If you're a rock fan of baby boomer age, grew up in Metro Detroit but never saw the SRC, you just weren't trying (perhaps you were grounded for life?)

It was difficult for a teenager to leave the house in the late '60s and not run into the group, an early proponent of acid rock known for hits including "I'm So Glad" and their show-stopping medley of "In the Hall of the Crimson King" paired with "Beck's Bolero."

From 1968-72 the SRC — short for Scot Richard Case — was one of this city's most popular groups during one of the most fertile times for Detroit rock. They were peers of the Bob Seger System, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, Frijid Pink, the Rationals, the Stooges and MC5, and so many more.

The group was signed to Capitol Records and cut three albums for the label from 1968 to '70. They played to a standing ovation at the Toronto Pop Festival in 1969.

On Friday, lead singer Scott Richardson joins original bandmates Glenn Quackenbush (organ), Gary Quackenbush (lead guitar) and Steve Lyman (lead and rhythm guitar) for an SRC reunion at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. He sees the event as perfectly symmetrical with the group's beginnings "cosmologically speaking." Full Story Here

The Rock and Roll Band that changed everything for me was called SRC (The Scot Richard Case Band). I was 14 years old and I saw SRC at a small Catholic school auditorium with about 100 other kids. It was not the first time I had seen a rock band play.....BUT it was the first time I saw real rock and roll played by great musicians.

In Keith Richards biography he talks about hearing Chuck Berry for the first time and how it changed his life.....hearing music that reached down and touched his heart. Never had music done that to him before and that day he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life!

There are not many things that I can remember from when I was that young, but I can remember that night like it was yesterday. Seeing Scott Richardson ( the lead singer) in front of that great band was just like seeing The Beatles or The Rolling Stones in a small club for a young English kid.....Read Full Story

BIG VALLEY ACTOR: PETER BRECK RIP

Peter Breck (March 13, 1929 – February 6, 2012)

One of the best shows on television back in the 1960's was The Big Valley. Most of the girls at school were enamored by Heath Barkley aka actor Lee Majors. But I loved Nick Barkley the most. He was the fighter and always wore black leather clothes with black leather gloves to match. He was hot... Today while researching Don Grady's passing I saw that we lost Peter on February 6, 2012. Here is a bit about the man....

Jarrod, Heath, and Nick Barkley

Joseph Peter Breck (March 13, 1929 – February 6, 2012) was an American character actor of stage, who has played roles on television and in film. The rugged, dark-haired Breck played the gambler and gunfighter Doc Holliday on the ABC series Maverick but is best known for his role as Victoria Barkley's (Barbara Stanwyck) hot-tempered, middle son Nick in the popular 1960s ABC Western, The Big Valley.

From 1965 to 1969, Breck starred in The Big Valley, having portrayed Nick Barkley, ramrod of the Barkley ranch and son to Barbara Stanwyck's character Victoria Barkley. The second of four children, Nick was hotheaded, short-tempered, and very fast with a gun. Always spoiling for a fight and frequently wearing leather gloves, Breck's character took the slightest offense to the Barkley name personally and quickly made his displeasure known, as often with his fists as with his vociferous shouts.

Often this proved to be a mistake and only through the calming influence of his mother and cooler-headed siblings, Jarrod (Richard Long), half-brother Heath (Lee Majors), sister Audra (Linda Evans) and Eugene (Charles Briles,) (written out after season 1), would a difficult situation be rectified. Breck, having been a Barbara Stanwyck admirer since the 1940s, as a teenager, developed a on- and off-screen chemistry with her, practicing longer lines and even being a ranch foreman on the set. After the show was canceled, he stayed close to her until her death.

Peter returned to Vancouver, Canada after The Big Valley and taught acting and had many parts in various projects. He passed peacefully in the hospital this past February.

MY THREE SONS DON GRADY 68 DIED FROM CANCER

Sad news today... ne of my very favorite TV stars of my childhood Don Grady, passed away yesterday from Cancer. Don was famous for playing Robbie Douglas..aka the "cute" one. Don was a "friend" on Facebook and he was so gracious and would answer any question a friend or fan would ask. He was a artist of such high caliber. Here is more on Don....

Fred MacMurray Tina Cole and Don Grady

Don Louis Agrati (June 8, 1944 – June 27, 2012)

Official Don Grady Website

Don Agrati, better known as Don Grady, was an American composer, musician and actor. He is remembered both as one of Mickey Mouse's original Mouseketeers, and as Robbie Douglas, from My Three Sons.

Grady was born Don Louis Agrati in San Francisco, California, the son of Mary B. (née Castellino), a talent agent, and Lou A. Agrati, a sausage maker. He grew up in Lafayette, California, and attended Lafayette Elementary School (where he served as school president) later Burbank High School, and Stanley Junior High, where he spent only a few months before being signed by Disney and leaving the area.

His acting credits included several Western series, including John Payne's The Restless Gun, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, Wagon Train and The Rifleman as well as the NBC medical drama, The Eleventh Hour. Originally the frustrated middle brother on My Three Sons, he became the confident elder brother with the departure of Mike (Tim Considine, who had earlier appeared with Grady in The New Adventures of Spin and Marty), and the adoption of Ernie (Barry Livingston), who became the new "third son."

During production of My Three Sons, Grady both appeared with his own band The Greefs on the series, and was the drummer for The Yellow Balloon, whose self-titled song became a minor hit during 1967. For a while during the run of the series, he attended Los Angeles City College.

RETROKIMMER AND MACHINEGUN: DETROIT ROCKS FILM INTERVIEW

Dennis Thompson and Director Ron Perry

It has been about two years since Ron Perry began his Detroit Rocks Project documentary. I met Ron over the phone in 2010 and in person at the Ivan Kral Blank Generation Screening in Ann Arbor.

Ron Perry is just the very nicest man I think I have had the pleasure to work with. So smart, honest, and focused too. We have collaborated ever since 2010. Basically for the DRP... I recommend some of my friends/aquaintances or ask Ron who is on his "hit" list and then we find them... LOL

Read all about The Detroit Rocks Project and see his newest Trailer HERE

Dennis Thompson waiting for them to finish setting up

One of the very first Detroit Rock Legends on Ron's list was my dear friend and client, Dennis Machinegun Thompson. But Dennis was into other things and difficult to nail down for yet another documentary...

The MC5 guys get asked for interviews every single day... Not a bad thing necessarily but they are usually asked to donate their time. Some of the documentarians feel the promotion should be payment enough... what they don't understand is... they don't need promotion...they need to pay their bills like everyone else...

DKT/MC5 have been working all of their lives and now they should be able to reap the rewards from their massive body of work. I'm just saying... give them their due.

Dennis autographing Nick Marocco's Vinyl Back in the USA

After waiting two years... I received a cheery call from Dennis asking me about Ron Perry's film. As fate would have it.. Ron was in Detroit filming so I made a speedy call to him. Dennis was in the mood and Ron was here. The guys left it up to me to find a filmlocation conveniently located to Dennis.

Tim Tongue and Dennis Thompson

Happened to get another call from one of my favorite Wyandotte, MI residents.. Photographer Patricia Izzo. Wyandotte would be a great location... so I asked her where she thought a good site for filming would be. Very quickly Patty popped up with Tongue's Coffee Shop right on the main street (Biddle) in town. Patty had sent me to that same shop about 9 months ago and I loved Tim Tongue the young co-owner. I had done a fun interview with him and here is that STORY lots of photos and a video too.

Put in a call to Tim and asked him if he remembered Retrokimmer and he laughed so loud... Of course he remembered the strange lady that came and shot photos of everything including the basement and the rest rooms... Such a cool old building! I asked Tim if he would mind if I brought a rock star and movie crew to his shop! We as you can see... Tim was up for more Kimmer Chaos!

Ron, his assistant producer Nick Marocco and I descending on the coffee shop and took the place over! Lights.. Cameras.. Action as they say. Ron and Nick set up very quickly and in walked the man himself.. Mr. Dennis Thompson.

I think Ron was a little shell shocked (pun intended) to meet Machinegun. They liked each other from the start. With a little warm up Ron was ready to begin filming. I was to photograph and shoot short videos to use for MGT's Blog and mine as well. My camcorder of course is no match for Ron's awesome equipment but it serves to give you readers a clue about what it was like that day.

Ron is creating a tribute video for Dennis and we will share that as soon as it comes in from Ron's studio..

Here is my video of Ron warming up Dennis Thompson for his interview:

Stay tuned to RK and MGT's Blog for more videos soon!

Thank you Dennis, Ron , Nick, Patty and Tim!!

Community members, musicians and local businesses are coming together to help a music legend from Ann Arbor.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: The Ann Arbor Benefit for Scott Morgan will take place from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. June 20 at The Necto, 516 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor. A silent auction will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. A $10 minimum donation is required at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.

“It’s nice to have all of the support,” said Morgan, the lead singer of The Rationals, an Ann Arbor group that was popular back in the late 1960s. Morgan is battling liver disease and currently awaiting a liver transplant.

The event is named after the band’s late 1960s cover of Otis Redding’s “Respect." Other songs include “Gave My Love,” “I Need You” and “Hold on Baby.” The group, which included Morgan, Bill Figg, Terry Trabandt and Steve Correll, called it quits in 1970. READ FULL STORY HERE

GANGSTER HENRY HILL DEAD AT 69

Henry Hill, perpetual bad guy and the mobster turned government snitch portrayed in the book "Wiseguy" and later the movie "Goodfellas," has died after a long illness, his fiancé's son said. He was 69. Henry died in a Los Angeles Hospital and not by a mob hit... Guess the mob were tired of him.

Henry Hill was portrayed so well by Ray Liotta in "Goodfellas" that Hill came off as a kind of good guy gangster.. but good he definitely was not...

Henry Hill mugshot

I read every book Henry ever wrote and then we began emailing back and forth when he set up his own website in the 1990's. Henry needed tech support on few things which I assisted. I liked him or so I thought....

Henry Hill June 11, 1943 - June 12, 2012

His two children wrote their own book about "Life on the Run" and I really disliked Henry after reading that book. He was really a crappy narcissistic crook who only thought of himself. That was the end for my being a fan of Henry Hill. His children were nearly destroyed in his world. Luckily they had good grandparents on their mother's side.

Henry was a member (not a made guy) of the Lucchese mafia family in New York in the 1960s through the 1980s. His most famous mafia heist netted $5 million in cash from Lufthansa at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1978.

After becoming an informant for the FBI and entering the government's witness protection program, Henry testified against his former bosses. Entering in the Witness Relocation Program was a huge problem for the FBI. Just trying to keep him from going to jail in Nebraska or Kentucky... He just could walk to the straight and narrow.

Born on June 11, 1941
in Brooklyn, New York, Henry Hill grew up in an area of Brooklyn that was dominated by the Lucchese crime family. Fascinated by gangsters, he began dreaming of being in the Mafia at age 12.

The son of an Irish father and Sicilian mother, Hill could never be a "made" Mafia member because he wasn't a full-blooded Italian, but his charm and cunning made him welcome inside the Lucchese crime family. Hill soon became a close associate and friend of Paul Vario, one of the more respected capos in the family. In his teenage years, Hill would do errands for Vario and his crew, and eventually moved to more serious crime. His time in the Mafia would span three decades, beginning in 1955. Ending when Henry found out his was on the mob hit list and he was going to prison from now on for drug dealing.

To be kind I will hope Henry rests in peace... but this much is true...he has a LOT to answer for.. not just his crimes on society by what he did that endangered his own children... Bye Henry.

When Nicholas Pileggi was working with Henry on his book "Wiseguy" Pileggi's wife Nora Ephron listened in on many of their phone calls and often spoke with Henry herself. The conversations with Henry and the fact that he kept screwing up in the different secret locations the FBI moved him to, led Nora to produce "My Blue Heaven" starring Steve Martin. Henry complained that she stole his life and never paid him a dime from the hit film... Once you know that the Martin character was really Henry makes that film a lot funnier in my opinion.
