WILLIAM SHATNER TEAMS UP WITH GUITAR LEGEND RICHIE BLACKMORE!
Los Angeles, CA – Hot on the heels of the superb joint effort from William Shatner and Canned Heat comes to a brand-new alliance that is sure to have music fans cheering. Former Rainbow and Deep Purple axeman and one of the most revered guitarists of the classic rock era, Ritchie Blackmore, joins Mr. Shatner for a deeply felt, heart-rending take on the blues classic “The Thrill Is Gone.”
The song, perhaps best known by the smash-hit version that B.B. King recorded in 1970, was actually written the same year that the young Mr. Shatner made his film debut in 1951. Since then it has been interpreted numerous times, but King’s version was the first to unite the soul-piercing lyrics with absolutely awe-inspiring guitar licks to create the definitive version of the song, and no doubt inspired the Shatner/Blackmore version.
As a special treat, Blackmore’s wife and longtime collaborator in Blackmore’s Night, Candice Night, contributes background vocals to add even more pathos to this inspired track.
Mr. Shatner had this to say about the song, “'The Thrill is Gone' is the title of the song, but the thrill is there with Ritchie Blackmore and his great guitar!”
Blackmore and Night return the praise saying, “We would like to express our gratitude for being able to appear on the recording with William Shatner. It is always an honor to work with him. He is a man of many legendary performances.”

Stream the single: https://orcd.co/shirley_king_elvin_bishop
The song is a highlight on King’s incredible new album, Blues For A King, which crosses musical genres from blues to rock to soul and back again.
Even next to such high wattage guests as Joe Louis Walker, Robben Ford, Junior Wells, Pat Travers & Elvin Bishop, King absolutely shines as she performs a spectacular version of the blues classics “Gallows Pole” and “Hoodoo Blues Man” as well as the soul hit “Johnny Porter” (originally by The Temptations) plus two songs by British rock band Traffic, “Can’t Find My Way Home” and “Feelin’ Alright?.”
The album closes with a powerful version of Etta James’s unforgettable “At Last,” which signals that, at long last, Shirley King is finally getting the attention and recognition she so richly deserves.

About Shirley:
Born and raised in Memphis, Shirley began singing in the church choir at age nine. When she was thirteen, she met another music legend – Etta James. Young Shirley was so impressed by Etta’s performance that she made Etta her musical role model. Ruth Brown and the late Mahalia Jackson also greatly influenced the fledgling singer.
Shirley says, “I grew up around the stage watching my dad become famous, but I never imagined I’d become a blues singer too.” Ms. King came late to the blues, first trying it on in 1990. Within six months, she was a regular performer at famed Chicago blues club Kingston Mines. Two years later she saw the release of her first CD, Jump Through My Keyhole.
In 1999, Shirley released her highly acclaimed blues album, Daughter of the Blues, which featured her soulful, bluesy versions of classics like “Wang Dang Doodle,” “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Every Day I Have the Blues” and, fittingly, “The Thrill is Gone.” Once her father caught her act he lent his full support to Shirley’s efforts at carrying on the blues.
She admits that having a legendary father helped open some doors for her, but it was her talent, charisma, and high-energy stage presence, along with her big, beautiful singing voice, that put her on the musical map. From traditional blues to gospel to funky R&B to smooth soul, Shirley defies genre and her singing and stage antics never fail to excite her growing number of fans worldwide.
Shirley also believes in giving back. She has worked with kids as an artist-in-residence with the highly acclaimed Urban Gateways Arts in the Schools Program at Chicago Public Schools and continues to expose school children to the history blues has played in American culture.
All in all, Shirley King continues to be the quintessential ambassador for the blues - and that’s something that would certainly make her daddy proud.

KIM LENZ: ROCKABILLY GODDESS RELEASES NEW LP
Rockabilly goddess Kim Lenz has released her new album Slowly Speeding via Blue Star Records. Combining atmospheric production with gothic Americana themes and a renewed emphasis on lyricism, Slowly Speeding represents a compelling new direction for the LA-based songwriter and bandleader. Slowly Speeding is available for purchase here.
Rolling Stone Country recently spotlighted the title track "Slowly Speeding," calling it "a smoldering torch song that’s built as much for the lounge as the juke joint." Lenz was subsequently featured as Lenz was featured as one of their "10 New Country Artists You Need to Know." The video for "Slowly Speeding" first premiered with Taste of Country who writes, "The L.A.-based singer-songwriter practically invents a whole new genre with her new song..." Lenz followed this with the haunting, animated video for her song "Pine Me", which premiered on Billboard.
Watch: Kim Lenz - "Pine Me"
Lenz is a songwriter, performer, bandleader, engineer and producer who pores over every nuance of her music to ensure maximum potency. The ten songs on Slowly Speeding brim with growling vocals, clever turns of phrase and heightened musicianship that services both the songs and the emotional intent behind them.
Lenz released her debut album in 1998 as Kim Lenz & the Jaguars, via Hightone Records. Heralded as the “Flame-haired keeper of the rockabilly flame” by Allmusic, Lenz reached the highest heights of the 90’s rockabilly revival.
At the same time, she established her own distinctive voice as an artist who inhabited the musical and aesthetic traditions of a classic era, even as she subverted them. At the same time, she populated her band with top-notch players like bassist Jake Erwin (Hot Club of Cowtown) and the late guitarist Nick Curran (Ronnie Dawson, Fabulous Thunderbirds).
For Slowly Speeding, Lenz pulled the most essential elements of the past forward into the present and gave her own voice to it. Lenz's sonic vision for the project was to combine her favorite tones from her most-treasured records, regardless of genre or era, and co-producer DH Phillips was the perfect partner in crime.
They looked to early blues, classic country, and old-time gospel harmonies. ”The idea was to try to use all the ingredients that made up rock & roll, but shift around the time frames,” she offers. “I started out in the '90s making traditional rockabilly music,” she continues. “But in my journey to understand how rockabilly and rock & roll came into being, I found blues, rhythm & blues, gospel, Western swing, and country music.”
Lenz will bring her trademark style on the road, with select dates across the U.S. Full tour dates are at www.kimlenz.com.

JOSS STONE'S SOUL SESSIONS VOLUME 1, VINYL REISSUE
Mercury Prize-nominated 2003 album, co-produced by soul singer Betty Wright and S-Curves founder Steve Greenberg, includes Carla Thomas, Aretha Frankin, Isley Brothers and White Stripes covers
LOS ANGELES, May 26, 2017— Joscelyn Eve Stoker, better-known as Joss Stone, was born in Dover, Kent, England, and grew up listening to singers like Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin, emulating their gritty, soulful style on her groundbreaking 2003 debut album, The Soul Sessions, Volume 1, which proved a worldwide sensation and will now be released on vinyl by UMe on May 26.
Stone appeared on several U.K. TV talent shows, but was discovered by British producers Andy Dean and Ben Wolfe, who in turn convinced S-Curve Records founder and veteran U.S. label executive Steve Greenberg to audition Stone. Greenberg enlisted veteran Miami soul singer Betty Wright to work on what became The Soul Sessions album, with local musicians such as Benny Latimore, Timmy Thomas and Little Beaver as well as contemporaries Angie Stone and The Roots.
The idea behind the album was for Stone to record more obscure soul tracks by the likes of Aretha Franklin (“All the King’s Horses”), Carla Thomas (“I’ve Fallen in Love with You”), the Isley Brothers (“For the Love of You, Pts. 1 & 2”). Willy “Sugar Billy” Garner (“Super Duper Love [Are You Diggin’ On Me] Pt 1”), Laura Lee (“Dirty Man”), Bettye Swann (“Victim of a Foolish Heart”) and the Soul Brothers Six (“Some Kind of Wonderful”) as well as offbeat choices such as Waylon Jennings (Harlan Howard’s “The Chokin’ Kind”) and even Woodstock hero John Sebastian (“I Had a Dream”). The first single was Stone’s cover of the White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl,” transposed to “Fell in Love with a Boy,” and produced by the Roots’ Questlove. That single reached the Top 20 of the U.K. Singles chart, as did the follow-up her version of Sugar Billy’s “Super Duper Love.”
The Soul Sessions, Pt. 1 entered the U.K. Albums chart at #89, and eventually peaked at #4 in its fifth week, with the British Phonographic Society certifying it triple platinum. It has since sold more than a million copies in the U.K. In the U.S., The Soul Sessions peaked in the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, and within six months, was certified gold.
The album is now nearing platinum in this country. The album was also an international hit throughout Europe, where it hit the Top 5 in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal, Top 10 in Belgium and Italy, Top 12 in Sweden and Top 15 in Switzerland as well as #4 on the European Top 100 albums. It was awarded a Platinum Europe Award by IFPI for sales in excess of one million across the Continent. The Soul Sessions earned platinum in both Australia and New Zealand, and as of July 2012, had sold five million worldwide.
The critics were mostly effusive, with Rolling Stone’s Jon Caramanica enthusing, “Stone shines on this impressive covers set… she chooses songs wisely. AllMusic’s Thom Jurek said Stone “has unique phrasing and a huge voice that accents, dips and slips never overworking a song or trying to bring attention to itself via hollow acrobatics.”
The A.V. Club’s Keith Phipps said, “Sessions established Stone as a formidable interpreter.” The album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a MOBO Award for Best Album. Stone released the sequel to the album, The Soul Sessions, Vol 2 in 2012.

GUITARIST SCOTT HENDERSON: NEW RELEASE VIBE STATION DROPS MAY 1 2015
Guitar Virtuoso Scott Henderson To Release Instrumental Album For Guitar Trio “Vibe Station” on May 1, 2015!
“Henderson's guitar soars high, sometimes tender. Sophisticated, technical and soulful, his playing bristles with intelligence, never crossing the line into excess.”
Los Angeles, CA – Guitar virtuoso Scott Henderson has finished his new album “Vibe Station”, the most ambitious project of his career! The highly anticipated instrumental album for guitar trio will be released on May 1, 2015.
Says Scott, “I'm really excited about this record because our trio has been touring a lot and that energy came through on all the performances. The music is still blues-based, but also has a lot of harmonic content. The big change is no vocals, which challenged me as a guitarist to write material which can be played in a vocal way on the guitar, while incorporating my own chord-melody style. I think fans will enjoy the scope of this record because it has elements of blues, rock, jazz and funk. There's something for everyone here.”
Scott also said that the majority of the songs are layered with multi guitar tracks, utilizing many different guitars, pedals, amps and speaker combinations, making it the most textural and versatile sounding album he's ever done. Travis Carlton on bass and Alan Hertz on drums make this project and live show very much groove-based.
Says Scott, “I need to see people moving in their seats. I'm not interested on putting on an intellectual show for musicians only. I don't believe I need to dumb down the music to appeal to people who aren't musicians, because when Travis and Alan play together, the groove is going to attack you whether you're a musician or not”.
Scott Henderson's impressive work over the years as co-leader of the group TRIBAL TECH, leader of his own ground breaking trio, and sideman to some of the best jazz artists of their generation, including the great Joe Zawinul, has elevated him to the front ranks of both Jazz and Blues. Besides being a world class player and premier composer, Scott's trademark is his beautiful tone and striking ability to blend Blues, Rock, Funk, and Jazz, creating a soulful and unique voice on the guitar.
Expect to hear Scott on the top of his game on his April 2015 Europe tour.

King has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop, and jump into a unique sound. In his words, "When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille."

TOM JONES RETRO FABULOUS SINGER!
Tom's vocals were considered to be too raucous, and he moved like Elvis. Not things that were expected of a Valleys boy in the early 60s!
I have known that it wasn't "cool" for my age group to love Tom Jones but I always have. Proudly I own his music to this day and no one sings or moves like Tom.
I remember being an Army kid in 1969 I babysat for an Army couple that drove for hours to see his show. The wife was extremely excited and had her blonde hair done in a large up-do and to this day I see those same women in the audience with the same hairstyles! Even at the Elvis Fest last weekend Where Irv Cass did a terrific job as "Tom" those same women were there!
Thomas Jones Woodward
Tom Jones real name Thomas Jones Woodward began singing at an early age. It wasn't unusual in the valleys towns of South Wales. But the boy was clearly something special: he'd regularly sing at family gatherings, weddings and his mother's Women's Guild meetings.
He also sang in his school choir, although it's said he was once told off for drowning out the rest of them as they sang Men Of Harlech in school assembly.
By the late 1950s Tom had become entranced by the new rock 'n' roll sounds coming from the radio. In his teens he was becoming something of a tearaway, missing school, drinking and chasing girls.
At 16 Tom left school. He married Linda the following year, one month before their son Mark was born. At the time, Tom was working nights in a paper mill, a situation which paid fairly well but was getting in the way of his singing. Something had to give. He gave up working at the mill.
In 1963 he became the front man for Tommy Scott and the Senators, a local beat group whose former singer Tommy Redman preferred singing ballads. Scott later became a welder in Treforest.
Jones recorded his first single, Chills And Fever, for Decca in late 1964. The single didn't chart, but the follow-up, It's Not Unusual, was an instant smash hit. Its orchestrated arrangement coupled with Jones energetic delivery proved infectious, and the song reached number one in the UK and the top 10 in America. And so a star was born.
A string of hits followed, including Once Upon A Time, With These Hands and Burt Bacharach's classic What's New Pussycat.
In 1965 Tom sang the theme tune to the James Bond film Thunderball, which starred Sean Connery. He also met Elvis that year, starting a friendship that would endure until Presley's death in 1977.
In 1966, Tom released his most successful single ever: Green, Green Grass Of Home was to become Tom's second chart topper. He first heard the song on a Jerry Lee Lewis album, Country Songs For City Folks, but the song was interpreted by many to refer to Jones' native Wales.
The following year, 1967, Tom performed for the first time in Las Vegas, at The Flamingo. In future years he would return time and time again. Indeed, Tom's time in Las Vegas saw him elevated to superstar status in America, a position he enjoys to this day.
One of Tom's best-loved singles was released in 1968. Delilah was a dark tale of murder and infidelity, but people were entranced by the melody and Jones' unforgettable delivery. It became a big hit.
Tom remains married to Linda Soon that he married at 16 years. Mary Wilson of the Supremes said in her book she lived with Jones in Hollywood back in the 70's but no reply was ever mentioned by the Jones camp.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: SHAKEY JAKE MAN OF THE WORLD
Being born and raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan it was our habit as teens to hitch rides to hang out in dowtown Ann Arbor and hang around State and Liberty on the campus of the University of Michigan. The years were about 1968-1978 when I spent the most time in that area. Shopping at Middle Earth and the Bead Bag.
We all knew Shakey Jake. Jake was a bluesman from Little Rock Arkansas. We assumed he was homeless as he carried most of his possessions around with him. But he had rooms all over town and then living in section 8 housing. He carried his old painted acoustic guitar which was out of tune and missing strings. Ocasionally you'd see Jake and Herb David had tuned it and replaced his strings. That made Jake a happy man.
Jake played for spare change on street corners and at times he played bars like the Del Rio and the Old Town. I saw him play one time at the Rio with the Blue Front Persuaders. (wonder where they are now)
Both photos: Jim Rees
As you can see Jake did at least one record!
From the Ann Arbor News
Shakey Jake Woods was a star in Ann Arbor, almost from the time he arrived here 34 years ago. Wearing his trademark three-piece suit, hat and dark sunglasses, the man known simply as "Shakey Jake" could be seen playing his guitar on the street downtown for as long as many can remember. And when he stopped inside local stores or restaurants for breakfast or lunch, it was if a movie-star had walked in.
"Customers would treat him as a celebrity," said Kathi Macker, a manager of Expresso Royale on Main Street.
Woods, perhaps the city's most recognizable resident, died Sunday evening, said Felicia Epps, a property manager for the Ann Arbor Housing Commission. He was 82 years old, according to a friend and the date of birth he gave police in 2001 after he reported being punched in the stomach.
Though he played his guitar with vigor, it was often out of tune. Sometimes it had only one or two strings. But he had a larger-than-life persona.
Among his claims: That he had been around the world dozens of times but never in an airplane. That he had a dozen bodyguards who watched out for him constantly but couldn't be seen by other people. That he slept only two hours a night. And that he was born on Halloween and was 104 years old.
What's true is that he sold tapes, T-shirts and bumper stickers ("I brake for Jake") that made their way around the country. Occasionally, he put a bucket out on the street when he played his guitar. But he lived on Social Security and relied on the kindness of many downtown merchants. It was enough to cover the cost of renting rooms all over the city, and later to live in public housing.
"He was so harmless," said Chera Tramontin, whose mother, Karen Piehutkoski, opened Kilwin's Chocolate Shoppe in 1983 on Liberty Street. Woods was one of the first to visit the new shop.
"It wasn't that he wanted the handout," said Tramontin. "He wanted to go out and work, and he thought he was working. He was out playing his music."
Shakey Jake died on September 16, 2007, at the age of 82.
RIP bluesman

RETROKIMMER'S BLUES AND NEWS ON SATURDAY
Though Kimmer tends to generally hang around the retro eras of music she definitely has a thing for the Blues. Especially on Saturdays.... No work and relaxing with Albert King..YES
Just met the owner of the very cool MOTORCITY MUSIC FACTORY the charming Tom Lubinski. The Motor City Music Factory is a members only (you can join) music venue housed within the industrial expanses of TWH metals complex in Detroit, Michigan. Machinegun and I had big fun hanging out with the friends at there two weeks ago. This factory is a huge venue for music and video production.
I went there to scope out the facility for future Machinegun Thompson Projects and to see how cool this place might be. I had heard the week before that it was fantastic out there and it really is a terrific place to film, rehearse, and throw a giant 100,000 square foot party! The kind of events Kimmer likes to throw for sure!
The Dead City Prophets are featured in this fantastic promo video at Tom's Music Factory. Watch this video... This weekend I am working with legendary Detroit bass player Ron Cooke, incredible Lead vocalist Mark Childress on the new blog for their band Dead City Prophets. Not quite ready for launch yet but should be up and flying by Sunday night. See my new DCP blog HERE
We ran into our friend Richard Peardon the fantastic graphic artist that does all those cool Circus Boy posters and much more. Here is a poster Richard did that I love.
Just love the Retro feel of Richard's fantastic graphics. His work made me go track down this artist and meet him at the Scott Morgan and the Rationals Cd Release concert a few weeks ago.
Machinegun and I ran into Mike the lead singer of Circus boy at Christopher Coppola's PAH Nation Motown festival last month at Madonna University. Machinegun was a featured panelist on the Creativity Panel.
Circus Boy is playing during the People's Art Festival as well as 79 other bands.
Richard is very busy working with Detroit Wheels Drummer/Artist Johnny Bee Badanjek in the area summer Art Festivals. Bee will be displaying his work at the People's Art Festival happening next weekend.
