014. This camera features all the same things that smart phones already have except it has a better resolution (14 megapixels) and prints instant photo/stickers. You can edit and add clipart/captions before sharing online which could be fun.

The problem is ..it is another device to carry...put down your smart phone and grab the social-matic? Prying the smart phone out of a user's hands is mostly impossible..

The only way that I can see this camera having any impact is if it was a smart phone...but you already have one of those.

To me is too little, too late...

*UPDATE* LOUIS AND HENRY: THE DETROIT HATTER'S STORY.....

The oldest hat retailer in the United States, Henry the Hatter "has lost its lease and must close" its downtown Detroit location, a news release announced Friday.

The last day of business for the store founded in 1893, with hats worn by such high-profile people as U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and musician George Clinton, is Aug. 5. The other location in Southfield will remain open.

"It's not a good day for independents like me," said Paul Wasserman, 70, owner of Henry the Hatter. His lease on the building at 1307 Broadway is ending, and he said his landlord of 22 years is using an escape clause. "They had the legal right to do what they did. It's their building to do what they see fit." READ MORE

Louie the Hatter (Elias Dellopoulos)

Louie the Hatter was aka Elias Dellopoulos. His son's generation changed the name to Dellas. His son's name was Steven Dellas, but his birth name was ESTATHIOS/STEVEN DELLOPOULOS. Steven Dellopoulos is on his discharge papers from the army... during WWII.

Louie's hats were tagged with the hat maker's logo. For instance, Dobb's was the biggest name. He didn't choose to sew his store logo into the hats...too expensive.

There was quite a rivalry between Louie and Louis. They were not friendly competitors for certain...

 Henry the Hatter

Established in 1893 by Detroit native Henry Komrofsky, Henry the Hatter first opened on Gratiot Ave. Komrofsky had worked for a number of years as a hatter at the John C. Hartz store before opening his own shop. As a businessman, Komrofsky was interested in many aspects of city life.

Henry The Hatter has survived because it has embraced its customers and has adapted to their needs. The highly trained salespeople use their fashion sense to assist customers with selections that flatter not only the customers wardrobe, but they also take into account the style of each hat or cap, to accentuate the customers face and other features.

I am the great-grandson of Louis "The Hatter" Bradlin, and great nephew of Bill Bradlin. I have spent my whole life in Los Angeles, but really like your site. I thought I would pass along the sad news that Bill Bradlin passed away in September of '07. My grandmother, Louis the Hatter's daughter and Bill's sister, also passed away in September. She raised me on stories of the store and Detroit in general.

Keep up the good work, and in this day of gentrification, sites like yours are important.

Sincerely,
Alexis Steppling

This  Louis the Hatter bowler was purchased in the 1950s. Just recently sold on Ebay.. It is marked "Louis the Hatter," and is in excellent condition. It is a  7 3/4 long oval. Sweatband, liner, ribbon, binding and felt are all in perfect shape.

Mr. Bill Bradlin, a army veteran, was a graduate of Cass Tech.  He then started in business with Speedy Laundry, then Bradlin Cleaners and finally Louis the Hatter which evolved into three different locations including the Fisher Building and then 8 Mile and Greenfield.  He then became a rep with his wife as his partner for several companies. Bill was a friend of mine and an exhibitor in many of the Super Sales back in the 1980's

you are the bomb and don't let anyone tell you that bloggers do not do their homework. KIM is spot on and so are your comments. Here is a photo of my Dad, Steve Dellopoulos(Dellas) owner/operator of Louie the Hatter. Everything posted on this thread is exactly correct. Thank you for keeping an important part of the history of Detroit alive. Yep, after arson and armed robbery, Dad sold inventory, padlocked the useless real estate, and opened a Roy Rogers in the suburbs. Shame.
