MC5: THE MAKING OF KICK OUT THE JAMS

NEW ARTICLE ON THE MAKING OF KICK OUT THE JAMS

The August 2012 issue of Uncut features the MC5’s guitarist, Wayne Kramer, telling the full, wild story of the Detroit revolutionaries. Here, then, is a complementary archive feature, from Uncut’s May 2007 issue, which chronicles the creation of the group’s best-known song. “Right now… right now it’s time to…” FULL STORY IS HERE

From Machinegun...

The song that gets us in trouble, because of that one word. Here’s a live band – with a live record – that’s being introduced with “fuck” in the liner notes, and “motherfucker” in the single, and yet it’s rising up in the charts on AM radio. The word is considered an obscenity. When we did it in public, the police had an excuse to harass us and throw us in jail. Some gigs we didn’t even go to because we heard the cops were waiting for us. The political right was horrified of us, the political left was never happy that we weren’t revolutionary enough. And the corporations were deathly afraid of us, because we were the real thing.

THE GRASS ROOTS WERE HIT MONSTERS....

The Grass Roots had a HUGE series of major hits.. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," "Two Divided by Love" and "Bella Linda" (My favorite)

They helped define the essence of my teen life listening to AM radio. Although I never even knew the names of the players... The Grass Roots managed to chart 14 Top 40 hits, including seven gold singles and one platinum single, and two had hits collections that effortlessly went gold.

One thing I did not know was there were at least three different groups involved in the making of the songs identified as being by "the Grass Roots." So I guess they were like Styx.. Session musicians making up bands perhaps... To this day I had no idea who played in that band...

The Grass Roots

Warren Entner
Creed Bratton
Rob Grill
Terry Furlong
Dennis Provisor
Joel Larson
Virgil Weber
Reed Kailing
Bill Fulton
Rick Coonce

All Music has their complete member roster and it is really long... Makes no difference...I still love listening to the Grass Roots...

SOME OF JOHN NEFF'S RED BASS GUITARS

"In the left corner, wearing red trunks... wait a minnit... they're ALL wearing red trunks!"

#1 is a 1985 Spector NS-2 Bass, made by Stuart Spector, in his garage in Brooklyn, before he got big. It is a Ned Steinberger design, he of the headless bass, a la Sting. Serial number 27, my name in pearl in the last fret.

#2 is a 1967 or 68 Gibson EB2-TDC Bass. It is the KING of reggae and dub-style music. Also, "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" was recorded by Chas Chandler with The Animals on the Epiphone equivalent.

#3 is the "King Bee", my 1961 Gibson Les Paul Standard, SG style, used in the BlueBOB (John Neff and David Lynch) recording, 'Bad Night'. Almost mint.

#4 is my experimental 'stick' bass, which started life as a cheap Cort licensed Steinberger copy. I routed out the body behind it, built an active preamp, swapped out the pickups for very high end active ones, and it became a monster. Used exclusively on the Argentina Turner project, been on many records.

#5, on the right, is a 1964-65 Gibson EB-0 solid body SG-style bass. Another thumper. HUGE low end, not much highs. Kind of like the subwoofer of basses. Not this one, but same model my main bass in 'Zurich'. All of these guitars are museum-caliber, near mint condition.

ROBERT LEE REVUE SHOW WAS FANTASTIC!!

Robert Lee Balderrama

Last night was amazing... I went out to the Chelsea Street Fair in Chelsea, Michigan to see my friends Robert Lee Balderrama (Bobby Balderrama) and his lovely wife Amy Lynn. It was my first time seeing Bobby front his own Smooth Jazz band. Bobby's true love in music is smooth jazz...and he plays it VERY WELL...

The Robert Lee Revue Robert Lee Balderrama lead guitar...Jack Nash on Bass...Tommy Barsheff on Saxophone...Rudolph Levario on Drums... and our favorite keyboard man.. Frank Rodriguez.. The best players.....

Robert Lee Balderrama, aka Bobby Balderrama, renowned guitarist of Question Mark and the Mysterians has delivered yet again - an original and imaginative work . . . a passionate and highly-flavored Smooth Jazz album entitled, FOR THE LOVE OF SMOOTH JAZZ, from his new band ROBERT LEE REVUE.

Each track has its very own unique vibe, setting that 'smooth' mood, which leaves you feeling kissed by a warm ray of sunshine and cooled by a wet splash of salty-air breeze from the seashore.

Featuring a precise blend of fluid guitar riffs, with complementary elements of keyboard and saxophone, leaves listeners wanting more. SANTA CRUZ, the first single to radio, is reminiscent of classic George Benson, whilst album tracks SALVAME and SAMBA NIGHTS reveal a Carlos Santana Latin influence.

Watching this show...the musicians were filled with the joy of playing... it was totally contagious.. The crowd kept growing and growing...This was one cool cat...I was drawn to his playing by the way he just hung back and rode the rhythm with Rudy's drumming... no sweat..

Tommy Barsheff

Frank Rodriguez

Frankie is coming out with a new hot sauce! Little Frankie's Tears.. We can't wait to try it.. Named after a song about Frank from back in the day...

BOOTSEY X! CD RELEASE PARTY!! AUG 18 2012

Robert Mulrooney/Bootsey X

It was a normal night for me on line writing and minding my facebook friends... I saw Robert Mulrooney was online too... I had a gig in Roseville the next night and I thought...WOULDN'T BE FUN TO TAKE BOOTSEY... sooo I instant messaged Bob and asked him to go with me.. He said, "YES".. I asked if he knew who I was... He said, "YES".. I asked him if he knew of my work.. he said "YES".. With that.. I went out to his home and scooped up Bootsey and I had the most fantastic gig because Bootsey was with me there... I LOVE HIM.. what a guy...

Today I am writing a piece about Bootsey's New CD Launch Party... I wanted to find some biography about him... I found a link from Metrotimes where Bootsey's many many friends and fans wrote tributes t him.. They were so beautiful that I want to share them with my readers around the world...

BOOTSEY X RELEASE PARTY

Saturday August 18th 8pm
Corktown Tavern
1716 Michigan Avenue
Detroit, MI 48216
313.964.5103

The Party will be at CORKTOWN (DIRECTIONS)
The CD and DVD box are called Black Brain Red Heart and can be purchased at the door. There will be live bands such as Cheerleader, Troy Gregory and Marcy Bolan will be the DJ.

From Gerald Shohan

The songs on the Black Brain CD are a collection of tunes by bands Bootsey was a part of and played on over the last 35 years. The Ramrods, Coldcock, Destroy All Monsters (with Niagara, Ron and Scott Asheton), Rocket 455, The Lovemasters, and Bootsey’s most recent Solo Project.

From Writer Bill Holdship...

The first time I saw Bootsey X & the Lovemasters play was in the summer of '85 at Paycheck's. I was completely blown away, to say the least. I remember trying to describe them to my friends at the time: "They're kind of like the J. Geils Band gone new wave but with a killer sense of humor. ..." To me, so much of the "Bootsey" personality was sooo Detroit — from the musical attitude and showmanship right down to the sense of humor, which to me fit in perfectly with the CREEM style.
Full Story HERE

From Ricky Rat, Trash Brat and Lovemaster

Sometimes I don't think he really realizes how much the "Bootsey" part of his personality means to so many people. People just love Bootsey! He really is a special guy and has brought so much joy and smiles to so many people. I have learned so much about music, performing and just myself from being around Bob. Sometimes he is not the easiest guy to be a band with — but for the most part, it has been a fun and exciting ride.

From Danny Kroha, musician

Judging by the frequency of plays when Bootsey and I were living together, his favorites were/are the Rolling Stones, James Brown and the Stooges (Funhouse in particular). There was always great music playing in the house when I lived with him, and he's always been funny — one of the funniest dudes I've ever met. Still cracks me up to this day whenever I'm with him. I don't have any specific great stories about him. Some memories are unprintable. Better kept off the record!

From Art Lyzak, Mutants lead vocalist and Lili's manager

Bob sat behind the drums for the Mutants for a short while before he started the Lovemasters, and he's a terrific timekeeper in the early '60s style. Meat and potatoes, not a speck of cereal. He is focused on the beat and moving the song along.

As a frontman, Bootsey — like many Detroit singers of his time — graduated from the University of Iggy. He also took night classes studying with George Clinton. Bob is definitely the funkiest rockingest dude ever from the Farmington Hills-Livonia area.

I had the pleasure of working with the man in Dark Carnival with Ron Asheton and Niagara, and also in the BAD [Bootsey, Art & Dave] Experience with Polish Muslim Dave Uchalik and Let's Talk About Girls behind us. Singing an extended chorus of "Love Train" onstage with Bootsey is sheer musical joy. Trust me on this.

From Andrew Peabody, former Coldcock singer
In my mind, Bob "Bootsey X" Mulrooney, my former bandmate, roommate and longtime friend, has been the heart and soul of the Detroit indie music scene for over 30 years. From the early pre-Bookie's era in the mid-to-late '70s, when he was drumming in half the bands playing on that small punk circuit, through the '80s and '90s, when Bootsey X/Bobby Beyond moved to the front of the stage, Bob has always been there, has always been dedicated to his vision, and has been an entertainer and indie music scholar with no equal...

RETRO KIMMER: ANN ARBOR ART FAIR 2012

Michel Delgado Key West Florida

The awesome painting was my favorite at the State St (Ann Arbor) Area Art Fair. Not that I saw every painting in the huge Fair(s). I plan to go see the Main St Fair today..

Here is a bit about Michel from his WEBSITE

Michel Delgado is a self-taught artist who grew up in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. He is considered to be one of the most visionary Brut artists of our generation. He now lives in Key West, Florida where he applies his unique narrative vision to a variety of mediums.
Artist Statement

Growing up in Senegal, on the west coast of Africa, life and art shared the same space. They were indistinguishable. As a young boy in Dakar I learned that art is the tool I have for a direct and honest conversation with my own heart.

Art always has been my rescuer, my liberator – creatively, emotionally, spiritually. I’m a self-taught painter, able to create in any media, always painting work that is straightforward and personal, work coming from a place within me that is constantly loud and growing.

Humberto Hernandez

Humberto was a fun guy to meet! His work is gorgeous and we loved his wife so much! Here she is... Didn't get her name sorry but she is Mrs. Humberto....

Humberto Hernandez practices the art of silver smithing to make beautiful, hand fabricated pieces of jewelry. Growing up, he learned many techniques from his grandfather, who also worked with silver. He continues to learn taking various classes and by the experimental work in his studio.

Humberto loves the process of creating a beautiful piece of adornment from nothing but a sheet of silver, wire and stones. Each piece is cut, filed, formed, textured, soldered, stone set and polished all by hand, resulting in pieces that are a joy to wear.

His pieces are made from silver with accents of gold, copper and brass. He hand selects beautiful, unusual stones and incorporates them into his pieces using bezel settings.

Humberto imagines the feel of the art and adds texture to his pieces with reticulation, matte finish and/or patina. He introduces a new line of jewelry each year consisting of pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. Humberto carefully handcrafts each piece to be enjoyed by many. See Humberto's WEBSITE

Bruce and Christine are a fabulous team... Bruce does the ceramics and Christine paints the designs.. GORGEOUS pieces here!!! Of course I adore Poppies.... See their ETSY Page

I have no idea what to call these incredible outdoor wind sculptures? but here is a little clip of what they looked like...
