PATSY CLINE: AMERICAN MASTERS PBS MAR 4 2017

PBS Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Virginia, Patsy Cline defined modern country music by using her singular talent and heartwrenching emotional depth to break down barriers of gender, class and genre.

In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity towards which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry gender biases and her own personal hardships and professional missteps, she achieved success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30 (March 5, 1963).

The new documentary Patsy Cline: AMERICAN MASTERS premieres nationwide beginning March 4 on PBS (check local listings, see below for confirmed airdates) during Women's History Month as part of the 31 st season of THIRTEEN's AMERICAN MASTERS series. 2017 marks the 85 th anniversary of Cline's birth (September 8, 1932).

Narrated by Rosanne Cash, Patsy Cline: AMERICAN MASTERS examines the roots of Cline's impact in both personal and cultural terms to illuminate how she arrived at a pivotal moment in the evolution of American culture and, with Decca Records producer Owen Bradley, synthesized country, pop and rock in a new way to create the NASHVILLE Sound.

With exclusive access to the Cline estate, the film features rare performances of such Cline classics as "Walkin' After Midnight," "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray," "Come On In," "I Fall to Pieces," "Crazy," "You Made Me Love You" and more.

The documentary also features exclusive archival interviews with Cline's contemporaries and new interviews with a wide range of artists who have been influenced by Cline: LeAnn Rimes, Kacey Musgraves, Rhiannon Giddens, Wanda Jackson, Bill Anderson, Beverly D'Angelo, Callie Khouri, Reba McEntire, Mickey Guyton, Terri Clark, and more.

Cline boldly bucked female conventions of the 1950s with her fashion sense, her decision to divorce, her support of fellow female artists, and her assertive ambition to get opportunities equal to those of her male NASHVILLE peers, such as the same kind of headliner billing and radio airplay, particularly after breaking free of her unfavorable contract with Four Star Records.

The series will premiere nationwide, beginning March 4 on PBS (check local listings) during Women’s History Month as part of the 31st season of THIRTEEN’s American Masters series.

Ernie Kovacs 1919-1962

 Legendary innovative television comedian, the epitaph on his grave marker reads "Nothing in Moderation." He is best remembered for creating many of the camera gags and camera techniques that are common today, influencing and inspiring such later shows as Laugh-In, Saturday Night Live, The Today Show, and television hosts like Johnny Carson and David Letterman. Headline After the Accident

During a rainstorm, he lost control of the car on a curve, and hit a telephone pole. Police found an unlit cigar just out of reach of his arm, and theorized that he lost control while trying to reach for the cigar. When Kovacs died, he owed the US Government several hundred thousand dollars in back taxes (he believed the tax system was unfair, and refused to file his taxes in protest).

William Frawley 1887-1966

William Frawley dropped dead on the street of a heart attack in 1966. Frawley, who had played neighbor 'Fred Mertz' in the classic TV show "I Love Lucy" (and 'Bub' on "My Three Sons") had been out to see a movie, and collapsed on his way back. Frawley attended a movie with a "male nurse" and on his way home he dropped dead near the Knickerbocker Hotel. His "nurse" managed to get him into the lobby of the Hotel but they were unable to resuscitate him. The corner where Frawley died was Hollywood Blvd and Ivar Avenue: See Map Here

By almost all accounts, William Frawley's off-screen personality was not all that much different from his on-screen one. A notorious misanthrope, with one brief failed marriage behind him and a fondness for the bottle, he lived in the same spare bachelor apartment for most of his years in Hollywood. Lenny Bruce (Leonard Alfred Schneider) 1925-1966

American stand-up comedian and unbelievably brilliant satirist, who invented controversal humor due to his use of so-called 'dirty words' in his nightclub comedy act. Bruce's dark humor and largely improvised shows often pushed the envelope of what was in 1960s thought of as respectable. Bruce's performances, bravery at breaking the norm, influenced many many comedians to follow.

In his later life, Bruce became addicted to heroin. In 1963 he was found guilty of illegal possession of drugs. Bruce died of an overdose on August 3, 1966, in his home located at 8825 W. Hollywood Boulevard, West Hollywood: See the Map Lenny Bruce on Find a Death 

Nick Adams Born Nicholas Adamschock to a coal-mining family in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, on July 10, 1931, Nick Adams' early life was hard-scrabble, as it was with many Depression-era families. Adams made his motion picture debut in the Warner Bros. western Strange Lady in Town (1955; with Greer Garson and Dana Andrews) and followed this up by landing a role in Mister Roberts (1955; with Henry Fonda), a strong beginning for his career.

He continued this streak in Rebel Without a Cause (1955; with James Dean) and Our Miss Brooks (1956; with Eve Arden). After a slew of movie roles and appearances on television, Adams was cast in the lead role in the ABC television western The Rebel (1959-1961). A total of 78 episodes were shot before ABC pulled the plug on the show in 1961.

Patsy Cline was born as Virginia Patterson Hensley on September 8, 1932, in Winchester, Virginia. She is my favorite woman country singer of all time. She was brassy and courageous. She didn't just open the doors for the millions of pop/country women singers to come after her, she took her cowgirl boots and kicked the tar outta those doors! No one stopped Patsy Cline...

She did pack so much living into those short years she was alive. She almost died several times due to illness and accidents. Her legendary heart and kindness lives on and of course that fabulous voice lives on for the ages.

A fantastic fansite A Tribute to Patsy Cline tells her story very well. Her shocking death in a small plane crash stunned the world and robbed us of one of the most beautiful voices in popular music.

In 2005 her album "Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits" was certified by the RIAA as Diamond, meaning it had reached sales of 10 million copies. Among her many honors, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6160 Hollywood Blvd, she was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973, in 1993 she was honored with her image on a United States postage stamp and in 1995, she was awarded posthumously a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. We got to see her Hall of Fame exhibit in Nashville and tour the studio where Owen Bradley produced those great Patsy hit songs. Also one of my most fun tours was through the Ryman Auditorium and I got to stand on the stage where Patsy once stood.

This was before they cut the circle of wood to put in the new Grand Ole Opry at Opryland. People in Nashville still talk about the very special talent that Patsy possessed.

Patsy boarded a small plane to fly home from a gig in Kansas City and the story goes something like this:

Tennessee Concerts 

The remains of four country music personalities,including three nationally known Grand Ole Opry stars, were found this morning in the scattered bits of a private plane which crashed in rugged woodlands near here.

The victims were Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and Randy Hughes,believed to be the pilot of the ill-fated aircraft. The wreckage was discovered about 6 a.m. after a night-long search by Highway Patrol, Civil Defense and local officers.Parts of the yellow plane were scattered over a 60-yard area a mile off Highway 70 about three miles west of Camden.

The wreckage was between the highway and a ranger tower, which had served as a base of operations for searchers. "The plane left Dyersburg about 6 p.m. Tuesday for a flight to Nashville. The entertainers had been in Kansas City for a benefit performance for the late Cactus Jack Call, a disc jockey. Sam Webb, whose farm is near the dense woodlands said he saw a plane circling his home about 7 p.m. and that it was "revving up its motor. . . going fast and then slow, like it was attempting to climb."

Webb said the plane left his sight and then he heard something "like it struck the top of some trees." The weather in the area at the time of the accident was termed "extremely turbulent." Investigators of the Civil Aeronautics Board were enroute to the crash scene to make a detailed probe of the wreckage in an effort to learn the cause of the smashup.
