CINETOPIA FILM FESTIVAL EXPANDS TO 5 DAYS JUNE 4-8 2014!

Ann Arbor, Mich. - After a successful expanded run in Detroit this past June, the Michigan Theater and Detroit Film Theatre announced yesterday that the Cinetopia International Film Festival will be even bigger in 2014. The festival will grow to five days (June 4-8), add more Detroit venues, create new special programs, and bring in additional filmmakers for pre- and post-film events. The festival is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees this year.

Cinetopia 2014 will feature more than 100 screenings of 45+ films, split evenly between venues in Detroit and Ann Arbor. Besides the Detroit Film Theatre, additional Detroit venues include the College for Creative Studies, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Cinema Detroit, and Michigan Science Center. In addition to the Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor venues include the State Theater, the University of Michigan Modern Languages Building, and a rooftop theater.

The Cinetopia Film Festival is able to increase its scope thanks to a $50,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge, which funds innovative projects that engage and enrich Detroit. The support of presenting sponsors AT&T Michigan, Toyota, and MASCO Corporation Foundation is also critical to this expansion.

Cinetopia tickets will go on sale on Friday, May 9. Individual tickets are $12 for the general public and $9 for DIA, DFT, Wright Museum, and Michigan Theater members. Ticket booklets and festival passes will also be available.

LONG ISLAND TEENAGER ACCEPTED BY ALL IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS!

He soared to the top, thanks to his “helicopter parents.”

The Long Island teenager who got accepted into all eight Ivy League colleges was whipped into shape by his strict mom and dad — who hovered nearby, encouraging him to push himself, he told The Post.

“They were helicopter parents. They monitored everything. They said, ‘You have a mind, and you can do it. Always do your best,’ ” said Kwasi Enin, 17, a senior at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach. FULL STORY HERE

2 OF SWORDS: BLIND INSTINCT

The Two of Swords card suggests that my power today lies in opinion or blind instinct. 'I just know it.' My perceptions are sharp, balanced and reasonable and guide my decision or support a position free from momentary distraction or impulse. I honor my authentic self when I choose to protect emotional vulnerabilities without compromising virtue, reputation, or principles. I practice self control but I know that denial can't hide truth forever. 'Once bitten, twice shy.' I am empowered by the status quo and my virtue is justification.

SHOULD THE LOVE LOCKS BE CUT DOWN?

AUTHOR MATTHEW BLAKE

Throughout history, couples have left drawings on the floor, written words on walls and carved initials into trees to express their love for one another. Leaving a padlock or ‘love lock’ on a structure such as a bridge or fence has become another popular way of doing the same thing, but with a modern twist – a custom some believe may have originated in ancient China.

Couples would leave their locks, decorated with initials or names, in a place that they felt was significant to them. If this place was a bridge, they would secure the lock and throw the key into the water below, signifying their eternal bond together as a couple.

The custom of fixing a padlock to a bridge as a symbol of a couple’s love has now spread worldwide.

Recently the gesture has gained popularity and become so widespread that the issue has provoked debate amongst council authorities, local communities and tourists across the globe. Having love locks on iconic bridges, fences and lamp posts can bring a sense of culture to an area and a large collection of love locks arguably makes an intriguing visitor attraction, potentially boosting revenue from tourists. Some however are worried about damage to historical structures due to the weight of all these locks, and ask whether it’s worth having them there at all.

We look at some of the places in which love locks have appeared – and how locals and authorities have reacted to them. FULL STORY HERE
