This is a career spanning anthology of Detroit guitar hero / legend Scott Morgan containing key tracks from his 40 years plus performing and writing music from his beat combo The Rationals version of Respect (pre dating the stellar hit by Aretha Franklin) through the legendary years as a member of the Sonics Rendezvous Band to the teaming up with one of the most exciting rock bands of the time The Hellacopters and forming the Hydromatics and laying waste to most of Europe with their updated versions of SRB tracks onto the Soul Revue Solution based in Sweden and formed with Hellacopter Nicke Andersson

The Brothers of the Road recording of Pirate Music we recorded in the studio of Jeff Jones. B of the R band was..Keyboards Harry (Hairless) Phillips, John Morgan drums, Scott guitar/vocals and I (bass) it was in Livonia Michigan. The executive producer was Gary the Brim Bermley. He was a local music freak who was also involved in the production of the Gang War band. He died a untimely death at the hands of drugs . but the session and the tune has always been a definitive recording of Scott Morgan's music and his song writing style... Ron Cooke

MICHELE OBAMA'S INAUGURAL DRESS/OUTFITS

First lady Michelle Obama made it a fashion tradition Monday night, wearing a custom-made Jason Wu gown to the inauguration balls.

The ruby-colored chiffon and velvet dress was a follow-up to the white gown Wu made for her four years ago when she was new to Washington, the pomp and circumstance, and the fashion press.

She paired the dress with a handmade diamond embellished ring by jewelry designer Kimberly McDonald, and shoes designed by Jimmy Choo. At the end of the inaugural festivities, the first lady's outfit and accompanying accessories will go to the National Archives. An early morning church service today provided a first glimpse at the first lady's Inauguration Day outfit, an all-American coat and dress based on a men's silk tie. First lady Michelle Obama's Inauguration Day outfit is an all-American, high-low, coat-and-dress mix, but it's so cold in Washington you couldn't see the dress under the coat.

Or at least not until the swearing-in was over and she took off the coat for the inaugural lunch with Congress. The first glimpse of her outfit and those of her daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, came earlier today at an Inauguration Day church service. For the swearing-in she added a belt to the outside of her coat and changed into midnight blue suede-and-leather knee-high boots.

The White House said the first lady was wearing a navy Thom Browne coat and dress in a reflective fabric and a pattern based on the style of a men's silk tie. Under the coat, she wore a royal blue bolero-style cardigan by Reed Krakoff, over the Browne dress, which appeared to be pale blue or grey, with an A-line panel-pleat skirt. 

First lady Michelle Obama's first of three outfits under intense scrutiny this inaugural weekend is as American as Coach leather — a deep blue number by Coach creative director-turned-fashion-designer Reed Krakoff.

Mrs. Obama held her family Bible for her husband's official, legal swearing-in today, as per the Constitution, clad in an almost royal blue dress with a cinched waist and A-line skirt made of what looked like a silky material with a jacquard pattern, topped with a same-color knit bolero-style cardigan with three-quarters-length sleeves.

The White House confirmed it was by Krakoff, whose clothes Obama has worn before during the past four years, via the White House pool reports on the lightning-quick swearing-in in the Blue Room.

CHUCK MUER: VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE.. AN UNFINISHED SUCCESS STORY....

It's been almost 20 years since Chuck Muer, his wife and two friends disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.

Chuck Muer was a VERY successful rennovator of historical buildings and restauranteur. He was from Michigan and had many high profile restaurants in SE Michigan.  Yesterday I photographed one of Chuck's greatest rennovations, the Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor.  Read that story here..

While I was working on that story I wondered whatever became of the search for Muer who's 40 ft boat disappeared on a trip from the Bahamas to Jupiter Florida in 1993.

Talk about a COLD case...I can't find a photo of his boat "Charley's Crab". Can't find a photo of Chuck and his wife...weird... A week after the disappearance this case totally dropped off the radar. They searched for him and his party as  peenie wallie humorously describes..

They never found a trace from the wreck, and they searched like it mattered. They mounted a massive search and rescue operation, because the guy was as rich as Croesus, so they searched for him like it mattered. This wasn't a Coast Guard search for a Haitian clinging to a palm tree in the Gulf Stream. This was a "Holy Shit a jillionaire is missing calling-all-cars search-and-rescue" and they never found a trace of him. Nada.

Chuck is famous for leaving his sales job at IBM and jumping into building restaurants.
That decision, resulted in a restaurant empire that grosses more than $60 million annually. The Pittsburgh/Lake Erie train station became the 500-seat Grand Concourse (above), his single biggest money-maker.

Then the unthinkable happened...Chuck, his wife, Betty, and their friends, George and Lynn Drummey, disappeared at sea when a monster storm pummeled the East Coast. His red-hulled 40-foot Charley`s Crab was last seen on March 12, 1993 sailing northwest from the Bahamas, apparently en route to Jupiter, where it was due on March 13. They never made it to port...

LANTANA -- At 4:25 a.m. March 13, 1993, a call came into the 911 emergency center in Palm Beach County.

An operator took the call, but could hear nothing. Nothing but the crackle of static.

The weather had been clear and calm two days earlier when Charles and Betty Muer, joined by lifelong friends George and Lynn Drummey, set sail from the Bahamas for the trip back to Florida. Now, in the early morning darkness,they were losing a desperate battle against 30-foot seas and winds of 70 miles an hour.

At 4:27 a.m., a second call to the 911 center. Again, nothing. Nothing but static.

It was the last anyone would hear from Charley's Crab.

20 years later, no trace of the 40-foot ketch or its four occupants has ever been found. They remain unaccounted for -- presumed victims of the "Storm of the Century."

Crew members aboard a Coast Guard Falcon jet were among the last to see the Charley`s Crab. The jet, on routine patrol, flew over the boat at 2:45 p.m. March 12 as the Charley`s Crab headed northwest from Chub Cay toward the Great Isaac Light, a light tower used as a local landmark on the western edge of the Bahamas.

The location of the boat ``would have put it on a track headed home,`` Coast Guard spokesman Joe Dye said.

The Charley`s Crab also had been seen the previous day, March 11, at Chub Cay.

He came in, he circled around the marina, and he went back out,`` said Gerreth Roberts, dock master at the Chub Cay Club Marina.

The last time anyone on the boat was heard from was on March 11 when George Drummey called his son from Nassau, Mari Muer said. ``He just said, `We`re in Nassau; see you on Saturday,``` she said.

Muer, a skilled sailor, apparently left only a general itinerary with his business associates and seven children. He sailed from Florida on March 2 or 3, and his wife and the others flew to meet him in Paradise Island. They were to sail from Nassau to Chub Cay in the Berry Islands chain and leave there on March 11 for Jupiter.

Sailors at Chub Cay said Muer might have thought the weather would be much less severe than it was, based on forecasts received on March 11.

``Nobody expected that severe a storm,`` said Donald Farrar, of Connecticut, who weathered the storm in his 26-foot Snapdragon off Chub Cay. ``The forecast was for 30 to 40 knots, with occasional gusts. Nobody expected 70 to 80 knots. It was a wicked thing.` Read More

Chuck Muer

Chuck Muer was my first culinary hero. At 10 years old in 1964, my father took me to his friend who lived next to Charley's Crab on Pine Lake (before it burned down). I was mesmerized by all the cars and beautiful people who valet parked and enjoyed his restaurant on a warm summers evening. When I moved to West Bloomfield in 1984, Muer had a restaurant at Maple and Orchard Lake Roads. "Mussels a la Muer, Teacup Bread with Honey Cinnamon Butter, and Crab Stuffed Flounder" were but a few of his trademark recipes.

I met him several times at this location, always cordial and dressed in his signature bow tie. 20 years ago this March, he and Betty were lost at sea (along with George and Lynn Drummey of the Drummey Oldsmobile dealership fame).

The family published two cookbooks posthumously which I bought and truly treasure. One has a picture of Chuck and his beautiful wife Betty which I share here. His passing ended a hallmark in the Detroit restaurant establishment that has been rarely duplicated since. Michael McDaniel

ANN ARBOR'S GANDY DANCER RESTAURANT, CEDAR BEND AND ISLAND PARK!

Ann Arbor's Gandy Dancer Restaurant

The elegant 1886 Michigan Central Railroad Station at 401 Depot Street, now the Gandy Dancer restaurant, testifies to the importance of train travel a hundred years ago. No expense was spared to make this massive two-towered stone building what the Ann Arbor Register called "the finest station on the line between Buffalo and Chicago."

I was so lucky to have been on a field trip in 2nd grade to visit the Kellogg's Plant in Battle Creek, Michigan.  That had to be about 1962 or so. We rode a train and boarded at this very cool building.

Back in the day access to a railroad line could mean the difference between life and death for a struggling young town in the mid-nineteenth century. Before the Michigan Central reached Ann Arbor in 1839, a trip to Detroit was a difficult all-day affair on horseback. 

On the train, it could be done comfortably in two and a half hours. The movement of freight improved even more dramatically. The depot swiftly became the funnel through which virtually all traffic in and out of the city passed.

The Michigan Central was putting up new depots all along its route when the Ann Arbor station was built, but each had its own unique design. Ann Arbor's was designed by Detroit architect Frederick Spier (who also designed the Kelsey Museum and St. Thomas Catholic Church) in the then-popular Richardson Romanesque style.

It was built by Gearing and Sons of Detroit of glacial stones quarried from Four Mile Lake between Chelsea and Dexter and cut at Foster's Station on Huron River Drive near Maple Road.

The track side of the Gandy Dancer today is much narrower as Chuck Muer added a wall of tables with the back wall being all glass. If you look at the 1900 photo above you can see how much wider the platform was back then...

The inside was elegant, with stained-glass windows, red oak ceilings and trim, and French tile floors, and even separate waiting areas for men and women. Ivy grew up the side of the building, petunias and carnations were planted around it, and a fountain spurted at the point of a triangular garden just east of the baggage shed, where the Gandy Dancer's valet parking lot is now.

Freight operations were handled out of a smaller stone building to the west of the main station. In those days, before trucks, trains carried goods of every description, from food (for instance, bread from the Ann Arbor Home Bakery was delivered to the western part of the state) to kit houses.

Whole train cars were devoted to mail, which was sorted as the train moved and then thrown out onto station platforms as the train whizzed by. Mail service was often faster than it is today: a letter mailed at the Ann Arbor station in the morning could be delivered in Chicago that afternoon.

In 1970, the depot was sold to Chuck Muer, a restaurateur with an interest in historic restoration. By then the trickle of passenger traffic that remained was easily accommodated in the former freight building to the west and later in a small station built by Amtrak west of the Broadway Bridge.

Muir, who later did similar remodeling of an historic fire station in Cincinnati and a railroad station in Pittsburgh, kept this building intact. The original stone walls, slate roof, stained-glass windows, red oak ceilings, fireplace, and baggage scale are still there.

He added a kitchen in the open area between the baggage building and waiting room, windowed in the platform area, and changed the color of the outside trim, from green to dark mauve. Muer named his restaurant the Gandy Dancer, after the laborers who once maintained the tracks.

Cedar Bend Nature Area is a 19-acre park on the steep bank of the river where the waterway makes a sharp bend back to the south. Parking is available in the main lot accessible from Island Dr, and there is pull-off parking on Cedar Bend Dr.

Facilities are available at nearby Island Park and there are picnic spots along the river near the main parking area. Trails are unpaved, leading up (or down) the steep slope, and also travel a ridge of the slope. Another trail option is a rough unpaved one-way road which winds through the park from Cedar Bend Dr to Island Dr.

The view from Cedar Bend Dr. is now overgrown even in winter. Back in the 1970's the view of Ann Arbor was much prettier than now.. We were somewhat disappointed by the view today.

The entire wooded portion of the park is dry forest, although not as open as it once was, as indicated by several large, spreading trees now being crowded by younger competitors. Unfortunately, like many of our natural areas, Cedar Bend’s native flora also faces competition from invasive, non-native plants such as honeysuckle

The Huron River has a split here in Island Park..We used to party here a lot when I was in High School.

Back in the late 70's, My boyfriend had a retriever dog and she was only 6 months old when I took her to this park. A bunch of ducks came swimming upstream and the dog bolted and dove in the river after them...

I had to jump in and pull her back to shore..when we go out both of us soaking wet, a charming policeman onshore gave me a lovely TICKET for my dog harassing the dang ducks!!

The Rockets

The seventies rock & roll in the Motor-city... An amazing time to be playing in the bar scene. Between Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Toledo there where only a handful of clubs and they would be packed every night.

I started a new band called The Rockets featuring Jim McCarty on guitar who was also a band mate from our first band Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels. And on bass was John Fraga, and Marc Marcano on keyboards. We had no vocalist at the time and so I sang from behind the drums.

 

There were many musician friends who would always stop by and wanna sit in, we only allowed the musicians we knew who could play to sit in. There was a young lad that would always be hanging out and asking us to let him sit in, he had a cropped haircut like the English musicians ala The Faces and he always had on a Burgundy Velvet suit.

He was like the Mick Jagger of Detroit. Before he would sit in he'd walk into the restroom and wrap wads of toilet paper around his neck and as we started to play he would grab the mike and start singing while ripping piece's of the paper off from around his neck and he'd be throwing piece's of it at the girls on the dance floor.

And believe me I'm talking about a lot of toilet paper. The dance floor would be covered. He had it all, a rock star in the making. At the time The Rockets were managed by John Sinclair and Pete Andrews who lived in Ann Arbor.

After playing the Red Carpet one night and Johnny sitting in with us, the next day I had to go to a band meeting in Ann Arbor. It was early afternoon and I was in heavy traffic, as I was flying down I-94 just passing Metro Airport I did a double take because out of the corner of my eye....

I saw Johnny Angelos hitch-hiking on the side of the freeway with his Burgundy Velvet suit on and messed up hair in the hot sun, and I'm thinking damn that's one crazy mf. He never even went home yet and the man is heading out to sing on another gamble with love in his eyes. Johnny was a bad-ass singer who never reaped the awards he was due.

Detroit Guitarist Robert Gillespie and Johnny Angelos formed the Torpedos in October 1978, fusing their love of classic Motown soul and blues with elements of Heartbreakers and Sex Pistols punk. Gillespie says the Torpedos stood out from an emerging pack of new bands because “we had killer songs and a excellent front man in Johnny, who was like Rod Stewart, but more deviant.”

They developed a following, label interest and landed choice shows with the Romantics at venues such as Cleveland’s Agora ballroom and Detroit’s Masonic Temple. They got some radio support from Doug Podell and Steve Kostan. Yet it was not enough.

The Torpedos broke up shortly after Angelos split in 1981. He went on to form the Reputations with guitar slinger Bobby East. The Torpedos tried to continue with Thomas Anonymous, a singer from New York.
