I94 BARMAN REVIEWS JOYRIDE BY THE DETROIT SEATBELTS!

So sorry.... I am not a music reviewer naturally...I like what I like and basically all I can say is I LOVE THE SEATBELTS.

Our pal down under Craig the I94 Barman is a fabulous music writer and he really captures the SB vibe perfectly.......

JOY RIDE - The Seat Belts (Super Torque Records)  I 94 BARMAN REVIEW

What is it about Michigan rock bands releasing debut albums 30 years after they were regularly working the live circuit? The Ramrods did it a few years back and The Seatbelts, now well and truly reformed, continue in the same vein. Contemporaries of of the similarly non-prolific Sonic's Rendezvous Band, they've unleashed "Joy Ride" onto an unsuspecting public with rock and roll seemingly in its death throes. Maybe, just in the nick of time.

This is a 13-song trip down Interstate 94 that ignores the pot holes. It's straight-up rock and roll with its roots in the '50s. Greg Upshur is a rock and roll singer in the truest sense of the term - vocally he's recalling Robert Gordon. Guitarists Rick Mills and Chris Flanagan favour clean tones without gloss or sheen. If the band wore collars they'd be blue - just as it tends to be with real rockers from the Motor City and environs. Those muscle car mentions in "Age Group Rocker" are entirely appropriate.

With a name like The Seatbelts you'd expect driving songs and "Joy Ride" isn't a letdown. It also offers what passes for an anthem in "American Bandstand", the sort of aspirational, longing-for-the-West Coast/stardom rocker that bands used to produce for something called The Hit Parade. NIM CHIMPSKY PAINTER

Nim is the Chimpanzee featured in the HBO documentary film, PROJECT NIM. This video catalogs the painting of his portrait for one of his caretakers, Bob Ingersol. High quality giclee prints of the painting are available with all proceeds going to benefit endangered chimpanzees, and other apes and monkeys.

Though I personally am dead set against humans owning wild animals for "pets" or "workers" I loved the story of NIM...

THE DC SNIPER CASE OF 2002

Chief Charles Moose took the brunt of the media glare and public outrage...he deserved much better treatment than he received....

The Beltway sniper attacks were a series of coordinated shootings that took place during three weeks in October 2002 in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Ten people were killed and three other victims were critically injured in several locations throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and along Interstate 95 in Virginia.

John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo

It was widely speculated that a single sniper, initially identified as a white man with assumed military experience, was using the Capital Beltway for travel, possibly in a white van or truck. It was later learned that the rampage was perpetrated by one man, John Allen Muhammad, and one minor, Lee Boyd Malvo, driving a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan, and had apparently begun the month before with murders and robbery in Louisiana and Alabama, which had resulted in three of the deaths.

In September 2003, Muhammad was sentenced to death. One month later, Malvo was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. On November 10, 2009, Muhammad was executed by lethal injection.

Police collecting evidence from the late model Chevy Caprice the DC Snipers used. A brown glove similar to one found at one of the shooting scenes was discovered in the trunk of the car.

Other contents included a laptop computer, a set of two-way radios, a wallet with several licenses all with Muhammad’s picture, a global positioning system, and the altered rifle believed to be the weapon used in one of the shootings.

Mark Spicer is a world-renowned authority on snipers and sniping.

Mark Spicer was called in to assist the law enforcement agencies find the DC Snipers.  Here is an excerpt from his article on this topic:

In a clearly detailed and very well constructed campaign, the men attacked the general public in order to dictate actions to the Government. They set about a plan to limit public movement and hence drop localised economy profit. This in turn applies pressure on local and then higher authority, to remove this threat, as business losses dictate an angry demand by corporate entities for the law enforcement departments to protect and hence return profit.

By scaring or terrorizing the general public into not driving their cars, because getting fuel could mean getting shot, you cost the fuel industry vast amounts of money, and to compound that effect by killing an innocent bus driver you ensure that even public transport starts to grind to a halt.  Read full Article on DC Sniper Attacks

with all the subsequent loss of earnings to the economy. If this seems all a bit far fetched, just ask anyone living in the DC area during these attacks how they felt and you will get the point.

MINNIE RIPERTON'S AMAZING VOICE

Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), known professionally as Minnie Riperton, was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children: music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.

Riperton grew up on Chicago's South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago's Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters.

Riperton reached the apex of her career with her number-one hit single, "Lovin' You," on April 4, 1975. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel.

NAOMI WATTS CAPTURES PRINCESS DIANA PERFECTLY IN NEW FILM

Princess Diana was a most amazing looking woman...I seriously doubt that anyone could completely transform their body and fae into Diana's...With that said...Naomi Watts is a very sharp gal and captured her soul not her outward beauty....

"Caught in Flight" follows Diana's secret romance with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Kahn, who reportedly was "the love of her life." The pair met in 1995 at the Royal Brompton Hospital, where Diana was visiting her friend who was recovering from heart surgery. Kahn kept the affair secret until he finally opened it up to The Telegraph in 2008. Read more:

Naomi Watts is already taking on the would-be critics of her upcoming biopic “Diana,” focusing on the late Princess of Wales’ affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. “So many people are going to pounce on me for not looking enough like her, not being tall enough, not being properly British — and I am actually properly British.

I’m also Australian — but all of those negative comments were sort of floating around in the back of my head,” she tells Hamptons magazine of her decision to take the role. “And obviously the sensitivity of it, is it the right thing to do, how would the boys [Princes William and Harry] feel about it.

But they’re not boys; they’re men.” She continues, “They are aware that stories will be told about history and them included.” Watts says she “fell in love” with Diana because she was “fighting to be happy . . . I can’t really think of many people who can survive that level of fame. She was trying to get better and she was trying to move beyond those difficult times.”

LINDA RONSTADT HAS PARKINSON'S DISEASE AND CAN NO LONGER SING.....SO SAD..

Linda Ronstadt had one of the purest and most powerful voices of any singer of her era, but the pop-rock great has revealed that effects of Parkinson’s disease have left her unable to “sing a note.” She tells AARP that she was diagnosed with the illness eight months ago, although the first signs of the disease began to hit her about eight years back.

Recalling her struggle to understand why she’d lost her voice, she explains in the interview that she initially thought her issues stemmed from Lyme disease, which she contracted from a tick bite. Ronstadt also notes that she had noticed that her hands trembled for many years, but attributed that to a shoulder operation she had.

“Parkinson’s is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, ‘Oh, you have Parkinson’s disease,’ I was completely shocked,” she tells AARP. “I wouldn’t have suspected that in a million, billion years.”

In addition to being unable to sing, Linda now needs to use poles to help her walk when she’s on uneven ground, and she needs a wheelchair when she travels.

Meanwhile, the 67-year-old has written an autobiography titled Simple Dreams that will be published on September 17. The book focuses mainly on Ronstadt’s musical journey, and — according to AARP — doesn’t touch on her battle with Parkinson’s or the loss of her singing voice.

MC5: PART OF THE PROBLEM/PART OF THE SOLUTION CD

MC5 "Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution" (Belvedere - TY8 7101) LP $ 13.50
You've waded through the thousands of MC5 live recordings and outtakes, retread and re-released every Zenta New Year with different artwork, different names but the same old audio.

Are you looking for something new to quench your high-energy Detroit rock and roll thirst? Try this on for size. Rumored to be the original demo reel JOHN SINCLAIR mailed off to Elektra Records back in 1968, this collection of live material is 100% unheard since then! Hard to imagine why as these explosive renditions hold up to the best of the 5's catalog.

If ripping versions of "Borderline" and "Come Together" aren't enough, also included are THREE songs NEVER heard of before from the band. "Softly in Love" is an original that starts softly and slowly builds to a droning eruption while "What's a Matter Baby" sizzles along like John Lee Hooker's original and while "Slow Down" trumps the Beatles version tenfold. Once these are gone...they gone.

JIM BAADE'S FLINT ROCK MOVIE!

"Flint's Best Rock" is the story of one of the great FM Rock stations during the golden age of AOR,
the incomparable - WWCK, 105 FM 1971-1988. "Flint's Best Rock" is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

As a twenty-year-old Flint resident in 1980, Jim Baade would sit in the lobby of the WWCK office just looking to be a part of the action, maybe on the air, and a part of the rock and roll scene.

He first was an intern working for nothing but experience but but by the late summer of 1981 he became Jim "Bad Boy" Baade, DJing the overnight shift from 2-6 a.m. for the station that prided itself on playing "Flint's best rock" and was named the best album-oriented radio station by Billboard Magazine in 1982.

Baade is now the creative service director of Townsquare Media Group, which owns local radios stations like Cars 108 and Banana 101.5 (Cars 108, ironically, was one of the stations that helped contribute to the former rock station's downfall). In 2011 he took some classes at Mott Community College to keep his skills up to date while media went increasingly digital. One class he took was a film class--a passion of his--and when it came time for a final project, he said he never had to think about what to film.

"My goal was to get a 4.0 and tell the story of 105," he said.

FABULOUS MUSIC WRITER KEN SHIMAMOTO: STOOGES/MC5/DETROIT AND MORE...

K: Day before yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the recording of Kick Out the Jams, and the Stooges were the opening band. Any thoughts on that?

R: When they did the Kick Out the Jams record? Actually, we weren't the opening band. We didn't play, but we were certainly in the audience. I'm pretty sure we didn't play...I don't remember playing, but I know I wanted to be there, and I was there. I think The Up played.

If I remember correctly, we didn't play, 'cause it was very tense and they were very stressed out, and they wanted to keep it low-key. So they just had something very simple, not to make it a major production, I believe. We were there, though, and now I'm kind of glad that we didn't play, because they were really stressed out and some of them took acid to record...I know Wayne (Kramer) did. He got an SG that night and he usually played a Stratocaster, but he thought the SG had a little more balls. I remember him saying, "Gee, it was pretty strange playing a different guitar, not really being used to it and being on acid. " Dude, I couldn't have done it. No way.

DETROIT DIVA: ELIZA NEALS IS AMAZING.....CATCH HER LIVE SHOWS!!

I finally met the lovely Eliza Neals at the 2013 Detroit Music Awards.  David Wynans II and I were sitting with the T Money Green crowd when Eliza came in the door. She had just missed winning an award! The guys at my table  started cheering and told her to go get her award! She got it and sat right near me.

The bass players I was with just adore Eliza and told me such nice things about her and her voice. They really love her...We didn't get much time to talk in that loud party.  We finally caught up with each other this week.  She told me all about her upcoming gigs and how she got started and much more.  I really enjoyed her energy she is so positive and comes from joy... She is beautiful...xK

TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI SCREENING TIMES IN NYC

Director in person Fri Aug 23 & Sat Aug 24 for Q&As at the 7:20 pm shows and intros at the 9:30pm shows!

From veteran documentarian Siegel (The Weather Underground), THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI examines the explosive crossroadsof the legend’s life. When Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali, his conversion to Islam and refusal to serve in the Vietnam War left him banned from boxing and facing a five-year prison sentence. Vilified by the establishment but lauded by many, Ali’s choice of belief and conscience over fame and fortune resonated far beyond the boxing ring, raising issues of race, faith and identity that remain as pressing as ever.

SIDEKICK BABA LOOEY ALRIGHT!!

Baba Looey is a fictional anthropomorphic Mexican burro that appeared in The Quick Draw McGraw Show. He is deputy and best friend to Sheriff Quick Draw McGraw. He was voiced by Daws Butler.

Baba Looey is Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick. He is brown, wears a sombrero, and has a thick Mexican accent. He is often seen hanging around with Quick Draw and helps him catch bad guys.

Baba Looey is often portrayed as the more thoughtful half of the duo. At times realizing some detail about a given situation, Baba Looey tries desperately to caution Quick Draw of a trap or other danger, before Quick Draw charges headlong into the fray without listening or giving consideration to his surroundings.

The name is a parody of "Babalu", a traditional Cuban song made popular in the United States by Desi Arnaz

AUGUST 2013 FULL MOON IN AQUARIUS!

An Aquarian Full Moon brings with it the opportunity for a cosmic clearing. Whatever has been building, it comes to a head now, and if you give yourself the space and set your intention for airing out the cobwebs and starting fresh, you’ll be blown away by the results. Sage your space or burn incense. Hang wind chimes or plant a tree. Anything that encourages airflow is symbolically spot-on.

One of the scariest things about an Aquarian Full Moon is a sense that anything can happen. In fact, things may feel unsettled and chaotic as the evening approaches. However, by encouraging the flow of feelings and ideas, grounding yourself somewhere that makes you feel safe and opening yourself to whatever amazing entities this influence may bring, you set yourself up for a transformative experience. And what could be better than that? So focus your energy on what it is you’d like to release and what you’d like to foster, then let the stars take care of the rest!

PAUL MCCARTNEY IS SET TO REGAIN RIGHTS TO THE BEATLES CATALOG!

Sir Paul McCartney is set to win back the rights to The Beatles songs.

The veteran rocker, 71, lost ownership of the publishing rights to the songs he co-wrote with late bandmate John Lennon.

Sir Paul was furious when his former friend Michael Jackson outbid him to buy the Associated Television Corporation (ATV)'s back catalogue, which includes The Beatles' tracks, in 1985.

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION WAS FILMED IN OHIO: WALT MILLER PHOTOS

From Walt Milller......
This is the Ohio State Reformatory it is the place where they filmed the movie "The Shawshank Redemption"  It is said to be one of the MOST haunted places in the world. I shot these photos the last time I was there and after this week's NASCAR race at Mid Ohio.

I'm going back for an ALL ACCESS TOUR . Now I don't know if you believe in ghosts or not (I get orbs , ecto- plasm and apparitions in my photos all the time and to me they are a damn nuisance) but to others the photos should be" Something to See". P.S. are those ghosts in the photos ???

Frank Darabont’s 1994 movie The Shawshank Redemption, was filmed at Ohio State Reformatory, with its imposing nineteenth century building doubling for the fictional Shawshank Prison. The historical site has also been used in several other major motion pictures, such as Demolition Man and The Silence of the Lambs.

The Reformatory has an ongoing restoration project, which is part financed by public tours around the facilities. This has proven to be quite a tourists attraction, especially among film fans. At present the Warden’s quarters are available for viewing , as well as the completely restored central guard room along with the East and West Cell Blocks. READ MORE....

THANK YOU WALT!! CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR TOUR....
