RETRO: KIMMER AT THE 8 BALL WITH SCOTT MORGAN!

Happy Birthday Scott!

Yesterday was Scott Morgan's birthday! Mine was the 9th and Scott the 11th. His family gathered to take Scott out for a nice dinner at the Real Seafood Co. in Ann Arbor. After dinner everyone was meeting up at the infamous 8 Ball Bar underneath the Blind Pig.

Scott Morgan and his beautiful sister Jeannie xxoo

Scott's sister Jeannie was there with her husband and her daughter Jennifer. Jennifer is an artist too like my daughter Lesley. Really sweet girl.

Back in action once more

For the first time since the 80's I picked up a pool cue. Used to shoot tournament pool back in the day and was way out of practice. It was really funny... I sunk like 4 bank shots! Even Scott cheered when I banked the most difficult one. Really fun!!! I won every game I played! Maybe I'll go buy a cue and take up the sport once more...

Someone kept blowing up my cell inside the club and I didn't recognize the number so I ignored it. It was GABE... he was sitting at the rail looking right at me ignoring that phone!

I NEED YOU CHUCK JACKSON AND SCOTT MORGAN

Very successful fabulous soul singer Chuck Jackson was the original singer for One of my favorite hits by Scott Morgan and The Ratio9nals. I like them both, but am partial to Scott and The Rationals harmonies vs Chuck with the girl backup singers. What do you think?

FREDDY SCOTT: HEY GIRL

Freddy Scott

Freddie Scott, singer: born Providence, Rhode Island 24 April 1933; married; died 4 June 2007.

In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down.

Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favorite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time. Read full bio HERE
This song is anthemic of the 60's and one of my most favorite tunes and crooner songs of music history. Enjoy Freddie singing "Hey Girl"

KAREN ANN HUNTER'S NEW CD EMPTY SPACES...

Love "Empty Spaces" so much!

Happened upon Guitar Legend Steve "The Deacon" Hunter on Facebook a bit ago today. Steve mentioned needing some boost for his wife Karen Ann Hunter's new cd. I thought... hmmm I can help!

Cool couple! Steve "The Deacon" and Karen Hunter

After I recently wrote a piece featuring The Deacon, Karen was so thoughtful and sent me a lovely thank you note... Rare... but so appreciated for sure. xxoo

Read Karen Ann's Bio HERE

Download Empty Spaces HERE

Steve produced Karen's cd and played all the instruments while his wife provided the amazing vocals. Ms Karen created a You Tube Video for each song which is no easy feat!

Just watched all of her videos and I just can't tell you in words how her voice and that music moved me. I am not kidding! I hear tons of new music and though I enjoy a majority of it, Karen's music just made me want to run to the music store. I am going to share her video links so please watch these, they are absolutely breath-taking.

Steve worked his ass off on this album, he did all the arrangements, played all the instruments; stunning guitar; keyboard, bass, lap steel, pedal steel, programmed drums and added string arrangements that melt your heart. KAH

The compact disc is coming out next week. Ms Karen will be guest writing for RK soon too! Also have a surprise for you with The Deacon too! So stay tuned to RK xxo0

BEHIND THE LEGENDARY RECORDING STUDIO UNITED SOUND....JOHN NEFF

This beautiful United Sound building, on Second Avenue at Antoinette, became Detroit's first major recording studio in 1933. Number 5840 had been a residence prior to it's procurement by Jimmy Siracuse and Bernie Besman.

My friend John Neff from Northern California answered a question for me the other day so perfectly that I just had to share it with my readers. Every knows the vast history of Berry Gordy's Motown Recording at Hitsville. Yet there is another legendary Recording studio called United Sound which began it's long history way before Gordy and in fact Gordy got his start at United. So I hope you enjoy a sneak peek inside United Sound with John.... Thanks JN!! xxooK

MC5

Over the year's it has seen tons famous artists pass through it's doors, including John Lee Hooker, Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin and The Mighty MC5.

From John Neff:

United Sound Systems was on 2nd Ave. near Cass, near Wayne State University, in Detroit. I was the 'Blue Eyed Soul Brother' in 'The Company', the house rhythm section, that played on everybody's records.

Don Davis had been the lead Producer at Motown, in the Golden Era, and eventually learned that he was never going to see a dime from Berry Gordy. So he quit, got backing, and bought the biggest studio in Detroit. He duplicated the Funk Brothers with a section that played on all the house-produced records.

In the Fall of 1970, I became the staff guitarist. I had been working with Alan Ryles, a drummer from Pontiac who became the staff drummer, and he told them about me. I got invited to a session, and played on some record whose title I can't remember, alongside the session guitarist of the time.

Don told the engineer to use my track and invited me back the next day. The other guitarist threw a fit, but I never saw him again. I had had a white boy blues band in Detroit called The Electric Blues Band, and we got signed to Elektra after the 1969 Ann Arbor Blues Festival, at which we played, alongside the MC5 and Junior Wells and Buddy Guy.

One of the MC5 Hill St Houses

Jac Holzman from Elektra was there to see the MC5 and signed us, as we were friends of them and stayed at the Hill Street House a lot.

Brother Wayne (Kramer) was very instrumental (so to speak) in this. So until early 1974, I played guitar and synth (very early-very crude) on hundreds on soul records produced at United Sound.

Detroit, of course, has a storied history of magic happening. From John Lee Hooker’s after-hours recordings at United Sound in the ’50s and the sounds pumping out of the factory that was Hitsville USA in the ’60s to the racket rising from basements, backrooms and converted spaces in the ’80s and ’90s where producers, soundmen and engineers cut their chops making records for would-be next generation stars. SONNY VINCENT INTERVIEWED BY JESUS LOVES THE STOOGES

Sonny Vincent

Hey Kim.

I made an interview with Sonny Vincent, so I wanted to share it with you.

He has played with many Detroit legends (Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, Scott Morgan, Wayne Kramer .... ) so one part of the interview is about that "real cool time".

People in this part of the world are not sufficiently familiar with Sonny's great music, so I wanted to do a little promotion for him.

All the best,

Goran JESUS LOVES THE STOOGES

Here is the Sonny Vincent interview

Sure Goran... Sonny is the best and Scott Morgan says he was featured on one of Sonny's records. Scott Morgan and Scott Asheton went to Nashville (about ten years ago) for a week to record with Sonny and recorded with him in Michigan too. Scott likes his work a lot. Scott says they stayed at what he jokingly refers to as "the gangland motel". :)

RETRO: KIMMER: MY MUSTANGS!

1964 1/2 Ford Mustang Convertible

Here is my gift from my Moms boyfriend Chuck that I sported around town at 17 years old. 13,000 original miles and the engine had been freshly painted. Damn I had no shortage of dates after I got this machine. Drove it in a lot of parades and car shows too circa 1973-74. I had those exact wheels and thin white walls too. I used to feel like I was driving a speed boat in this cool car. Guys at the Dairy Queen went wild when they popped the hood and saw that gorgeous 289.

1988 Ford Mustang GT 5.0

This photo above is almost identical to my 1988 GT mustang... I didn't have the ground fx and I think it looked much better without that plastic stuff on it.
See the sides of the spoiler? With mine you could stick your hand under the sides too. Such a cool car but really bad in winter. No trunk space and tiny back seat but the little boys sure came running when I wheeled up in this cherry red car.
