Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales.

LEVON HELM MEMORIAL BOULEVARD!

WEST HURLEY, N.Y. — State Route 375 was dedicated as Levon Helm Memorial Boulevard on Friday by admirers who said the singer and drummer always would stick by his friends and work to help underdogs beat the odds.

An afternoon ceremony near the intersection of Routes 375 and 28 drew about 125 people, including state Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, who sponsored the legislation allowing the road designation. A sign bearing the words “Levon Helm Memorial Boulevard” was unveiled during the event.

The road renaming applies to the entire 3-mile length of Route 375, which runs from Route 28 in West Hurley to Route 212 in Woodstock and passes near the home where Helm lived on Plochmann Lane in Woodstock. He lived there until his death at age 71 in April 2012 after a battle with throat cancer.

Helm rose to fame in the late 1960s as a member of The Band, which was based for a time in a West Saugerties house known as Big Pink, and later drew acclaim for the Saturday night Midnight Ramble concerts he hosted in the barn/studio on his Plochmann Lane property. The Rambles often had big-name musical guests and allowed Helm to extend his fan base through many generations. Continued...

My best bud for many many years came to town tonight. Robin Comer and I met at the Super Sale company back in the day and have been together ever since. Throughout many fun trips to the Caribbean, many lost boyfriends, a wedding, a baby and a divorce... Robin has been right beside me through it all.

Robin managed the advertising and media buys for the Super Sale and I was the Show Manager. We were so young to be so responsible... it was an incredible time for us both. We had so many adventures together.

The first trip we went on was to Chicago, IL. We were so wrapped up in talking to each other I almost ran my car over a ramp onto the O'Hare Airport tarmack 45 feet below! OMG we freaked out for a minute then picked up the conversation right back where we left it to scream! LOL I moved away first after I got married. I saw Robin often but I always was so sad when she drove away. Just like I felt tonight when hugged me goodbye.

Robin is younger than me and was the little sister I always wanted. Here is Lesley with her Aunt Robin. It was Robin that was in the delivery room with me when Lesley was born in Feb 1992. It was Robin that helped me pack for the hospital at 3 am when I went into labor 2 weeks early. Robin always insisted that I would have the baby on February 23 but Lesley came on the 22nd. Funny though her birth certificate was filed with .... you got it Feb 23...

CHRISTINE MCVIE SITS IN WITH FLEETWOOD MAC!

 

Christine McVie joined her former band Fleetwood Mac for one song each at a pair of concerts, and the first one took place yesterday at London’s O2 Arena. As Nicks suggested would probably be the case, McVie came out for ‘Don’t Stop’ — one of her signature Fleetwood Mac songs.

The Sept. 25 show marked McVie’s first stage appearance with the band in 15 years. Following their highly successful tour behind the 1997 live album ‘The Dance,’ she quit the group, citing a desire to quit touring and step out of the spotlight; besides one solo album, 2004′s ‘In the Meantime,’ she’s largely remained silent since then.
