THE RONETTES' RONNIE SPECTOR: MASCARA AND MADNESS

Undoubtedly the most popular Retro girl singer of all time is Ronnie Spector...If I post a photo of Ronnie I get a bazillion hits on Facebook...but I find that most readers don't really know that much about Ronnie.. Her background, her relationship with Keith Richards, the battle for her to free herself from Phil Spector...there is much that should find it's way into a good film not a made for TV schlocky movie.  Here is a little bit on Ronnie....xK

She was born Veronica Yvette Bennett in New York City. From an early age, she took to singing, encouraged by her large, close family. The other members of the Ronettes, her sister, Estelle Bennett (1941-2009), and cousin, Nedra Talley, were also encouraged to sing by their family.

The Ronettes were a multiracial group. The Bennetts' mother was African-American and Cherokee, and their father was Irish; their cousin, Nedra Talley, is African-American and Puerto Rican.

Ronnie was married to Phil Spector from 1968 to 1974, and took his name professionally; they adopted three children, including a set of twins.

Ronnie with Phil Spector

By her account, Phil kept Ronnie a near-prisoner and limited her opportunities to pursue her musical ambitions. In her autobiography, she said that he would force her to watch the film Citizen Kane to remind her she would be nothing without him.

Spector's domineering attitude led to the dissolution of their marriage. Ronnie was forbidden to speak to the Rolling Stones or tour with the Beatles because Phil Spector feared that she would be unfaithful.

Ronnie claims Spector showed her a gold coffin with a glass top in his basement, promising to kill and display her if she left him. During Spector's reclusive period in the late 1960s, he reportedly kept his wife locked inside their mansion.

She claimed he also hid her shoes to dissuade her from walking outside, and kept the house dark because he did not want anyone to see his balding head. Ronnie stated in her autobiography that she walked out of the house through the closed and locked rear sliding glass door, shoeless, shattering the glass as she left, and feet all cut up by the time she got to the gate. She never returned.

Ronnie Spector filed for divorce in 1972. She wrote a book about her experiences, and said years later: "I can only say that when I left in the early 1970s, I knew that if I didn't leave at that time, I was going to die there." She and Spector separated in 1973 and divorced one year later.

In August 2011, former lovers Keith Richards and Ronnie Spector still have a thing for each other, says Spector, but their relationship now is strictly platonic.

Ronnettes and Keith

Spector, who played a pivotal role in Rolling Stones history, told the Hartford Courant that she and Richards still innocently flirt with each other: "I was just with him like three or four months ago. He has a basement with a studio down there, so he'd get me in the corner and say, 'Ronnie, you know I'm — ' And I said, 'Hey! Your wife is upstairs. What are we going to do?' So we still carry that torch, but no hugging or kissing or stuff like that."

Rolling Stones guitarist Richards and singer Spector had a passionate romance when his group (the Rolling Stones) and her group (the Ronettes) toured together in 1964. Spector, who was unmarried at the time and going by her maiden name (Ronnie Bennett), was one of Keef's’ first loves, he said in his autobiography "Life."

THE NATIONAL R&B MUSIC SOCIETY INC.

The Temptations formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1960 as The Elgins (not to be confused with another Motown group with the same name), the Temptations have always featured at least five male vocalists/dancers. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history.

The Ronettes first entered the US singles chart with 'Be My Baby' the girl group's only top 10 hit. Lead singer, Veronica Bennett who became Ronnie Spector, took producer and ex-husband Phil Spector to court in the late 1990s for unpaid royalties.

ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME 2010 REPORT

Sunday, March 21 at 5P/4C
Rock Hall Photos HERE

Last night's RHF Stooges clip HERE

Well we saw the guys inducted and Iggy said two things that mattered. He said and I quote " Ron was Cool and the MC5 were cool" He said it all in the one statement. It is upsetting that the 5 have not been inducted but they are ok about it. I am not ok with it but they are happy for Iggy and all of the Stooges personnel. Iggy spoke very eloquently and choked up at the end of his speak for the successful second life of the Stooges.

MC5 NEED TO BE INDUCTED!

These guys really should have their place along side all the other greats in rock history and the 5 were responsible for thousands of bands to begin their own bands including the Stooges. There that is all I'll say on that topic for tonight. Except Iggy earned points from me because all day tv commercials were running for the show Iggy screaming Kick Out the Jams Motherfu**er Yes IGGY the MC5 and Ron are COOL

Favorite moment of the show for me was JIMMY CLIFF.

Jimmy Cliff

When Jimmy Cliff was 14 years old, a teenager approached him in a Kingston bar and asked Cliff to listen to his music.

That stranger turned out to be Bob Marley, who went on to become a reggae legend and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Tonight, reggae superstar Cliff joined him in the Rock Hall of Fame in a ceremony to be held in New York City.

Fast Forward to the late 90's (I think) I was invited by my friend Robin and promoter friend Bart Loeb to see Jimmy live at the Majestic Theater in Detroit. Bart produced the show and it was packed.

They had a little white reggae group from Ann Arbor open for Jimmy and though they were great... their set ended and big booming drums along with steel drums started up and Jimmy's voice blasted out on the mic from backstage YOU WANT REGGAE? WE YOU GOT IT NOW.

I made my way to the stage front and stood transfixed for his entire set. So close I could have grabbed his foot and yanked him off the stage. It was oneof my most memorable moments of my life in music.

Tonight he was just as young and clear as if it were 1972. tonight he sang Many Rivers to Cross and the crowd didn't breath while he was singing either.

My next favorite moments were by various artists sings ongs from the Brill Building songwriters and as Carole King also mentioned that other Brill Building nearby

Ronnie Spector sang I Can Hear Music which I loved totally as she is the QUEEN to me she is the 60's to me!

Homorable mentions: Singing the songwriter's famous songs

Eric Burdon We gotta Get Outta theis Place
Peter Wolf of Jay Geils sang Money Honey (Really good)
Chris Isaak another of my hunky favorites sang Don't Be Cruel
Fifi Godson sing River Deep Moutnain High Tina Turner version (never hear of her but she was great!

The musicians sang the show off to Shake Rattle and Roll

BYE BYE : PHIL SPECTOR CONVICTED

The Ronettes with Spector

Rock music producer Phil Spector was convicted Monday of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Lana Clarkson at his mansion six years ago, a verdict that will send him to prison for at least 18 years barring a successful appeal.

A Superior Court jury returned the verdict after about 30 hours of deliberations. The jury had the option of choosing the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, but did not do so.

As Phil awaits sentencing for murder I 'd like to remember the best thing that ever happened to Phil:

He went seriously downhill after the divorce and his mania went uncontrolled for decades. He was a mentally deranged guy with way too much money. Bye Bye Phil...

Phil Spector invented the 'Wall of Sound', a system to overdub scores of musicians to create a roar of sound, which changed music history.

See the Phil Spector Jukebox HERE

Born in the Bronx, Spector moved, with his mother, to LA after his father committed suicide. In school, Spector learned the guitar, and started to write songs with Marshall Leib and Annette Bard. They called themselves 'The Teddy Bears', and had a top ten hit in the US and UK with 'To Know Him Is To Love Him'(I hate that song ), the title taken from the inscription on Spector’s father's grave. They seemed destined for fame, then Spector disagreed with the record company, and the band disintegrated.

In the early 60's Spector began producing "girl groups". His most famous girl group was the Ronettes. Phil married lead singer Ronnie see her website HERERonnie was the ultimate 1960's rock n roll diva... wasn't she just marvelous?

Ronnie was married to Phil for 4 years he ended up ripping off ALL the royalties to HER band. Jerk! Well he is finally getting his pay back for all the rotten karma he has put out there.

The Ronettes were also professional singers and dancers at New York's Peppermint Lounge. There they were discovered by legendary disc jockey "Murray the K" (Murray Kaufman), who promptly hired them as dancers for his Brooklyn Fox Theater rock and roll revues.

Beginning in 1963, Ronnie Spector-as lead singer of the ultimate girl group, The Ronettes-recorded a long string of classic pop hits produced by Spector: like the Grammy Award-winning “Walking in the Rain,”, “Do I Love You,” “Baby I Love You,” “The Best Part of Breaking Up,” “I Can Hear Music,” and the international Number One smash “Be My Baby.” These records are among the best-loved and most-emulated recordings in the history of rock and roll.

The Fantastic Ronettes!
