WATSON AND CRICK DISCOVER CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF DNA

On this day Feb 28-1953, Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes.

Though DNA–short for deoxyribonucleic acid–was discovered in 1869, its crucial role in determining genetic inheritance wasn’t demonstrated until 1943. In the early 1950s, Watson and Crick were only two of many scientists working on figuring out the structure of DNA.

California chemist Linus Pauling suggested an incorrect model at the beginning of 1953, prompting Watson and Crick to try and beat Pauling at his own game. On the morning of February 28, they determined that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, or a spiral of two DNA strands, each containing a long chain of monomer nucleotides, wound around each other.

According to their findings, DNA replicated itself by separating into individual strands, each of which became the template for a new double helix. In his best-selling book, The Double Helix (1968), Watson later claimed that Crick announced the discovery by walking into the nearby Eagle Pub and blurting out that “we had found the secret of life.”

The truth wasn’t that far off, as Watson and Crick had solved a fundamental mystery of science–how it was possible for genetic instructions to be held inside organisms and passed from generation to generation. Read Full Story

Flooding and severe storms are one of the biggest worries for municipalities throughout the U.S. as they prepare for the effects of climate change. In Detroit, getting ready for changing weather patterns has prompted a creative new way to use the city’s vacant lots, most of them left from demolished homes.

Through a joint project with the University of Michigan, Wayne State, Michigan Sea Grant, city leaders in Detroit and support from residents, an innovative way to deal with storm water is flourishing.

Great Lakes Bureau shows you the “Secret Gardens” that are cropping up all over the city and changing communities for the better. This segment is part of an ongoing public media reporting initiative called “Peril and Promise,” telling the human stories and solutions of climate change. It airs February 28th on “SciTech Now” anchored by PBS’s Hari Sreenivasan on Detroit Public Television at 11pm ET.

UNSOLVED: THE MURDERS OF TUPAC SHAKUR AND THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.

DEBUTS TONIGHT AT 10 PM EST

UNSOLVED is a new limited series that draws from the experiences of Greg Kading and Russell Poole, two former LAPD Detectives who led separate investigations into the murders of iconic rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. FULL CAST

From Universal Cable Productions (UCP), Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. is a scripted true crime serial that chronicles the two major police investigations by LAPD Detective Greg Kading (Josh Duhamel) into the murders of Tupac Shakur (Marcc Rose) and Biggie Smalls (Wavyy Jonez).

Emmy Winner Anthony Hemingway (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) directed the pilot and will executive produce the series, along with Mark Taylor through their Hemingway | Taylor production company. Kyle Long (Suits) wrote the pilot and will also executive produce.

Kading, who will also serve as co-executive producer, led multiple law-enforcement task forces investigating the murders and authored the book Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations.

The series also stars Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) as Detective Russell Poole, Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) as Officer Daryn Dupree, Jamie McShane (Bloodline) as Det. Fred Miller, Brent Sexton (The Killing) as Det. Brian Tyndall, Luke James (Black Nativity) as Sean “Puffy” Combs, Aisha Hinds (Underground) as Biggie Smalls’s mother Voletta Wallace, and Letoya Luckett (Rosewood) as Suge Knight’s estranged wife Sharitha Golden.

THE GHOSTS OF JIM MORRISON THE PHANTOM OF DETROIT & THE FATES OF ROCK N ROLL!

In 1974, Capitol Records issued an unremarkable hard-rock album. Receiving a low-key release and promoted through an underground marketing campaign, the album received limited—sometimes scoffing, sometime favorable—press attention for its eerie similarities to a famed rock ‘n’ roll icon who perished under mysterious circumstances three years earlier.

Some audiophiles questioned the recordings as a lost solo album recorded prior to that iconic musician’s death; others believed the icon still alive, in hiding and recording music; others believed the album an elaborate hoax—a prefabricated band created by musicians and producers looking to profit on the celebrity of a deceased rock star.

To this day, some music journalists dismiss this phantasmal effort as a “comical” concept album: a parody of the then trendy, excessive and bloated rock operas created during the emergence of the progressive-rock epoch of the late Sixties and early Seventies.

This is the ethereal tale of that wizard of Detroit and his epic encounter with the storied Lizard King of Los Angeles. This is a historical journey of the Phantom’s time; a melodious trek through the excitements and the innovations, a musical expedition through the hypes and excesses and the successes and failures of the rock ‘n’ roll music industry and one of its mythical creations: 1974’s Phantom's Divine Comedy: Part 1.

This is the story of the man who replaced Jim Morrison in the Doors.

CLYDE THEATER ON TWITTER

HISTORY
In 1949, Clyde Quimby commissioned architect A.M. Strauss to draw up plans for the Clyde Theatre at Quimby Village in Fort Wayne, IN. Opening on April 19th, 1951, as a 1782 seat movie theatre, the Clyde was bustling with patrons as the regions premier movie house serving citizens from all over Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio.

When entrepreneur Rick Kinney purchased the building at a 2012 tax sale, a majority of the interior finishes had been stripped away by previous owners, leaving nothing but a shell of memories from a day long gone.

Today this art deco masterpiece has survived the test of time and consists of over 21,000 sq. ft. of floor space. The main performance hall, which has had all of its seats removed, will be utilized as a 2,150 capacity, general admission, multi-functional concert hall and special events center.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST COUNTRY BAND FOR YOUR EVENT

How to Choose the Best Country Band for Your Event

Are you planning an event this coming Saturday and one of the things on your list is finding a country band for performance? Different country band performers provide these services, and therefore, it is upon you as the customer to choose the right group to work with. You need a band that will deliver the best performance and wow your crowd too.

So, use the following tips to guide you in choosing the best country band for your event.

• Focus on the Event
What event are you planning for? Is it a wedding, a birthday party or even a funeral. Focusing on the event helps you make the right decision when choosing the band to perform at the event. Although some groups perform in all events, it is always good to work with a band that offers their services in specific events since it will be more comfortable coordinating with them regarding the songs to play.

• Know your Crowd
Another tip to guide you in choosing a performance band is by thoroughly understanding your crowd. If they are young, get a band that will provide energetic and vibey songs, but if they are elderly, slow performances will be the best choice since they can easily enjoy and dance to the music. Also, if the crowd is a mixture of the two, ensure the band that you chose will be able to entertain and engage all the invitees.

• The Budget
The amount of money that you have set aside to spend on hiring a band will profoundly determine the kind of group to get. This is because all bands have different charging rates depending on various factors with experience being the first one.

So, set aside enough money to find a competent and experienced group that will give a good performance, and also choose a band that will not lead you to overspend. Research on the internet since some country music bands have websites where their customers can contact them from. For example, visit greenlightbooking.com to see some of the leading country music bands that you can work with.

• The Type of Songs to Play
The kind of music that is played communicates the type of event that is going on. For example, a wedding performance is different from a funeral performance. Therefore before the due date, go through all the music that the band has set to perform in your event to see if it will blend well with the theme of the event or not.

• The Services
Choose a band that has an excellent communication and relation skills such that if you require asking them anything at any time, they will gladly assist you. They should also be flexible such that if you need them to change their songs or style of performance, they should be willing to compromise or even advice you where necessary.

Use the above great tips to help you choose the best country music band to work with. Working with a group that you can relate to makes your event run smoothly and be fun. So, to make your event stand out, choose a band that has a good experience, and that has an excellent selection of music as well. You can ask for help from a friend about the best band to hire to save time.

MANSON FAMILY MEMBER LESLIE VAN HOUTEN STAYS IN PRISON

From left, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten

Sorry a wee bit slow on this news. Governor Jerry Brown refused parole to Manson girl Leslie Van Houten this past January. There were tons of fake news stories about Van Houten being released so I verified it and thought I would share it this in case any of you missed it too. xK

NBC NEWS LOS ANGELES — The governor of California once again denied parole Friday for Leslie Van Houten, the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson who blamed herself at her parole hearing for letting him control her life.

Gov. Jerry Brown said in his decision that Van Houten still lays too much of the blame on Manson, who died two months ago at 83.

Brown acknowledged that Van Houten's youth at the time of the crime, her more than four decades as a model prisoner and her abuse at the hands of Manson make it worth considering her release.

"However," he wrote in his decision "these factors are outweighed by negative factors that demonstrate she remains unsuitable for parole."

The 68-year-old Van Houten is serving life for the murders of wealthy grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, when Van Houten was 19. They were stabbed a day after other Manson followers killed pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four other people in Los Angeles.

RON ILITCH FOUND DEAD IN TROY HOTEL

RIP Ron

Ronald Tyrus Ilitch, one of the seven adult children of Michigan business magnates Mike and Marian Ilitch, died Friday of a suspected drug overdose in a Troy hotel.

Ron Ilitch, 61, was found dead in a room at the Troy Marriott on Big Beaver, according to police. He was on probation at the time.

The Ilitch family issued a statement late Friday afternoon, saying members of the family are mourning his death.

"On behalf of my mother Marian Ilitch and our entire family, I want to express our sadness and grief at Ron’s passing," Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, said in the statement. "We’re devastated about this loss, and we ask for respect of the family’s privacy during this difficult time."

Ron Ilitch had a history of personal struggles and run-ins with the law, including a 2014 misdemeanor cocaine conviction.

State records indicate that he was on probation until May for a more recent offense. Chris Gautz, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said the MDOC was supervising him on behalf of Colorado for an operating while intoxicated offense that occurred in that state.

His supervision conditions included staying away from drugs and alcohol, and making "genuine efforts" to find employment.

He was not involved in the family's many businesses, which include Little Caesars pizza, MotorCity Casino Hotel and ownership of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings.

Troy Police Sgt. Meghan Lehman said the circumstances of the hotel death are still under investigation.

“We will be making contact with anyone else that was in the room and speaking with everyone that could have been a witness,” she said.

Family patriarch Mike Ilitch died on Feb. 10, 2017 at age 87.

My thoughts and prayers are with Denise Ilitch, her mother and family. God bless you with strength to get through this most difficult time.xoK

KIMMER PICKS HER FAVORITES FOR THE OSCARS MARCH 4 2018!

There was a wide assortment of films to see this year, way better than last year. The biggest buzz is about 3 Billboards which had really great acting but the story was too dull and tedious, we are still waiting for something to happen... The Post with Tom Hanks was good like a normal Tom movie but it wasn't spectacular.

The Darkest Hour was lacking for me due to the John Lithgow portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown Netflix Series. Lithgow owned Churchill! He was way better than Gary Oldman. Dunkirk was very well done except we already know that story.

The best film for pure fantasy entertainment was The Shape of Water. The lead actress was so good and my land I love Richard Jenkins in anything! He steals every scene! Even with a big aquaman in the bathroom he ruled! Loved Octavia Spencer trying to keep the story moving along! Any hoo, please leave comments about your favorites below the post plzz. xoK

8 BENEFITS OF PLAYING TEAM SPORTS

Recently, in a very exciting game, the Denver Nuggets went against the Milwaukee Bucks, with the Nuggets’ Center, Nikola Jovic making a record triple-double in the first half to inspire a Nuggets win. Looking back at the game, and the team’s celebration afterwards, I think it would be nice to identify the benefits of team sports to people who engage in them.

In a research conducted by the London School of Economics, it was discovered that individuals who partake in sports activities requiring more than one participant, gained more benefits, more than just the physical. Some of these benefits include exhibiting comfort in social situations, camaraderie among teammates, ease in understanding individual roles in team work, and support through challenging times.

To encourage more participation in team sports, listed below are some benefits of engaging in team sports.

1. Gain comfort in social events

Individuals who take part in sports requiring teammates do show the ease to feel comfortable in social situations. Naturally, when thrust into unfamiliar surroundings, among strangers, most people tend to withdraw, looking for means to get back to familiar surroundings.

Partaking in group games helps gradually ease new entrants into new socially uncomfortable situations. Being involved in the game, new entrants do not have time to think or analyze the social situation – their minds are completely focused on excelling in the game.

2. Nurture team spirit

People all over the world tend to respond, in the same way, to winning. All the more, when there are people with similar interests to celebrate it with. Scoring a point, a goal, making a home run, or winning the game are events that team players are going to celebrate together. These celebrations also tend foster team spirit.

3. Develop teamwork

Team sports involve identifying different roles and positioning for participants, all working toward a common objective. For example, to play baseball team members are placed in roles of the pitcher, catcher, left field, right fielder etc. Identifying the different roles, getting players to understand their roles, and overall influence of these roles in the game develops teamwork. This quality should also reflect in business and other aspects of life.

4. Exulting in being part of a group

In team sports, players on the same team are expect to put on the same clothes or jerseys, to easily identify each other. For most, these behavior tends to extend to after-game events. It is not unusual to see team members, who take part in basketball games, don the sportswear of their favorite teams i.e. the Los Angeles Lakers cuffed knit beanies, Denver Nuggets Hat or New York Knicks bracelets to signify their membership in the group.

5. Moral Boost from contribution to team accomplishment

Every team game involves members of the team acting out their role successfully, to the overall success of the team. As the individual observes the effect of his contribution to the team success, there is the boost in esteem from witnessing the addition of value, and contribution to team wins.

6. Delegating for team success

To accomplish team goals which involve different roles and skill set, each member of the team receives a duty or set of tasks that helps in the completion of the team goal.

This trait is also reenacted in team sports, as team players learn to identify their roles in each particularly game, and try dutifully to play this role. In the NFL, for example, players are delegated to mark certain team members of the opposing team. Sometimes, cash rewards are earned for a successful performance.

7. Developing friendships after the game

Team sports involve players having to work with each other to the success of the game. Player signal to each other, attempt to understand each other’s movements, positioning, and when runs are being made by teammates, to the culmination of the game.

After the games, these understanding also reflects, as teammates do tend to hang out, take part in social events together, visit each other, and do other things together.

8. Resource to better handle challenges and adversity

Like every other person, members taking part in a team sport do face challenges and difficulties at different periods. However, benefits to being part of a team include team members’ support to help the affected team member get over the challenges. Team members sometimes do provide moral support, finance, time, and contacts, to help the suffering team member.

The above benefits of team sports are by no means exhaustive. It just goes to show how much team sports can benefit the individual. The London School of Economics assert that participation in team sport activities lead to overall satisfaction with life. So, if you are planning to stay at home and run on the treadmill, you could do better by engaging in a team sport.
