DETROIT'S FORMER PARK AVENUE HOTEL TO BE IMPLODED JULY 11

Park Avenue hotel left and Hotel Eddystone on right in Detroit

Billy Wilson and I along with Michael Kuentz are going to be there to see this. I am excited about the New Olympia Arena though it is sad that these historic buildings have been abandoned for decades.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The former Park Avenue hotel in Detroit is set to be imploded to make room for the new Red Wings hockey arena, according to Ilitch Holdings.

The controlled demolition is scheduled for 8 a.m. on July 11. The Hotel Park Avenue has been scheduled for demolition, but the Hotel Eddystone next door has been scheduled for renovation.

Olympia Development said they will provide additional street and window cleaning resources on July 11 for those impacted in the area.

Doug Kuiper of Ilitch Holidings issued the following statement Thursday: "The implosion methodology reduces the time and impact of the Harbor Lights removal from a three-month, second shift effort to a single morning. It moderates community impact while allowing the project to continue on its timeline for a September 2017 opening.

All work will follow best practices and city requirements, and we will work closely with residents, businesses and other organizations to ensure a safe demolition with minimal impact on the community. Read Full Story on WXYZ
