January 31, 2020: Today, UK indie-electronic band Metronomy have released an Amazon Original track “Up, Higher.” The song, which was originally slated for their critically acclaimed 2019 album Metronomy Forever, is now available to stream and purchase exclusively on Amazon Music.

“‘Up, Higher’ was one of the first tracks written for Metronomy Forever, then it was culled from the final selection! Which seems strange now as it’s such a jam,” says the band’s founder Joseph Mount. “It was a track we played live on our last US tour, so it’s nice to have it out there in the world now.”

Born out of the mind of Joseph Mount, Metronomy has evolved from an early 2000s teenage bedroom project into a critically-acclaimed indie electronic staple. 1964! What a great year for TV for a kid. I loved the magic shows like My Favorite Martian and Bewitched. they were ok to watch with parents in the room. Hollywood gave us The Munsters and The Addams Family that year as well. So I thought I'd share a bit of my top 10 favorites from 1964 for you youngsters out there... :)

1. Bewitched (1964–1972)

A witch married to an ordinary man cannot resist using her magic powers to solve the problems her family faces. Bewitched is an American television sitcom fantasy series, originally broadcast for eight seasons on ABC from September 17, 1964, to March 25, 1972. It is about a witch who marries an ordinary mortal man and vows to lead the life of a typical suburban housewife.

The show enjoyed great popularity, finishing as the number two-rated show in America during its debut season, staying in the top ten for its first three seasons, and just missing this mark with an eleventh-place ranking for both seasons four and five. The show continues to be seen throughout the world in syndication and on recorded media.

2. The Addams Family (1964–1966)

The misadventures of a blissfully macabre but extremely loving family. The Addams Family is an American horror/black comedy sitcom based on the characters from Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons.

The 30-minute television series was created by David Levy and Donald Saltzman and shot in black-and-white, airing for two seasons on ABC from September 18, 1964, to April 8, 1966, for a total of 64 episodes. The show is also notable for its opening theme that was composed and sung by Vic Mizzy.

3. Gilligan's Island (1964–1992)

Seven men and women are stranded on an uncharted island following a torrential storm. Gilligan's Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz. The show had an ensemble cast that featured Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Russell Johnson, Tina Louise, and Dawn Wells.

It aired for three seasons on the CBS network from September 26, 1964, to April 17, 1967. The two top agents of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.) fight the enemies of peace, particularly the forces of T.H.R.U.S.H. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is an American spy-fiction television series[1] produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Television and first broadcast on NBC.

It follows secret agents, played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, who work for secret international counterespionage and law-enforcement agency called U.N.C.L.E. The series premiered on September 22, 1964, completing its run on January 15, 1968.

6. Shindig! (1964–1966)

A musical variety show featuring the biggest acts in rock-n-roll performing their latest hits. Shindig! is an American musical variety series which aired on ABC from September 16, 1964, to January 8, 1966.

The show was hosted by Jimmy O'Neill, a disc jockey in Los Angeles at the time who also created the show along with his wife Sharon Sheeley, British producer Jack Good, and production executive Art Stolnitz.

The original pilot was rejected by ABC and David Sontag, then Executive Producer of ABC, redeveloped and completely redesigned the show. A new pilot with a new cast of artists was shot starring Sam Cooke. That pilot aired as the premiere episode.

7. Flipper (TV Series 1964–1967)

Flipper is an American television program first broadcast on NBC from September 19, 1964, until April 15, 1967. Flipper, a bottlenose dolphin, is the pet of Porter Ricks, Chief Warden at Coral Key Park and Marine Preserve (a fictional version of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida), and his two young sons, Sandy and Bud. The show has been dubbed an "aquatic Lassie", and a considerable amount of children's merchandise inspired by the show was produced during its first run.

8. Daniel Boone (1964–1970)

Daniel Boone is an American action-adventure television series starring Fess Parker as Daniel Boone that aired from September 24, 1964, to May 7, 1970, on NBC for 165 episodes, and was produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Arcola Enterprises, and Fespar Corp. Ed Ames co-starred as Mingo, Boone's Cherokee friend, for the first four seasons of the series.

9. Jonny Quest (1964–1965)

The Quest family and their bodyguard investigate strange phenomena and battle villains around the world.

10. Valentine's Day (1964–1965)

COLORFORMS: ONE OF MY FAVORITE RETRO TOYS

Back in the late 1950s to early 1960s, the first tv obsession I had was Romper Room out of Detroit and Canada. We were lucky to have 2 different Romper Rooms to watch.

My favorite part of the show was Willie the Weatherman. I loved to watch the host pick out what type of clothing for Willie to wear matching the weather outside. One of the very first Colorform sets I had was Willie the Weatherman and my love for these cool toys grew from there.

Colorforms is a creative toy named for the simple shapes and forms cut from colored vinyl sheeting that cling to a smooth backing surface without adhesives. These pieces are used to create picture graphics and designs, which can then be changed countless times by repositioning the removable color forms.

The Colorforms concept was developed by Harry and Patricia Kislevitz in 1951, firmly rooted in the Modernist design ethos and reflecting the Color Field abstract style prevalent at the time.

The basic concept behind Colorforms was the ability to adhere and reposition color form shapes on random surfaces to create art. Both recent art students, Harry and Patricia discovered the idea when they acquired several rolls of flexible paper-thin colored vinyl used to manufacture plastic pocketbooks and found that it would stick to the glossy paint in their bathroom. They found that they could reposition the pieces at will without affecting either surface.

Unlike stickers, which a child could use just once, these pieces could be moved over and over without running out of adhesion.

The first Colorforms product to utilize a licensed character property featured Popeye, the King Features Syndicate cartoon character, released as a boxed set in 1957. Since then, licensed products have remained critically important to the Colorforms marketing strategy, with hundreds of brands connected to Colorforms.

SHELBY MUSTANG GT 350 DEBUTS JAN 27 1965

On January 27, 1965, the Shelby GT 350, a version of a Ford Mustang sports car developed by the American auto racer and car designer Carroll Shelby, is launched. The Shelby GT 350, which featured a 306 horsepower V-8 engine, remained in production through the end of the 1960s and today is a valuable collector’s item.

Carroll Shelby was born in Texas in 1923 and gained fame in the racing world in the 1950s. Among his accomplishments was a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959, making him just the second American ever to win the iconic endurance race.

By the early 1960s, Shelby had retired from racing for health reasons and was designing high-performance cars. He became known for his race cars, including the Cobra and the Ford GT40, as well as such muscle cars as the Shelby GT 350.

According to the New York Times: “In the ’60s, at the apex of the Southern California car efflorescence, his name was synonymous with muscle cars, relatively small vehicles with big, beefy engines. The Cullinan Diamonds

On January 25, 1905, at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa, a 3,106-carat diamond is discovered during a routine inspection by the mine’s superintendent. Weighing 1.33 pounds, and christened the “Cullinan,” it was the largest diamond ever found.

Frederick Wells was 18 feet below the earth’s surface when he spotted a flash of starlight embedded in the wall just above him. His discovery was presented that same afternoon to Sir Thomas Cullinan, who owned the mine. Cullinan then sold the diamond to the Transvaal provincial government, which presented the stone to Britain’s King Edward VII as a birthday gift.

Worried that the diamond might be stolen in transit from Africa to London, Edward arranged to send a phony diamond aboard a steamer ship loaded with detectives as a diversionary tactic. While the decoy slowly made its way from Africa on the ship, the Cullinan was sent to England in a plain box.

Edward entrusted the cutting of the Cullinan to Joseph Asscher, head of the Asscher Diamond Company of Amsterdam. Asscher, who had cut the famous Excelsior Diamond, a 971-carat diamond found in 1893, studied the stone for six months before attempting the cut.
