American Mafia History: Paul “Big Paulie” Vario was born on July 9, 1914 and lived in Brooklyn New York. He had four brothers, Vito, Salvatore, Thomas, and Leonard. As a youngster, Vario was in trouble with law enforcement often. In 1925 at the age of 12 he was sent away for seven months for truancy. He had several more convictions through his lifetime.
As a young man Vario joined the Lucchese crime family and worked his way up the ranks taking part in violent crimes such as extortion, hijacking, bookmaking, and numbers games to name a few. He and his brothers also owned several legitimate businesses including a flower shop, cab stand (Euclid Avenue Cab Co) and restaurant (Presto Pizzeria). Vario’s brother, Vito “Tuddy” Vario ran the pizzeria and the cab stand where most their business was conducted.
Paul Vario was born in New York City, where he later became a member of the Lucchese crime family. In 1925, at age eleven, Vario was sentenced to seven months in juvenile detention for truancy.
Nicknamed "Paulie," Vario stood six foot three and weighed 250 pounds. He was deceptively strong despite his girth, and would intimidate underlings and enemies just by his sheer size. During his adult years, Vario was arrested for loan-sharking, burglary, tax evasion, bribery, bookmaking, contempt of court and assault.[2]
Vario allegedly had a very violent temper. One night Vario took his wife, Phyllis, out to dinner. While they were sitting at the table, the maitre d' accidentally poured wine on Phyllis' dress, then tried to dry it with a dirty rag. An enraged Vario hit the maitre d' twice and chased him to the kitchen. The maitre d' and several waiters with knives and heavy pans blocked the door. Later that evening, Vario sent two carloads of men armed with baseball bats and pipes to assault the waiters after the restaurant closed.[citation needed]
Vario's associate Henry Hill claimed that Vario severely beat a female bar server at her apartment with a baseball bat. The woman had allegedly informed Phyllis that she and Vario were having an affair.
In the early 1970s, Vario was "membership director" for Colombo crime family boss Joe Colombo's Italian-American Civil Rights League. However, he rescinded his membership and withdrew all support when it became apparent that the relentless accusations Colombo was making against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. government about racism and anti-Italian discrimination were attracting attention, which could easily divert from Colombo and his supporters' politics and into their criminal behavior. LONDON — A princess is born.Prince William’s wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, “was safely delivered of a daughter” Saturday morning, less than three hours of checking into central London’s St. Mary’s Hospital, royal officials said.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their baby daughter Princess Charlotte make their first appearance outside the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London. The couple left for Kensington Palace soon after.
Kensington Palace said the baby was born at 8:34 a.m. London time and weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces.
The announcement was greeted by cheers outside the hospital, where die-hard royal fans dressed in patriotic Union Jack gear have been camping out on the sidewalk, eagerly awaiting news. Delighted chants of “Princess! Princess!” sounded outside the hospital’s private Lindo Wing.
A town crier in elaborate costume shouted out the news at the hospital’s door, clanging his bell to welcome the new royal. “May our princess be long-lived, happy and glorious,” said Tony Appleton, reading from a scroll in a booming voice. The palace said Kate, 33, and her infant were doing well, and that Prince William was present for the birth.

Cinetopia Festival, recently named as the best Detroit area film festival, today announced an expanded schedule of films and events taking place June 5-14 in Detroit and Ann Arbor. Spanning ten days this year (up from five days in 2014),
Cinetopia brings more 70 films to the Detroit/Ann Arbor area – representing the best feature-length dramas, comedies, and documentaries from the world’s best festivals, including Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, SXSW and Tribeca.

In addition to the impressive array of films, curated specifically for Cinetopia by a dedicated team of programmers led by Michigan Theater CEO and Cinetopia founder Russ Collins and Elliot Wilhelm, Director of the Detroit Film Theatre series at the DIA, a majority of the screenings will include special post-film events, including presentations, discussion panels, and Q&A sessions with directors, writers, and stars of the films being presented.
The festival will feature more than 100 screenings of 72 films, in an expanded array of venues throughout Detroit and Ann Arbor. Besides the Detroit Film Theatre, additional Detroit venues include the Arab American National Museum, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, College for Creative Studies, Cinema Detroit, The Redford Theatre, Senate Theater, and The Maple Theater. In addition to the historic Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor venues include The State Theater and UM Modern Language Building.
Cinetopia will open on Friday, June 5th with a free outdoor screening on the DIA’s North Lawn of the stunning new animated film Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. The event is being presented in partnership with Midtown Detroit, Inc. and the film is being presented at Cinetopia as part of the Arab Film Festival (see below).
The Prophet, by Lebanese author Kahlil Gibran, is among the most popular volumes of poetry ever written, having been published in over 40 languages since its publication in 1923. The book's timeless verses have been given new form in this anthology film, directed by some of the world's foremost animators, among them Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) and Bill Plympton (Idiots and Angels).
With a score by Gabriel Yared that includes contributions from Glen Hansard, and Yo-Yo Ma, the film is also a musical collaboration, a richly spiritual experience worthy of Gibran's lyrical book. This festive kickoff evening will begin at dusk (7pm) on the DIA North Lawn with a live jazz interpretation of Holst’s The Planets by the Mike Jellick Ensemble, followed by the screening at sundown (9:30pm).

The Arab American National Museum’s Arab Film Festival, offering eight fascinating new titles from one of the most currently prolific and creative group of filmmakers on the planet, including the opening night film Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet.
All acclaimed on the international festival circuit, these films by both Arab World and Arab American artists are, with few exceptions, unlikely to reach American commercial theaters. Genres include drama, comedy and documentary, in both short-form and feature lengths. Each of these films is subtitled in English, making them accessible to all.
The University of Michigan’s Orson Welles Centennial Symposium, presented by the University’s Department of Screen Arts & Culture and the UM Libraries, celebrates the richness of the libraries’ Welles archival holdings and brings together donors, scholars, students and media makers who have used the archives to give us a better understanding of the man and the artist. In honor of his 100th birthday, Cinetopia will screen several Welles films, some are rarely seen, and host post-film discussions in conjunction with the symposium.
Detroit Voices, a short film competition which invites Michigan filmmakers to share their community’s point of view via film. The winners of the competition will be announced during Cinetopia and their films will be screened as part of the festival. The brainchild of local filmmaker Sultan Sharrief and launched in 2014, Detroit Voices has helped to recognize several talented artists with both screen time and cash awards. In addition to the film screenings and discussions, the festival includes several free outdoor film screenings in addition to the opening night festivities at the DIA. On June 11, Ann Arbor will host an outdoor screening of the summer film classic Jaws on Maynard at Liberty Street, free and open to the public.
The Cinema Circus series of free outdoor screenings continues this year with eight events taking place from May 30 to August 22, bringing films to communities across Detroit and extending the Cinetopia experience.
Cinetopia passes are on sale now at cinetopiafestival.org and include Festival Passes (offering unlimited film screenings, priority admission, opening night parties and other hospitality events), Movie Passes (unlimited film screenings and priority admission) and, for the first time, Student Passes for those with valid student identification (unlimited film screenings).

I never knew until just now that the actor who played "Tuddy" in Goodfellas was Framk Dileo the high progile manager of Michael Jackson during MJ's peak recording years. The cast of Goodfellas remembered him at the recent Tribeca Film Festival..
When the cast of “GoodFellas” reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival, one cast member, Michael Jackson’s late manager Frank DiLeo, was fondly remembered behind the scenes.
DiLeo played “Tuddy” in the movie, but off-screen his real nickname was “Tookie” — a moniker given to him as a baby by the chief of police in Pittsburgh.
Pals recalled that after guiding Jackson through the “Thriller” and “Bad” years, DiLeo moved to a California ranch he dubbed “the Tookarosa,” where all guests received robes with the estate’s name.
Joe Pesci said at the time of 1990’s “GoodFellas,” “I remember reading the script and telling Marty [Scorsese], ‘Geez, you gotta give Frank the part of Tuddy. He’s perfect.” DiLeo died in 2011.
