DONNA SUMMER PASSED AWAY FROM CANCER...

Donna Summer

LaDonna Adrian Gaines, known by the stage name Donna Summer, was an American singer and songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s. She had a mezzo-soprano vocal range, and was a five-time Grammy Award winner.

Born: December 31, 1948, Boston
Died: May 17, 2012, Florida
Children: Brooklyn Sudano, Amanda Sudano

As TMZ reported, "Disco Queen" Donna Summer will be laid to rest Wednesday during a private ceremony at a church in Nashville, TN. We're told the church is expecting a capacity crowd -- roughly 1,000 people -- but the service is invitation only. The family is adamant ... they don't want the ceremony to become a media spectacle and they've put together a strict guest list consisting of close friends and family members.

It's unclear if any of Donna's famous friends will attend -- but we're told people are flying in from all over the country.

TMZ broke the story ... Donna passed away in Florida last week after battling lung cancer. She was 63.

You know.. I really thought there would be more sentiment from the Gay community, I know she had said things about Gay people when she was very religious but I thought she had made amends for that... but I saw very little coming from the Gay community when she passed.. I know when Viola Wills passed away I saw more chatter.. Of course she embraced the Gays.. But Donna Summer was our first Disco Diva Queen.. I know she did not like being a gay Icon I was very saddened that she passed away.. I think people really did not appreciate her vocals or her contribution to music because of how Disco in this country was slotted as "dance" music and therefor not "real" music.. but the lyrics in some of the songs.. and even what eventually became house/dance/freestyle songs with strong female vocals and a pounding beat.. but a lot of those songs told stories...

very good insight Parvo...in fact she was a mezzo soprano and could actually SING without screaming... I was surprised that there were not more tributes... she was fabulous....RIP Donna...
