THE FACE OF FREEDOM: NELSON MANDELA DIED AT 95

Nelson Mandela 1918-2013

Nelson Mandela, the beloved first black president of South Africa who spent 27 years in prison for fighting the injustice of apartheid, has died. He was 95.

 THE FACE OF FREEDOM

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was plagued by respiratory illness through the years since his release in 1990 from imprisonment, during which he had suffered a severe case of tuberculosis.

JOHANNESBURG — Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president and an enduring icon of the struggle against racial oppression, died on Thursday at 8:50 PM..

Mr. Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of treason by the white minority government, only to forge a peaceful end to white rule by negotiating with his captors after his release in 1990.

He led the African National Congress, long a banned liberation movement, to a resounding electoral victory in 1994, the first fully democratic election in the country’s history.

THE VERY HIP FELIX THE CAT!

Felix the Cat is one amazing cartoon...Felix is still hip with kids all the way to seniors. The Cat has never lost his cool....

Felix the Cat is a funny animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. The anthropomorphic black cat with his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences.

Felix's origins remain disputed. Australian cartoonist/film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan, owner of the Felix character, claimed during his lifetime to be it's creator. American animator Otto Messmer, Sullivan's lead animator, has been credited as such.

What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character enjoyed success and popularity in 1920s popular culture. Aside from the animated shorts, Felix starred in a comic strip (drawn by Sullivan, Messmer and later Joe Oliolo) beginning in 1923, and his image soon adorned merchandise such as ceramics, toys and postcards.

Felix cartoons began airing on American TV in 1953. Joe Oriolo introduced a redesigned, "long-legged" Felix, added new characters, and gave Felix a "Magic Bag of Tricks" that could assume an infinite variety of shapes at Felix's behest. The cat has since starred in other television programs and in two feature films. As of the 2010s, Felix is featured on a variety of merchandise from clothing to toys. Oriolo's son, Don Oriolo, later assumed creative control of Felix. Read More on WIKI

Interdisciplinary in nature, RRAS is geared toward middle and high school students but includes resources for learning at all levels. Launched in Fall 2013, the website offers new lesson plans and teaching resources on a monthly basis.

Educators are encouraged to create user accounts, which will allow them to receive notifications when new content is made available. This is where the story will unfold!

FOUNDATION & TEAM

Steven Van Zandt founded the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation in response to a drop-out crisis he saw crippling American education. Believing that student engagement is a significant facet of the crisis, he conceived a curriculum based around popular music, a subject that connects with student interest and passion.

Importantly, what he then created with his team is a curriculum that is not restricted to music departments alone, a truly interdisciplinary curriculum. Now endorsed by the National Council for the Social Studies and the National Association for Music Education, with partners including Scholastic Inc., Reelin' in the Years, ABC News, Rock's Backpages, New York University's Steinhardt School, and the Grammy Museum, Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation is launching Rock and Roll: An American Story.

I set trends or may be considered a "fashionista" and I initiate exciting opportunities to get attention, conquer fears, enhance reputation or image, or to express or inspire liberation-often by extreme measures.
