IGGY POP RELEASED A NEW VIDEO ON THE PASSENGER AFTER 43 YRS

"The Passenger" is a song by Iggy Pop and Ricky Gardiner, recorded and released by Iggy Pop on the Lust for Life album in 1977. It was also released as the B-side of the album's only single, "Success". It was released as a single in its own right in March 1998, reaching number 22 in the UK Charts.

The lyrics, written by Iggy Pop allegedly aboard Berlin's S-Bahn, have been interpreted as embodying the nomadic spirit of the punk outcast. Guitarist Ricky Gardiner composed the music. The song is loosely based on a poem by Jim Morrison.

Everything you always wanted to know about Scott Asheton 

but were afraid to ask...Niagara

If you ever had the nerve to be within Scott Asheton's force field, you'd have been stunned by his pale, BLUE eyes. He had a deceptively calm demeanor. Dangerous? Yes. You'd find yourself behaving very carefully. This was mid-70's, Ann Arbor.



Scott played drums with Sonic Rendezvous (Fred Smith-MC5, Scott Morgan-Rationals), at Second Chance, a ballroom/bar. Seeing him only made me (and FEW others at that time) miss The Stooges, since their disintegration years before. The last time I saw them: When Metallic K.O was recorded in Detroit.


Scott was a rock solid drummer. His friends called him "Rock.” His tattoo said "Rock Action". 
People even now are intimidated by the memory of him, though he passed away in March 2014. Some wrote me: "He scared the BEJESUS out of me." But his friends adored him. He was a liked guy. No one could stay mad at him.

We met in that club's dressing room. The Ramones also played that night. I wrote for a Parisian mag- “A Letter from Detroit" sort of thing. 

That summer of 1977, Ron Asheton returned from L.A. Finished with his interim, now defunct band, New Order (with Dennis Thompson-MC5). In the next few weeks, he became lead guitar for my band, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS. DAM had been, up till then, a basement Art/Noise unit. DAM with Ron Asheton promised to be eccentric & somewhat dazzling to an expectant local music landscape.

IGGY POP TALKS ABOUT GROWING UP IN COACHVILLE TRAILER PARK

Iggy talks about growing up in a small trailer park and the stigma he had to contend with in Jr High and High School.  I have always thought that Iggy's rebellious nature came from that odd childhood. 

If I ever meet Iggy, I have one question that I would like to ask...Why when both of his parents had good jobs, did they choose to live in such a "frugal" fashion? 

My mother was a nurse, single mother and yet we had a small home which was 13,000 dollars brand new. I grew up not far from Iggy in Ypsilanti Township on the east side of the country club and west of Hewitt Rd. 

Iggy had to go to Tappan Jr. High which is still considered the "rich kid" school. It had to be horrid for him to carry that stigma around with him. 

I  traveled out to Coachville Gardens a few years ago to show Heather Harris, a serious Stooges fan, what a tiny park Coachvile remains.  The park is now on the east side of a very busy 5 lane business thoroughfare..not out in the boonies. 

PLAYBOY: When you were growing up in Michigan as James Osterberg, your family lived in a trailer. Is that fact relevant to the kind of music you make?

POP: In certain ways. It was a little trailer camp out in the boonies, by U.S. Highway 23, a two-lane blacktop. It was beautiful, surrounded by a stone quarry where you could go swimming and some deep forest where there were animals, and also bean, corn and wheat fields. I always felt different because I lived in a trailer and the other kids lived in houses.

I went to junior high in Ann Arbor, and my close friend there was Kenny Miller, whose dad, Arjay Miller, was running Ford Motor Company at the time. Kenny would take my workbook during class and write, “Osterberg blows dead dogs,” then give it back to me.

A few of the meaner kids came out one day to visit and shook my trailer up a little. It caused a sort of anger that I keep. The strange thing was, people who didn’t know me would later say to guys in my band, “That guy’s a rich kid, right? Because he walks around like he owns the place.”

PLAYBOY: Was there any privacy when you lived with your parents in a trailer?

POP: No. Much later I realized that the big advantage of living in a trailer was that I learned to be civilized. Three people, day and night, in a 500-square-foot trailer—and that was the biggest one we ever had.

Before that it was 400 square feet. My parents were very restrained people. There was no alcohol in the house. In fifth or sixth grade I got into music. If that hadn’t happened, I’d probably be a fundamentalist preacher right now, a Jimmy Swaggart. “Send your dollars to me!”

IGGY ON THE BBC FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Iggy Pop will offer listeners an alternative festive soundtrack when he presents a Christmas Day show on the BBC's digital radio station, 6 Music.

The singer, fresh from his latest tour with the Stooges, will present two programmes over the festive period on 6 Music, part of a Christmas and New Year lineup that also includes Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash.

"To come up with the tunes that fit the concept of each show, I've had to dig back to things that I haven't heard in a long, long time, but that still carry memories of joy and compulsion," said the Lust for Life and The Passenger singer, who is also famous for his collaborations with David Bowie.

"I thought I better check these old numbers to see if they still made the grade for me. They still do."

IGGY'S LEATHER LEOPARD JACKET

Look at that Leopard Head! - growling from the back of Iggy Pop's Jacket on the Stooges 'Raw Power' album. The jacket was made by John Dove and Molly White in 1971. Iggy Pop - with that vacant sullen stare, immortalised by photographer Mick Rock who created an iconic image that has gone down in Rock 'n' Roll history.

I guess every part of the mix that came together by chance (and by design) on the back of the Stooges slab of absolute Punk Rock, would have it's own tale to tell. If you ever get to read anyone's account of the Raw Power tour in '73, you'll be convinced that Iggy was, in his time, the most outrageous Rock 'n' Roll talent in America.

I don't really remember a lot as I went to Island Country Day about 50 years ago. Any memories are tinged by loads of imagination. I also knew the owner Stark's Daughter, I think one was named Nancy Stark and I'm tempted to say the other was Susan. Their High School was Greenhills in Ann Arbor.

I can say that I thought the Castle was like a real medieval Castle and your piece brought memories flooding back to me. Although, I do remember the bubble christmas tree lights on Nana's Christmas Tree. Island Country Day was the perfect place for imaginative children--I remember going to a moving company to get a refrigerator box so that we could make a "spaceship".

I did live close to the Castle, but only went there once in the mid-70s after that time. I also had Iggy Pop as a counselor at Varsity Day Camp, but I will defer to my oldest Friend, Hugh Hitchcock for that story...Hugh is slightly older than I am and confirmed that Jim Osterburg was still at Varsity Day Camp the first year I was there. Between going to a pre-School at a "castle" and having Iggy Pop as a Camp Counsellor, I have an imagination that makes Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes look non-existent!

I am not kidding you, it’s the Gospel truth. Iggy Pop was my camp couselor. His specialty was turtle-catching, in a rowboat. He wasn’t known by the name Iggy Pop in those days, however. Back then he was just Jim Osterberg. Both he and his father “Jimmy” worked at the day camp my mother sent me to.

I was also picked up by Jim’s dad Jimmy in his blue Chevy station wagon many times. Jimmy was the golf counselor at the camp. I took his golfing class a few times. He was a good teacher, but I found the game boring. It was the same way I felt about Archery. In the hot summer sun, I preferred to be near the lake, and since I loved frogs and turtles I invariably ended up with Iggy Pop, err, Jim Osterberg and a few other kids out in the lake in the rowboat, looking for turtles. At age 8 or 9 I’d figured out that Jim Osterberg was my favorite counselor at Varsity Day Camp...FULL STORY

An impressive cast of artists from a variety of genres, including members of such classic-rock legends as Cream, Yes, Def Leppard, The Kinks and Deep Purple, appears on a new album paying homage to The Who. Who Are You: An All-Star Tribute to The Who will be released on CD on October 2, and features renditions of 16 of the beloved band's famous tunes, including "Baba O'Riley," "My Generation," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Love Reign O'er Me" and "Behind Blue Eyes."

Among the well-known musicians contributing to the collection are Cream drummer Ginger Baker, longtime Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, Kinks guitarist Dave Davies and Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice.

A number of the tracks boast interesting combinations of artists. For example, the disc includes a version of "Who Are You" featuring country star Gretchen Wilson and founding Guess Who/Bachman-Turner Overdrive member Randy Bachman. Some of the other well-known musicians on the collection include Todd Rundgren, Iggy Pop, 38 Special, Mountain frontman Leslie West, Sweet, and ex-Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing.

IGGY POP SAYS SCOTT ASHETON ALMOST DIED THIS SUMMER

Finally there is an official release about the health scare surrounding Scott Asheton this summer. I knew it was very serious but we had a very difficult time finding any information on his condition. Scott Morgan was very upset as Rock Action is one of his oldest friends. Dennis Thompson played with the Stooges in July and he was greatly concerned as he and Scott A are long time pals...

We are happy though to hear that Scott A is doing much better, here is the full story.... RK

IGGY POP SCOTT ASHETON STORY

Iggy and The Stooges just wrapped up their annual summer tour of European festivals, but they did most of the dates without original Stooges drummer Scott Asheton – who is recovering from an undisclosed illness. "He was rushed to the hospital after our appearance at Hellfest in France," Iggy Pop tells Rolling Stone. "He was on a flight to England when all sorts of hell broke loose. Without proper medical attention right there he would have bought it. He got very, very good care from the British and all sorts of tests. He's now at home in Florida and I think he'll be fine with a lot of rest."

The Stooges are doing a four-date West Coast tour of the U.S. in September, but Asheton will miss those dates as well. "I want to get him up next year," says Iggy. "The fella that came in to do the job [Larry Mullins] is a worshipful acolyte of his drumming who has been studying every four bars of our musical output since he was a teenager. He knows the songs forwards and backwards."

As I am not a medical person... I can only describe what I heard happened with Scott. In a nutshell he has some form of abdominal/artery problem which was very grave indeed. Now he is at his home and recovering nicely as I was informed by mutual friends.

UK two CD collection containing the cream of Iggy and The Stooge's legendary 1973 rehearsal tapes. For the most part, the material stems from tapes that were recorded in preparation for a nationwide Iggy & the Stooges tour following the release of the David Bowie-produced Raw Power earlier that year.

Iggy Pop and guitarist James Williamson were spitting out memorable songs like machinegun bullets, so the band was basically rehearsing brand new songs; all prime material destined for a fourth Stooges album, one which unfortunately never came to be.

STATEMENT FROM IGGY:
My very hunky friend Deniz Tek famed guitarist and founding member of Radio Birdman will be in town for the upcoming Ron Asheton Tribute Show April 19th at the Michigan Theater on Liberty St in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Deniz and Ron were very good friends for tons of years so it should be a very special night for Deniz.

This Monday January 31st Deniz and Ron Asheton's sister Kathy Asheton will be live on the air with Larry Newman on his Under The Radar show. The show opens with Deniz at 845pm Eastern Kathy Asheton at 8 pm. They'll be discussing the big benefit show for THE RON ASHETON FOUNDATION (Homeless Kitties which Ronnie loved dearly...)
