NATHANIEL RATELIFF AND THE NIGHT SWEATS ROCK FARGO SEASON 3

Nathaniel David Rateliff is an American singer and songwriter based in Denver, whose influences are described as folk, Americana and vintage rhythm & blues. He reminded me of MC5 legendary front man Rob Tyner. Nataniel has a very unique and commanding stage presence and such a gospel style soul shaking sound.

Dennis (Machinegun) Thompson and I were home watching Fargo S3 Ep1 The Law of Vacant Places  the other night and we heard the closing song S.O.B by  Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. Man did I freak out over this tune!!

I instantly jumped for you tube to find out who was singing this! Luckily Dennis saw the name in the credits to ease the search. Seems I am always tracking down new music from my favorite TV series these days.

Nathaniel Rateliff Austin City Limits (Son Of A Bitch)

I went into the office to see this big band! Watched the video twice and then called Dennis in to see it. Being THE legendary drummer of the MC5, Dennis Thompson has a VERY selective taste in music... very few bands pass his quality control . 😎
BUY IT!!

We both loved the horns! It is so great to see young bands branching out from the tired 2 guitars, bass and drums stage style. BIG Sound is fabulous! This band is on STAX RECORDS too. How cool is that?

As we watched this video I saw a slow smile spread across Dennis' face then go into full grin at the chorus. We both loved Nathaniel. This band passed the Machinegun test!

There just aren't enough adjectives to describe this 38 year old Missouri raised gospel/rock musician/performer. And wouldn't you know it? I read his Wiki page and Nate is a DRUMMER! Yes indeed and Dennis knew that instantly.

Loved this tune too!

JOIN THE WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION OF MUSIC!

A Two-Time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Legendary Composer and Pianist, a Jazz Virtuoso, a “Nashville” Star and Musician, Noted Composers/Percussionists, a Hollywood Actress-Turned-Rocker and a Grammy Award-Winning Singer/Songwriter Among Ambassadors

4,000+ Live, Free Outdoor Music-Making Events to be Held in More than 60 U.S. Cities on June 21

June 8, 2017 – Make Music Day, the annual global celebration of music occurring each June 21 and featuring over 4,000 free, outdoor concerts, music lessons and jam sessions in over 60 U.S. cities, today announced its lineup of artist ambassadors. The all-day musical celebration on the summer solstice brings people of all styles, ages and skill levels together to make music.

Make Music Day ambassadors include (in alphabetical order) Carmine and Vinny Appice, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Peter Cincotti, Charles Esten (Nashville on CMT/Hulu), Philip Glass, Daniel Ho, Mandy Jiroux, Glenn Kotche (Wilco), Lenka, Christian McBride, Ian Mellencamp, Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless), Graham Nash, OK Go, Lee Oskar, Alex Skolnick, Tokyo Police Club, Us the Duo, Suzanne Vega, Vintage Trouble and Bernie Williams (former New York Yankees centerfielder and Latin Grammy nominated artist), along with many others to be found across the global celebration.

“What I love about Make Music Day is that it brings music out to the public with no barriers or boundaries,” said Christian McBride. “On June 21, you never know what you might hear – a jazz trio on a train platform, a funk band in a prison, or a string quartet on a porch. They’re celebrating every kind of music and bringing people together.”

“By uniting music makers from every walk of life, it reminds us that music is bigger than any one culture, viewpoint or experience and that we can revel in being humbled by it,” said Dave Monk of Tokyo Police Club.

“Why do we love Make Music Day?” asked OK Go. “Because for one day of the year music gets to run free in the streets in all of its most insane and mundane permutations.”

Us the Duo added that “Although music is constantly happening all around us, Make Music Day celebrates it in one glorious day of sound-making in the streets of a city or town near you.”

Charles Esten noted: “You think you're someone who ‘can't make music?’ I think you might just be someone who hasn't explored all the ways that you could. Spend a couple hours in a music store. Try instrument after instrument. Don't be self-conscious. Just have fun. You're not playing for anybody else. You're playing for yourself. So keep trying.”

The artist ambassadors will be sharing their love of music, and music making, with their fans and the public in the days leading up to Make Music Day.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Every kind of musician – from bucket drummers to opera singers – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens and other public spaces to share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers.

Make Music Day national highlights include Sousapaloozas that bring together hundreds of brass and wind musicians to play the music of John Philip Sousa, Street Studios that feature DJs and producers bringing gear and engaging passersby in the spontaneous, collaborative production of original music on the street, and more than 175 Mass Appeal events that bring together musicians of all levels and ages to make music in large, single-instrument groups led by experienced facilitators.

Cities hosting major celebrations include New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Fullerton, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Portland (OR), St. Louis, San Jose, Seattle and the entire states of Vermont and Rhode Island, with smaller festivities taking place in other communities nationwide.

Make Music Day, which began in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, has since grown to more than 750 cities cross 120 countries, and is presented in the U.S. by The NAMM Foundation and coordinated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance.

All Make Music Day events are free and open to the public. For the full schedule of events in each city and to register to perform or host musical events, please visit makemusicday.org.

AN INCOMPLETE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF PINBALL MACHINES

An Incomplete History and Evolution of Pinball Machines

This article would be lying, if it claimed to be able to write a complete history and evolution of pinball machines in such a short space online. Although the reader will be asked to suspend their belief and recognize what level of content is trying to be truly achieved herein. The pinball machine is an important step in the world of gaming, high technology, and entertainment. Let alone it maybe one of the great innovations of the 20th century.

In the most basic sense, pinball machines are coin-operated arcade style games with players scoring points by shooting metal orbs (or pinballs) onto an incline raised playing field. The game involves hitting special targeted areas while players avoid losing their pinballs at the far end of the inclined pathways. Yet the modern version of the pinball machine has much older roots in history.

Improvements In Bagatelle

A British inventor named Montegue Redgrave applied for US Patent #115,357 for the above mentioned upgrade to the game Bagatelle in 1871. Redgrave too the table and ball game and patented changes that would pave the way for pinball machines. His patent called for a coiled spring, a plunger, making the large bagatelle balls into marbles, adding a playing field with an incline, and making the entire game smaller. All these would be features bagatelle would have in common with modern pinball machines.

The Earliest Countertop Machines

The first pinball machines became popular games during the Depression era in America. They were a cheap form of entertainment and did not have flippers yet, instead built in plungers were used to shoot ball into the playing field. Players tried to aim at holes that scored various values of points. Even this early on, players would bang and shove the machines to influence game play. Games names like 'Bingo', 'Baffle Ball', and 'Bally Hoo' were big in 1931, before the onset of games attempting to beat the human influences of banging machines by hand.

First Mechanical Tilt Machines

These games would fight human tilting, but it would still not be until 1936 the term pinball became an official word. In 1933 the first attempted tile mechanism was built into a game called 'Brokers' Tip', although the real debut would be in a game called
'Advance' invented by Harry Williams in 1934. The tilt mechanism would be a directly aimed answer to the problematic game players who shook and lifted machines to get high scores. During this same transition came the first battery operated machines in 1933, followed by the first redesigned electric powered machines in 1934. Innovator Henry Williams can also be credited for these creative additions allowing for new sounds, lights, music, a back lighted glass framing, and many new features. Hence the pinball machine was officially born.

Scoreboards, Flippers, and Bumpers

Backtracking a bit, the first pinball bumper was invented officially in 1937 in the game 'Bally Hoo'. The flipper came from a man named Harry Mabs and debuts in 1947 with a game called 'Humpty Dumpty'. The game utilized six flippers, or three on either side. Introducing flippers added new levels of skill and control for players of pinball machines. At this same time period, pinball was banned in many parts of the country, the opposition believing it toe be a form of gambling. It would be three decades until all pinball bans would be revoked. During that time, a game called 'Spot Bowler' added the final key piece of hardware to form the modern pinball machine, the scoreboard. Now pinball machines would enter their new incarnations as a historic game of devotion for players in the 20th century.

Three Decades of Innovations

The pinball machines of the 1950s introduced important innovations, such as scoreboard shows from behind the glass and the first two player game machines. This brought forth the full player experience offered but not yet available with the innovations of the 1940s. Then in the 1960s Steve Kordek invented the drop target, multi-ball playing games, and he is also credited with a repositioned layout for the flipper mechanisms at the bottom of the pinball field. These would be release with his games 'Vagabond' in 1962 and 'Beat the Clock' in 1963. Additionally the first digital scoring pinball machines arrived with the release of 'Rally Girl' in 1966.

Sold State Electronic Pinball Machines

The Who's rock opera 'Tommy' had given pinball a worldwide infamous image, this lead to movie themed games like 'Wizard' in 1975. Such contracts brought bigger money into the pinball machine market and the expansion of gaming spread faster than ever. Today pinball designers give their games themes, narratives, and structure that is purely due to the change in marketing. In 1975 the first solid-state electronic pinball machine also was released, the 'Spirit of 76' by Micro. The modern customer base for all future pinball marketing was about to be born, and into the new generation would go the spoils.

Dot-Matrix Displays and Video Screens

The first prototype solid state pinball machine was actually made by a company called Williams Electronics, although that is not what they would be known for in the long run. Their great innovations would be to innovate on an idea from 1991 or taking the dot-matrix displays that some companies were experimenting with and created the early programming for the first pinball video screens. Williams Electronics made the whole industry shake in 1998, when they released the new Pinball 2000 series of pinball machines. Only two games were ever produced by Williams Electronics, 'Revenge From Mars' and 'Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace'. The market wasn't big enough for the company and they shut down operations in 1999.

Not With a Bang, But a Whimper

As of that moment, versions of pinball machines began being sold which were completely software based. Oddly no other companies managed to survive in the market after all the history and evolution pinball machines had endured. So after 1999, the entire home and worldwide manufacturing of pinball machines would be left to the unwitting hands of a much smaller and lesser known company called Stern Pinball. And with that an era in human gaming history and the evolution of pinball technology ends, for practical purposes.

That is the short version of the pinball machines story.

COMMODORES ALBUM ON LP, PLUS SPECIAL BLUE VINYL EDITION, JUNE 16

The 1977 release, now with long versions on vinyl for the first time, includes such hits as “Brick House” and “Easy,” and has been sampled by many artists

Los Angeles, CA – May 31, 2017 – Commodores, the 1977 self-titled fifth studio album by the pop-funk-soul band known as the “Black Beatles,” will get a vinyl LP release from UMe, along with a special edition in blue vinyl for fans and collectors, June 16. Both releases were cut from the original, un-faded masters, delivering on vinyl for the first time longer versions of seven of the nine tracks. (See timings below for comparison.)

The original album spent eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Soul albums chart and was the group’s first crossover record, peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200, thanks to a pair of very different hit singles: the up-tempo “Brick House” and the sensuous Lionel Richie ballad, “Easy.”

“Easy,” the first single released from the album, reached #1 on the Billboard R&B (known then as the Hot Soul Singles) chart and #4 on the Hot 100, and paved the way for Richie’s pop emergence. The song was an international hit, reaching the Top 10 in the U.K. and New Zealand and the Top 20 in Ireland and Canada.

“Brick House,” featuring the distinctive funky vocals of drummer Walter “Clyde” Orange and Ronald LaPread’s heavy-bottom bass line, which formed the foundation of the song, went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. A group composition, its lyrics – celebrating a woman’s looks and her confidence in them – were written by Shirley Hanna-King, wife of the band’s trumpet player William “WAK” King, who initially claimed authorship before he admitted the truth.

Also featured on the LP is “Zoom,” a collaboration between Richie and LaPread. Although never officially released as a single, “Zoom” became one of the Commodores’, and Richie’s, best-known tunes. In the U.K., in fact, the LP was titled Zoom.

The Commodores were originally formed from two groups, the Mystics and the Jays, in 1968 at Tuskegee Institute, where the band members were students, signing with Motown in November, 1972 after opening for The Jackson 5 on tour. The group made a brief appearance in the 1978 film, Thank God It’s Friday, performing “Too Hot Ta Trot.”

Songs from Commodores have enjoyed a long life in the guise of covers and samples. Fergie sampled “Zoom” on her song “All That I Got (The Make-Up Song),” from her album The Dutchess. It has also been sampled by Snoop Dogg on “Pimpin’ Aint EZ,” a 2009 collaboration with R. Kelly from his album Malice N’ Wonderland); E-40 (from its 1998 album The Element of Surprise), Tricky (“Tricky Kid” from his 1996 album, Pre-Millennium Tension) and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (“Everytime” from their 2010 album, Uni5: The World’s Enemy).

Faith No More recorded a cover of “Easy” during the studio sessions for its 1992 album Angel Dust, following its repeated performances during their live shows, and it became an international hit in several countries, including Australia, where it went to #1, Norway, the U.K., Finland, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland and Netherlands. The song was sampled by rap group Geto Boys for “Six Feet Deep” from their 1993 album, Til Death Do Us Part and by Cam’ron for his song, “Hey Ma.”

“Brick House” was the sampled foundation for the title cut of Foxy Brown’s hit LP, Ill Na Na, while the original was featured in the 1995 film Houseguest, the 1999 film Muppets From Space and the 2002 feature Undercover Brother. Prince’s ex-wife Mayte released a rap version of the song, “House of Brick,” on NPG Records in 1995, with Prince himself singing the chorus and verses.

That same year, Dread Zeppelin covered the song as “Brick House (of the Holy)” on its Led Zeppelin-esque album No Quarter Pounder, while Rob Zombie, collaborating with Lionel Richie and Trina, did a version on his House of 1000 Corpses soundtrack in 2003.
