PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE: OCT 23, 2014

A SOLAR ECLIPSE happens when the Sun is near one of the nodes of the lunar orbit, so Earth, Sun and Moon form a straight line,

On the afternoon of October 23rd, two weeks after the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow, the Moon will cast some of its own shadow onto Earth.

Nowhere will this eclipse of the Sun be total. But as the map below shows, for most of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the Sun will be partially eclipsed. For this event, the farther west and north you are the better. In the American West the entire eclipse happens while the Sun is still fairly high in the afternoon sky. In most of the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada, the eclipse is still in progress at sunset

HBO announced today that it will break the cable TV bundle by offering its service directly to consumers over the Internet in the U.S. beginning next year.

HBO is currently available only to subscribers of pay-TV packages. But growing competition and changing consumer behavior has forced HBO's hand.

"It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO," CEO Richard Plepler said at an investor conference in New York. "In 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States."

WHITBY ABBEY: BRAM STOKER'S INSPIRATION FOR DRACULA!

 

Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire, England. Whitby Abbey built in 657 AD is the inspiration behind Dracula's Castle written by Bram Stoker.. 

Whitby is the scene for a good section of the novel with the arrival of Count Dracula to England's shores aboard the Russian ship, the Demeter which runs aground on the shores of Tate Hill beach in the town's harbor during a fierce storm.

The most prominent landmark in Whitby is the ruin of Whitby Abbey, which was sacked by the Danes. As Stoker writes, "It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits.... Between it and the town there is another church, the parish one, round which is a big graveyard, all full of tombstones".

When Stoker visited the local library and borrowed a book entitled An Account of the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (1820) by William Wilkinson. 

He took several notes from it (now part of his papers housed at the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia.) Though the information was sketchy, one item attracted Stoker's attention...a footnote that "Dracula in the Wallachian language means Devil." 

Stoker decided to change the name of his vampire Count from "Wampyr" to "Dracula".

Universal has optioned Evan Hughes' article investigating a legendary teen drug dealer, who was also working as an FBI informant

Universal has optioned true-crime story The Trials of White Boy Rick with Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski attached to direct.

Journalist Evan Hughes wrote the article, which centers on Rick Wershe, a teen living in Detroit in the 1980s. He joined the ranks of the drug kingpins on the predominantly black East Side to become a prolific cocaine trafficker, going by the name "White Boy Rick."

Hughes' story uncovers the true identity of Wershe, who worked as an undercover informant for the FBI and DEA while simultaneously rising to become one of the biggest drug dealers in the city.

The story was first published by The Atavist, a publisher of original digital nonfiction, on Sept. 29. The site was founded by Evan Ratliff and Jefferson Rabb.
