THE BARBIE DOLL PREMIERES MARCH 9 1959
On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features.
The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future.
Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character. Originally marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men in tobacco shops, the Lilli doll later became extremely popular with children.
Mattel bought the rights to Lilli and made its own version, which Handler named after her daughter, Barbara. READ FULL STORY

MATTEL SKIPPER DOLL IS 50 TODAY!
Skipper Roberts was a doll created by Mattel in 1964 to be Barbie's younger sister, as well as to oppose controversies directed at Barbie. Since Skipper was introduced, she has changed immensely. When she first came out, she was 9.25 inches in height (compared to Barbie's 11.5 inches), and then as newer versions were released she gradually became taller with an older appearance, eventually turning out to be almost as tall as Barbie. At first, Skipper was available with three different hair colors, but is currently only available with her hair colored black and purple. Usually, Skipper dolls had blue eyes.
Skipper was created, along with Midge, to counteract criticism that claimed Barbie was a sex symbol. Midge's facial appearance was gentler than Barbie's, whereas Skipper was a response to requests that wanted Barbie to have children; however, instead of having a married, pregnant Barbie, which would make her too domestic, Barbie would babysit Skipper.[1] As Barbie's little sister, Skipper was Barbie's first family member sold. Since their introduction in 1964, Skipper dolls have changed drastically READ MORE HERE

RETRO KIMMER LOVES INCURABLE COLLECTORS
Guinness World Record holder for the biggest Vintage Barbie Collector
What is a collector? The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining whatever items are of interest to the individual collector.
Collecting is a huge global hobby...Around the world people collect everything from the tiniest postage stamps to luxury automobiles and jets. And beyond...
Usually collecting begins in childhood and is left behind as we grow up..ala rock collecting, insect and butterfly collecting, dolls, miniature toy cars and thousands of other items were coveted by children.
But as the "baby boomer" generation has grown older their vintage collections are still a huge hobby for many. From the very inexpensive collections of things like swizzle sticks and match books to the more high end vintage Barbie's and Star Wars collections, we are a generation of collectors....
This man is a true Barbie lover. Notice that all of his Barbies are out of their boxes. That makes his collection less valuable but loved by the collector none the less.
Actress Debbie Reynolds amassed a huge Hollywood memorabilia collection over the years. The Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady" is one of her pieces. Debbie sold her collection in 2011 for over 18 million dollars!
"The Incurable Collector," A&E TV show, had no problem finding people who collected interesting, unique and bizarre items. This was one of my favorite tv shows but sadly it went off the air. There are a few video clips which I'll share in this story.
One show featured the woman who collects swizzle sticks. "She has a thousand swizzle sticks," said the series' executive producer Pam Burke. "It is one of the more inexpensive [hobbies] to get involved in."
Each episode featured three experts: "Garage Sale Susan" Goldberg, "The Instant Appraiser" Niles Grace and Usha Subramanian, who focuses on "fantastic finds."
Host and narrator was Emmy Award-winning actor John Larroquette, who is an incurable collector of first editions by 20th century writers.
Larroquette has approximately 3,000 books. "Everything is well-protected and on display," he says. "I love reading them. My wife gets irritated sometimes when I fall asleep in bed with a signed William Faulkner on my chest."
A lot of boys in my neighborhood collected Match Box cars. I recently interviewed a 60 year old Hot Wheels car collector!
I have never met an unhappy collector! Most people who are incurable collectors find great joy in finding new things and displaying them in their homes.
A mighty happy Wizard of Oz collector.
I have a some W of Oz things , a Wicked Witch of the West clock, Ruby Slippers snow globe, an 18" tall Tin Man, and lots of refrigerator magnets. I also have a small Barbie Collection, glass animal figurines, rock memorabilia/posters most autographed. What do you collect??
Some of my favorite episodes featured Wizard of Oz collectors as this video shows...

IN A BARBIE WORLD: DAVID TRINIDAD INTERVIEW
I had this case and the Blonde Bubble Haired Barbie too
I found this very cool article today, Interview with David Trinidad and thought some of my incurable collector readers would enjoy this! I love David Trinidad's work and now I know we have a lot more than poetry in common... I am dying to go see his makeup and doll collections!
David Trinidad: My whole adult life I’ve collected books and movies—I’m a sort of a DVD addict. I don’t think of those, though, as real collections. For certain authors I love, I’ll buy different editions of the same books—not to read, but as objects. In that regard I think of book collecting as real collecting. But I have more formal collections.
Yardley Slicker Lipstick Collection
The biggest ones are vintage Barbies and Yardley makeup from the ’60s. Yardley made a line of makeup for teenage girls that was very Mod—their lip stick/gloss was called Slicker and their eye shadow was called Glimmerick, and the packaging had lots of colorful stripes and curlicues.
I also have some minor collections: comic books; Troll dolls; a line of dollhouse furniture, also from the ’60s, called Petite Princess; board games; Liddle Kiddles, which were these small dolls produced by Mattel; toy theaters; and movie memorabilia, particularly Valley of the Dolls.

MADMEN MEETS BARBIE!

I love the Joan doll the most but Betty is really great too.
Here is the new trailer for Madmen 4 for us "Maddicts"
About the Show
Set in 1960s New York, the sexy, stylized and provocative AMC drama Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell.
AMC’s Mad Men, winner of three consecutive Golden Globes and back-to-back Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series, returns for a new season rife with possibilities. Last season stunned audiences with its cliffhanger finale, as Don Draper’s professional and personal lives unexpectedly imploded. This year, Jon Hamm and the rest of the breakout ensemble continue to captivate us as they grapple with an uncertain new reality. Welcome to a Mad New World.
Created by Emmy and Golden Globe winning executive producer Matthew Weiner, Mad Men Season 4 is anchored by an award-winning ensemble cast, including Golden Globe winner Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Jared Harris, Rich Sommer, Aaron Staton, Robert Morse and Kiernan Shipka.
The Premise: The series revolves around the conflicted world of Don Draper (Hamm), the biggest ad man (and ladies man) in the business, and his colleagues at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Advertising Agency. As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. The series also depicts authentically the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960s traditional family values.
Check out the new series video featurettes HERE that will get you up to speed on all the lies, scandal and intrigue behind the show.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBIE!
It was 1960 and I was 4 years old when I received my first Barbie for Christmas. My first doll has been reproduced and I have her sitting beside me as I type this post! In my closet are over twenty unique Barbies I have collected over the years.
I have a few that are my favorites beginning with my original doll the brunette ponytail with the "Solo in the Spotlight" outfit. I have the "Silken Flame" Barbie too. A bona fide member of the barbie collector club to this day.

Silken Flame
Back then Barbie came with just heels and a swim suit. The outfits were packaged in very cool pink and white striped packages that hung on racks.
They sold for about 1.00. Fancier outfits were more. I remember the Bridal Outfit was 4.99. My sisters and I had rousing fun role playing with these dolls. We won't go into that... Ken was boring...
Skipper had cool hair but she was just cute. My cousin had the ultimate Barbie Dream House!! I wanted that soooo bad. Here is the best picture I could find of it.
