"The new Johnny Bee And The Murder Hornets, "Arc Of The Sweeping Sky" Album is out now on FUNKY "D" RECORDS. Check it out. People are lovin' it!"
Johnny 'Bee' Badanjek is a Detroit Music icon. He had a Number #1 Hit at the age of 15, playing drums with Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

Max Weinberg, Springsteen's drummer, put 'Bee' on the cover of his drummer book, 'The Big Beat', and said, 'I auditioned for Bruce with 200 other drummers. I knew I had a chance when I saw Bee wasn't one of them..." Johnny Bee is a beloved talent in the Motor City having played with The Rockets, Bob Seger, Nils Lofgren, Dr. John, and many others. ALICE COOPER NEW RELEASE: DETROIT STORIES FEATURES DETROIT ROCK ICONS

Named for the city that launched the original Alice Cooper group on the road to success, “Detroit Stories” follows last year’s “Breadcrumbs” EP as a modern-day homage to the toughest and craziest Rock n Roll scene there ever was.

In 1970, fledgling producer Bob Ezrin walked into a farmhouse on the outskirts of Detroit to work with the Alice Cooper band. Abandoning flower power Los Angeles, because they were the opposite of the hippie peace and love ideal, Alice had brought his decidedly darker gang back to his birthplace to the legendary rock scene that gave birth to hard rock, garage rock, soul, funk, punk…and more.

From the amazing Johnny Bee Badanjek:

Hi Kim!

Here's a picture from the studio in Royal Oak.
L. to R. Johnny Bee Badanjek, drums. Paul Randolph, bass, Garrett Bielanic, lead guitar, Wayne Kramer, lead guitar, Producer Bob Ezrin, Alice Cooper, vocals!

“Detroit Stories” will be available on CD, CD+DVD Digipak, CD Box Set (including CD, Blu-ray, T-shirt, face mask, torchlight, and 3 stickers. 2LP Gatefold on earMUSIC

The DVD and Blu-ray will show the incredible live performance “A Paranormal Evening At The Olympia Paris” for the first time on video.

Detroit was Heavy Rock central then,” explains Alice, “You’d play the Eastown and it would be Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, the Stooges, and The Who, for $4!

The next weekend at the Grande it was MC5, Brownsville Station and Fleetwood Mac, or Savoy Brown or the Small Faces. You couldn’t be a soft-rock band or you’d get your ass kicked.”

“Los Angeles had its sound with The Doors, Love and Buffalo Springfield,” he says, “San Francisco had the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. New York had The Rascals and The Velvet Underground. But Detroit was the birthplace of angry hard rock. After not fitting in anywhere in the US (musically or image-wise) Detroit was the only place that recognized the Alice Cooper guitar-driven, hard rock sound, and our crazy stage show. Detroit was a haven for the outcasts. And when they found out I was born in East Detroit… we were home.”

6 QUESTIONS WITH ARTIST/PAINTER JOHNNY BEE BADANJEK!

In the top 2 of my favorite legendary rock drummers, Johnny Bee Badanjek (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Edgar Winter, The Rockets, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Albert King, Nils Lofgren, The Romantics) is also a very accomplished artist/painter.

"The Pipe Smokers Go Stark Raving Mad."

Bee's work has been featured at Art Prize in Grand Rapids and many other galleries. I really enjoy his work and am excited that Detroiters will get an opportunity to see Bee and his art on display this coming August 2-31 at the Detroit Artist Market.

Was thinking the other night that I really don't know much about Bee's art process and this new 6 question Q&A was the result. Thanks, BEE!!

RK: Who are some of your personal art heroes?

BEE: Art is a long history! There may be hundreds of painters I like, but I'll just name a few. Caravaggio, Eugene Delacroix, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollack,
Willem De Kooning, Joan Mitchell.

Chaålis Abbey

RK: What are your top 5 favorite tools to work with?

BEE: I work in Oil and Acrylic Paint. Prismacolor Pencils, Black Ink, and Pastels.

RK: What motivates you to paint?

BEE: I always liked drawing as a kid. And I thought that I would be an artist. But I started playing the drums and got sidetracked for fifty years before I came back to art. I think it's (art) just something you have to do. In order to be a real artist, you have to close the door and throw your bank book away. And become an Isolated stranger to the rest of the world. " Painters are like magicians of Insecurity."

RK: Do you sketch first or paint straight to canvas?

BEE: I do both. Sketching helps the mind loosen up and start ideas flowing. And other times you just start painting and see what comes out. Most of the time you end up in a different place from where you started.

RK: What artist/genre do you most identify with?

RK: I like artists from the Mid-century who came from the New York School. Abstract Expressionists! I would say my painting is like an Abstract-Figuration with squiggles and scumbling!

Transcendental

RK: What’s your favorite of your artwork

BEE: I have a few favorites. (1.) "The Boy With The Moon Rock Eyes." (2.) "A Small Utopia (Portrait Of Mary Cobra." (3.) "The Pipe Smokers Go Stark Raving Mad." (4.) "Erasing A Cobra With Moon On A String." (5.) "The Artist And His Mother."

RECORD STORE DAY IN DETROIT 2015!!

I spent all my money on vinyl records as a kid and I love seeing LPs are hot again....I began at age 10 using babysitting money to buy my first LP which was Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.. Buying records in Ann Arbor was initially done at Discount Records where Iggy Pop used to work. Then it became in vogue to go to Schoolkids records which was very close to the Michigan Theater.

My friends and I spent hours and hours going through the racks of LPs....a different time than today. Today I am song specific. I want a song and buy it. Record Store Day supports the independent store owners and we are all about helping local business. So plz go buy some vinyl today from your corner record shop!

.So in honor of today we will give you a bit on info on Record Day....

HISTORY

Record Store Day is an annual event, founded in 2007, held on the third Saturday of April each year to to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store. The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, and are only distributed to shops participating in the scheme.

JOHNNY BEE BADANJEK & AMY CHENIER: HIDDEN BY THE UNDERGROUND EXHIBIT!

Transcendental by Johnny Bee Badanjek

On Friday July 18th, 6-10pm, River’s Edge Gallery at 3024 Biddle, Wyandotte will bring two unlikely artists together: Johnny Bee Badanjek, from the world of rock, and Amy Chenier, originally from the world of sports and statement art, for the show, titled “Hidden by the Underground.”

Johnny Bee is a Detroit native. Born in Highland Park, he was attracted to the arts at a young age. “To me, melody and rhythm are akin to breathing and consuming oxygen,” says Badanjek.

Bad Conscience (Portrait of Tanya Williams) by Johnny Bee Badanjek

He originally was attracted to music, where he made quite a mark on the world of rock, but always liked the idea of being a painter. His mother worked at 6M Tech Center and the designers would give her pencils and supplies for Johnny Bee and his brother. However, for much of his life, music took first priority over art.

Baudelaire’s Melancholy Waltz by Johnny Bee Badanjek

Johnny Bee has one of the most impressive track records of any drummer. He was the original drummer for Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, recording one of the three greatest drum breaks in the history of rock, according to Rolling Stone Magazine (On "Devil With A Blue Dress").

In addition, he has toured and recorded with Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Bob Seger, Ronnie Montrose, Nils Lofgren and others, providing the backbeat for some of rock's legendary tracks. In 1972, he co-founded the Rockets.

The Neurosis of a Libertine by Johnny Bee Badanjek

Through all the musical fame, Badanjek never lost his love of painting nor his desire to pursue it seriously. “My authentic pursuit of artistic freedom brought me to drawing and painting and a deep appreciation for this encompassing art form,” he says.

His work is noted for its self-portraits, Detroit-inspired scenes, meticulous use of color, and his surrealism. His pieces are at once realistic and yet they have no shortage of imagination, as though Bee has expanded musical improv from the recording studio to the canvas.

“He’s been an exciting artist for quite some time,” says Jeremy Hansen, Gallery Director. “We are pleased to bring ‘Title Goes Here’ to the gallery.”

Persistence of Legend: I Kissed James Dean by Amy Chenier

Amy Chenier was born in Escanaba, MI but currently makes her home in Metro Detroit. She has never had a formal painting lesson, but has studied fine arts at Middle Tennessee State University and Wayne County Community College. She has received numerous national and international awards for her artwork. Her inspiration comes from various fields including philosophy, science, music, and pop culture.

Postmodern Study in Black and White by Amy Chenier

She was renowned world-wide for her breathtakingly realistic portrayals of athletes and historic sport moments and being one of the top female sports artists in the world. However, she has also painted images of Detroit as well as other famous figures like Freud, Elizabeth Taylor, and Janis Joplin.

Her art graces the collections of many prominent art collectors and athletes, including Sergei Federov and Martin LaPointe of the Detroit Red Wings, and Mike Illitch, owner of several Detroit professional sports teams and Little Caesar’s Corporation. Her work has also been on the cover of Beckett Magazine, one of the most prestigious sports magazines in the world.

Chenier has drifted from the world of sports to the world of philosophy to music and pop-culture. Her mission: to capture a moment in the face of a person. The agony of defeat, when a ball was missed, when a hit was made, all are captured on Chenier’s canvases.

Contrived though it may sound, both Badanjek and Chenier are inspired by what’s happening in Detroit: the growth, the gentrification, the revitalization. Mixed with their great love of the Motor City is a love of the philosophical and deconstruction. The show’s title is inspired by Dostoyevsky’s Notes from Underground. Other past masters that have contributed to the show’s inspiration include Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, and Claude Monet.

KIMMER'S NEW DETROIT ROCK N ROLL MAGAZINE

Happy New Year!

I have some great news to share with you. We have just launched a brand new project it is called Detroit Rock n Roll Magazine  and it is really smoking. Our Detroit RocknRoll Magazine Facebook fan page clicked over 1000 likes in 3 days and continues to build rapidly.

 Johnny Bee Badanjek

Let me give you a little info on the evolution of Retrokimmer. I decided in 2013 that I had to get back to totally enjoying what I do.. Focusing my energy on all of my favorite fascinations and obsessions.

It's true that a lot of folks see me as a "music" blogger. While it is true that I adore music, my biggest stories have always been the crime stories, mobster stories, news, biographies, obits, and girl stories (make up, nails, fashion).

 The Howling Diablos

But what should we do with all the Detroit Rock stories that come in everyday? The music deserved to have it own page... while in the past I have focused on singular rock folks like Machinegun Thompson, Scott Morgan and Deniz Tek, it occurred to me...why not create a world for all the talented rockers in and inspired by Detroit?

 Rob Tyner

The Detroit RocknRoll Magazine page is an entertainment/information page designed to support the musicians not make them anxious or gain personal notoriety! No nasty reviews, just pure love and respect for their skills.

We will highlight the legends and encourage the new players too. The musicians give their all for us and now it is time to give back.

From Kid Rock all the way to the small cover bands..they deserve our support.

Kid Rock

Detroit rock has a lot of influence from Rhythm and Blues and we definitely owe a great debt to United Sound and Motown.  The legendary groups and artists from that genre will always be honored here.

A lot of our stories will be written by the musicians/artists/photographers themselves... to me..that is a much better experience than the same old boring Q&A formats. These stories take the fan backstage in a very personal way. What better way to experience Detroit Rock n Roll.....KOTJ xK

JOHNNY BEE BADANJEK: BACKSTAGE WITH THE ROCKETS!

The crew loaded into the Fillmore at 9:00 am, right after going across the street and playing some ice hockey at The Winter Classic, nothing like a puck in the face to get you going in the morning. Then it's down to business, get the PA and lights up. 12 Noon Steve Badalament brought the drums in and set them up, then the rest of the guys started showing up for sound check.

By three o'clock it was time for the Rockets sound check. We kicked up a few songs and it sounded really good. Then it was Citizen Zero's turn. I sat out in the empty Fillmore and listened to this new young up and coming band that opened for Kid Rock over the summer at DTE. They were smokin'...

Then the Rock-A-Billy Boys showed up for their sound check...The shit kickin' Horse Cave Trio. Anybody that says they're not nervous has never been to war before! Ok I'm glad we got there early now what the f**k were we gonna do for seven hours. I know let's lay around the dressing room on folding chairs and try and get a nap in. Ha!!!

The doors open at 7:00pm and the crowd starts swarming in....Horse Cave Trio are up first and they did an ass kickin rock your shoes off set. Next up Citizen Zero with these youngsters...

And now to the head lining act everybody had been waiting for....The Rockets..were still upstairs crunched up in their folding chairs. GET UP IT'S TIME TO ROCK!!!!

Jim Edwards

They jumped into it like pros....The lights go down and the thundering intro of "Desire" begqn....Hot Damn. Without a moment's breath they launched into "Takin' It Back" now things were starting to sound like The Rockets the crowd came to see.

  Jim Edwards

Then right into "Don't Hold On" Then Jim Edwards, the singer says here's one Bee played on when he was with the band Detroit Featuring Mitch Ryder, and they jump into Lou Reed's penned song and the Detroit Band version of "Rock & Roll"

Things were grooving now. The Band played one of the new songs that was just recorded called "Ridin' The Earth".....And they were ridin' it alright. Next up a crowd favorite called "Born In Detroit."

  Jim Edwards and Joe Gaydos

Everybody was singing along. and then the band threw in another new song called "Whiskey Head" a hard drinking song about down south roadhouse ram shackle whiskey joints.

 Mike Marshall

Then The Rockets played their homage to all lost friends and a song written about Detroit Renegade J.B.Fields, who left us to early....

 Danny Taylor

And for all are fighting Men & women in the armed services who have not returned, in a Bee written song called "Lost Forever, Left For Dreaming." And then the band launched into another new song called "Detroit Woman" Talk about losing your balls....Hot Damn. These boys were rolling now.

Talk about a freight train. Then the band played a favorite of hard core Rockets fans from the old days called "Ramona" and then they jumped into "Turn Up The Radio"

Phil "Greasy" Carlisi

After this song. Greasy Carlisi put on his Bed pan guitar and played some slide guitar. Greasy always finds stuff in the alleys and makes guitars out of whatever he finds. He found it on this night. Then he threw it over to Joe Gaydos who revved up some smokin' guitar and the band launched into one of the big hits "Oh Well" which the crowd sang back loud and hard.

After a few more encore songs the boys when back to their dressing room and sat on there folding chairs. What a night. Thank you everybody who came out. Fans, Friends, and family. Much love to all. Rocket Roll!

FANTASTIC PHOTOS!

The Rockets Release Four New Songs at the Fillmore on December 28th
Detroit Fans will be treated to the first new music in 30 years

Fans who “Desire” the return of iconic Detroit band The Rockets will be thrilled to hear that the band is back after a two-year hiatus with new band members and four new tracks – their first original music release in 30 years.

“Greetings from Detroit,” a four song EP, was recorded live at Wayne State University’s Studio One, and co-produced by The Rockets and WSU’s Tom Court (who toured with The Rockets as their front of house sound mixer in the late 1970’s.) The Rockets will play the new songs live, along with other hits, on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at The Fillmore Detroit.  The new songs, available on iTunes on December 1st, 2013, exemplify Detroit's classic rock and roll sound made legendary by the MC5, The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

Presented by 106.7 The D and Live Nation, the show will feature original Rockets drummer Johnny “Bee” Badanjek, along with lead singer Jim Edwards, keyboardist Danny Taylor, and new members Joey Gaydos (lead guitar), Phil “Greasy” Carlisi (guitar) and Mike Marshall (bass).  Tickets start at $15 and are available at LiveNation.com and at the Fillmore Detroit Box Office. Doors are at 7pm, and all ages are welcome. Rising stars of the Detroit rock scene Citizen Zero and hi-octane rockabilly roots-rockers Horse Cave Trio will open the show.

The Fillmore Detroit show will be the first public appearance of the new line-up of The Rockets' seasoned musicians. Since their last appearance in 2011 with Sheryl Crow, Raconteurs, and Ronnie Dunn, “rebuilding the band and recording new material was our main goal before we played live again,” says Rocket's lead singer, Jim Edwards. “The Rocket fans will surely appreciate the raw purity of the music we have created.”

The Rockets - new band members:

Phil “Greasy” Carlisi (guitar) Sirius Trixon & The Motor City Bad Boys. Also played with legendary Stooges' members Ron and Scott Asheton (Dark Carnival) and toured extensively in the States and abroad with rockabilly musician Robert Gordon, British guitarist Chris Spedding, and legendary punk artist Jim Carroll. Carlisi has been a mainstay player in the Detroit music scene for over 35 years.

Joey Gaydos Sr (lead guitar), also a Detroit music veteran, has played with rock heavies Rob Tyner (MC5), and Cub Koda and the Points (Brownsville Station).  Gaydos built a loyal Detroit fan base with his bands, Mugsy and Weapons, and has a well-earned reputation for his showmanship and incendiary lead guitar prowess.

Mike Marshall (bass) has lent his musical virtuosity to hundreds of recording sessions and has toured with The Motor City Mutants, Torpedoes, Rob Tyner (MC5), Catfish Hodge, Johnny Bassett, Joe Weaver, Alberta Adams, and many other Detroit acts.

About The Rockets

The Rockets were founded in 1972 by former Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels members, Johnny "Bee" Badanjek and Jim McCarty. Badanjek was the driving force and primary songwriter for the Rockets when the band began its signature hard-driving sound that Detroit fans demanded.

The Rockets recorded five studio albums and produced several minor hits, including a rocking rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well.” The first album, Love Transfusion, was released in 1977. The 1979 self-titled release featured the hits, "Oh Well" and "Turn up the Radio."

With the 1980 release of “No Ballads,” Desire" was the hit song that solidified the Rockets as a viable national act and lead to an appearance on “The Midnight Special.” The next two albums were “Back Talk “(1981) and then “Rocket Roll” (1982)  "Rollin' by the Record Machine" from this release was the last hit song for the band. The final release, Live Rockets, was recorded on December 26 and 29, 1982 to a sold-out house at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in suburban Detroit.

The early Rockets band performed their last two shows at the Pine Knob amphitheater in Clarkston, Michigan, on August 28 and 29, 1983. The band splintered soon after and members went their separate ways. Badanjek, McCarty and the other members went on to other projects until the band re-emerged in 2010 at the Detroit Music Awards with new singer and front man Jim Edwards. Throughout 2010 and 2011, The Rockets continued to thrill audiences with their dynamic pure rock and roll - and the Detroit trademark sound that began decades earlier with Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.
