LOVE AND YARDLEY 1960's COSMETICS

When Mary Wells, one of advertising’s most influential people in the 1960s, was approached by a pharmaceutical manufacturer, Menley and James, to help market their new cosmetics line, she chose “Love Cosmetics” for its name to capture the essence of the culture at that time.

A brilliant marketing strategy ensued, with Mary eventually convincing M&J to choose Ali MacGraw, who was then a photographer’s assistant, to represent the brand.

You may remember the cool television commercials for Love Cosmetics with the song “Wear your love like heaven” by Donovan playing in the background.

Love's advertising budget surpassed $7 million. There was an emphasis on long-term building operation, with advertisements on television and in women's magazines.  A 4-page spread appeared in the February 1969 Harper's Bazaar. The headline theme was This is the way Love is in 1969.

The opening continued with Love today is different than it's ever been. It's freer, more natural, more honest-more out in the open. So are the girls who fall in love these days. Singer Andy Williams hosted a mid-March 1969 Andy Williams Love Special. Love Cosmetics is credited with introducing the lemon craze.

Love Cosmetics were just the coolest makeup ever made. The advertising agency promoted to the youth market and was not your "mother's" makeup. Love Cosmetics (1969 - 1980) was introduced by Menley & James Laboratories on March 1, 1969.

By the summer of 1970 the company was marketing and promoting Fresh Lemon bath products and Soft Eyes items to beautify the eyes. Advertising was coordinated by Wells, Rich, Greene advertising agency (1967 - 1990), a company founded by Mary Wells Lawrence.

The ideal customer on which marketing-focused was a young woman, 20 to 25. She might be a young businesswoman, co-ed, or young married. She was likely a trendsetter and a heavy cosmetics user.

Love Cosmetics' first line of items included Love's Fresh Lemon Cleanser, Lovelids eyeshadow, and Eau De Love. The latter came in a 6 oz. bottle. In all, there were eleven products, and with the inclusion of shades, they numbered forty-three.

Love shines was the fun stick to contour and color your eyes, face, all your other kissable little curves and hollows. Lipsticks were called Lovesticks. The remainder of the line was Love's Basic Moisture, Love's A Little Color, Love's Transparent Powder, Love's A Little Cover, Love's Liner, Love's Mascara, and Lovelids.

The latter was eyeshadow with a container in the shape of a plastic eyeball.  I had all this line and the eyeballs were so cool but you had to use your finger to apply it. That became an unhealthy procedure so eyeshadows with applicators became the standard.

Yardley of London is the world's oldest cosmetics company. Established in 1770, Yardley was a major producer of soap and perfumery by the beginning of the 20th century. By 1910, it moved to London's Bond Street, and in 1921 Yardley received its first Royal Warrant. Today, Yardley holds two Royal Warrants.

Yardley London is famous as a purveyor of luxury fragrances and soaps. House of Yardley was born in England in the mid-seventeenth century, during the reign of king Charles I of England.

An entrepreneurial young man named Jonathan Yardley obtained a royal warrant for the provision of all the soap to City of London.

The means by which this warrant was obtained are lost to history, however we might suppose it involved payment to the monarch of a sizeable, and no doubt welcome, sum.

This first incarnation of Yardley was lost, as was so much of the old city, in the Great Fire of London of 1666; save for one detail – that lavender should be used to perfume the soaps.

STEVE MARTIN TEAMS WITH EDIE BRICKELL

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell

From Showbiz411: Yes, there was a time when Steve and Eydie referred to the fun, fab married singing duo of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. But I can tell you exclusively that there’s a NEW Steve and Edie on the scene: comedic actor and musician Steve Martin and singer songwriter Edie Brickell, aka Mrs. Paul Simon. No, the two are not getting together romantically.

But Martin and Brickell are recording an album together, combining Martin’s banjo picking and his touring band with Brickell’s famed warbling and songwriting. Brickell, of course, had a few hits including “What I Am”in 1988 before marrying Paul Simon in 1992 and having three children.

Since then, Brickell has had a spotty career, making albums with Simon’s eldest son Harper Simon (“The Heavy Circles”) and with musician Steve Gadd in the Gaddabouts. Peter Asher is producing the new album with Steve Martin; Simon and Brickell were among the guests at Asher’s final show Saturday night at Feinstein’s at the Regency.

Martin and his band will perform in July at the Starkey Hearing Foundation’s annual all star gala in St. Paul, Minnesota. This new grouping a sure thing for a booking on “Saturday Night Live” this fall, which will be a refreshing change of pace.

What? You didn’t know about Edie Brickell?

How George Lucas Made a company worth 4 billion without investors...

An entrepreneur by the name of George Lucas just cashed out of the company he founded and built: Lucasfilm. Unlike many entrepreneurs who build companies these days, George Lucas didn't raise any VC money. And that means he gets to keep the whole check Disney wrote for his company, which was for a not-inconsequential $4 billion.

How did George Lucas build a company worth $4 billion without any outside investors?

Here are the key points:

ROCK GUYS SEND THEIR SUPPORT TO EAST COAST SANDY VICTIMS

by: Matthew Wilkening

As Hurricane Sandy leaves a path of destruction across the East Coast of North America, classic rockers have taken to Twitter to share their support with those affected by the storm, and to urge their fans to remain safe as flooding and high winds continue to affect much of America and Canada.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler sent his thoughts and prayers to all his followers in harm’s way, as did Motley Crue members Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx. Sammy Hagar, whose Atlantic City Beach Bar and Grill sits directly in the storm’s path, reminds his fans that buildings can be repaired and urges them to focus on personal safety.

Below are a collection of Sandy-related classic rock tweets. We hope everyone made it through the storm as safely as possible and urge everyone to remain cautious as its effects continue to be revealed.

MY THOUGHTS & PRAYERS GO OUT TO THOSE ON THE EAST COAST…. STAY SAFE FROM SUPERSTORM SANDY…… WE’LL SEE U SOON….. NIGHT! XOX

FILE UNDER WHO CARES? MCCARTNEY SAYS ONO DIDN'T CAUSE BEATLE BREAKUP

Chad Childers

For many years, there has been much speculation that John Lennon‘s wife, Yoko Ono, influenced the Beatles breakup, but Paul McCartney says that it’s not true and that the band was splitting regardless of Ono.

Classic Rock magazine reports that McCartney shares his feelings on the subject in a new interview with Sir David Frost that will be broadcast on Al Jazeera next month to celebrate his 70th birthday.

McCartney says, “When Yoko came along, part of her attraction was her avant-garde side, her view of things.

She showed him another way to be, which was very attractive to him. So it was time for John to leave. He was definitely going to go. She certainly didn’t break the group up — the group was breaking up.”

The vocalist credits Ono with Lennon’s inspiring single ‘Imagine,’ adding, “I don’t think he would have done that without Yoko, so I don’t think you can blame her for anything.” As for the band’s split, McCartney says, “It wasn’t a bad thing … [We left] a neat body of work.”

Of course Sir Paul has more records to sell....

Speaking of bodies of work, McCartney is increasingly adding to his. The singer has his ‘Live Kisses‘ DVD, which features his take on several standards, arriving on Nov. 13. He’s also covered ‘The Christmas Song‘ for Starbucks latest compilation, ‘Holidays Rule,’ which is in outlets tomorrow.

Plus, there’s word that McCartney may have two albums currently in the works.

DETROIT'S MC5 RECORDED KICK OUT THE JAMS LIVE LP 44 YRS AGO

MC5
Rob Tyner – lead vocals
Wayne Kramer - lead guitar
Fred "Sonic" Smith – rhythm and lead guitar
Michael Davis – bass guitar, backing vocals
Dennis Thompson – drums
Brother J. C. Crawford

The LP peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the title track peaking at No. 82 in the Hot 100. Although the album received an unfavorable review in Rolling Stone magazine upon its release, it has gone on to be considered an important forerunner to punk rock music, and in 2003 was ranked number 294 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.

While "Ramblin' Rose" and "Motor City is Burning" open with inflammatory rhetoric, it was the opening line to the title track that stirred up controversy. Vocalist Rob Tyner shouted, "And right now... right now... right now it's time to... kick out the jams, Motherfuckers!" before the opening riffs.

Elektra Records executives were offended by the line and had preferred to edit it out of the album (replacing the offending words with "brothers and sisters"), while the band and manager John Sinclair adamantly opposed this.

PopMatters reviewer Adam Williams wrote, "For my money, Kick out the Jams is one of the greatest records ever pressed. It is a magnificent time portal into the past, a fleeting glimpse of a band that actually had the balls to walk it like they talked it" and that "no live recording has captured the primal elements of rock more than the MC5's inaugural effort."

And with that...it's time to....

HURRICAN SANDY BATTERED THE EAST COAST:

The so-called "Frankenstorm" fueled by HURRICANE SANDY is hammering the highly populated EAST COAST TODAY, with MSNBC reporting that "History-making Hurricane SANDY may bring 11-foot wall of water, two feet of snow,: and that "NOAA's hurricane research division warns the hurricane's surge and wave 'destruction potential' at 5.8 on a 0-to-6 scale." Radio started preparing as early as late last week to make sure their audiences would be informed.

If the storm remains on its current track, SANDY's center is expected to be near the JERSEY SHORE close to ATLANTIC CITY on MONDAY night, according to THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER.

THE MISTRESS OF ALL EVIL: MALEFICENT

Maleficent is a fictional character and the main antagonist in Walt Disney's 1959 film Sleeping Beauty. She is the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil" who, after not being invited to the baby's christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die" before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday. The character is Disney's adaptation of the wicked fairy godmother from the original French fairy tale.

Maleficent is often viewed as the most powerful and sinister of the Disney Villains, frequently acting as their leader in many crossovers, and her scenes in the climax of the film are among the darkest and most intense produced by Disney.

In Ultimate Disney's top 30 Disney Villains countdown, Maleficent ranked #1. She also plays a major role in the Kingdom Hearts series, as a recurring villain.

The character was animated by Marc Davis. The wicked fairy was aptly named "Maleficent" (an adjective which means "doing evil or harm"). In determining Maleficent's design, standard depictions of witches and hags were dismissed as Mattinson's opted for an elegant, sinister, green-skinned beauty centered around the appearance of flames, ultimately crowning the villain with a black two pointed headdress, often called an atora."

According to Mattinson, Maleficent "was designed like a giant vampire bat to create a feeling of menace." In the end the individual character of the three good fairies and the elegant villain proved to be among the film's strongest points.

She was voiced by Eleanor Audley, who had previously performed Lady Tremaine, the wicked stepmother with gray hair in Cinderella. Audley also provided some live-action recording for both of these characters, to inspire the animators. Dancer Jane Fowler also performed some live-action reference for Maleficent.

Animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, in their book The Disney Villain, describe animating Audley's voice as "a difficult assignment but a thrilling one, working to that voice track with so much innuendo mixed in with the fierce power."

Maleficent's dragon form was animated by Eric Cleworth, who said that the dragon was modeled on a rattlesnake, with "powerful muscles moving a bulky body over the rocky terrain." Sound effects man Jim Macdonald searched for the sound of a dragon's fiery breath by asking the U.S. Army to send him some training films on flame throwing. These films provided just the right sound for him.
