TWIN PINES DAIRY: MEMORIES FROM DETROIT

One of my favorite kiddie tv shows was Milky the Clown which was sponsored by Twin Pines Dairy. Milky would do a trick and ask the kids in the tv audience to say the magic word....TWIN PINES. Marketing genius!

Back in my early childhood milk was delivered in glass bottles to your home and the bottles recycled. There was a time when giant super-markets weren't on every corner, so milk, butter, and egg delivery was very convenient. Below are some memories of Detroiters who loved Twin Pines. -K

Martin Filiatrault Yep... Twin Pines delivered to our house in Bloomfield Hills. In fact, when I was a little kid, a driver went off Wabeek road 1/4 mile away, crashed into a ravine and was killed. For years afterward, you could find empty milk bottles in that ravine... some kids used to gather them up and break them in the driveways of their enemies. True story.

Ralph Zollars I was a "jumper". I'd jump off the truck with up to 6 half gallons of milk in a carrier. We still delivered glass bottles and picked up the empties. Damn, I'm old.

Susan Wolter-Brown in the morning I would drink the cream off the top, replace the lid and pretend nothing happened just to mess with my brothers..

Dennis Thompson: Mom used to have the Twin Pines truck stop and drop off quarts of milk in glass bottles and then the Awrey's bread truck would come by with baked goods and pastries. In the summer, there was the strawberry man who would be driving in his little trucks yelling, "Strawberries strawberries strawberries 3 quarts for a dollar!" Mom would make homemade shortcake to go with them. That's the way it was in the 1950s...

Tom Stevens Had a galvanized milk box on the front porch for deliveries...also had same delivery driver for like 30 years...when my dad and grand parents who were living at the house passed away, leaving only my mom who didn't drink milk, it was sad to leave a note in the milk box: Sorry, no more milk deliveries at this address. I think Mr. McKinstry was 70+ yrs old then...

Rocky Grindle Wow! I remember those trucks! And oh, yeah, I remember that clown!!

Ken Levise Geez! Milky delivered your milk right to your house. We had to go to the dairy on 11 mile road and Mound or was it Ryan. Milky was a pro. juggler. I met someone that he had taught the art.

THE GODFATHER MANSION FOR SALE AFTER RETRO RENNOVATION

The Staten Island estate where “The Godfather” was filmed is back on the market for $2.89 million.
The home’s exterior was used in the movie to shoot such memorable scenes as the wedding of Connie, played by Talia Shire. The backyard — where a pool now exists — is where Don Corleone, played by Marlon Brando, died.
 

Now the owner has renovated the massive eight bedroom, three bathroom home so that parts of it — like Don Corleone’s office — look like what it looked like in the movie.

The 6,248 square foot English Tudor style mansion is on more than half an acre at 110 Longfellow Ave. in the posh Todt Hill section of Staten Island.

It was originally built in 1930 for Joseph Palma, who was married — with 11 children–and became Staten Island’s borough president in 1933. The next owner kept the mansion in his family for six decades. That was Edward Norton III, who was in high school when Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert Duvall were filming the movie. Producers discovered the house thanks to actor Gianni Russo, who grew up near there.

KIMMER MEETS THE KINGPIN'S KID AND LEWIS!

What a fun and productive lunch meeting we had today! Courtney Brown Jr. and Lewis Stevens came to Ann Arbor to discuss marketing and promotion with me. Courtney is the KING PIN'S KID and CEO of Big Boss Filmworks. Lewis is Vice President of Marketing of Big Boss Filmworks and also has his own company Flyers Plus Graphics.

There are more African American men in jail than in college. The unemployment rate among African American men in most major cities is 70%. The African American infant mortality rates are at third world levels. How did we get here? Could these statistics apply to the descendants of the great West African king and controller of the world’s gold and salt distribution of his day, Mansa Musa or to the descendants of Detroit’s Black Bottom, The Harlem Renaissance or Black Wall Street in Tulsa Oklahoma?

BENTON WOOD FEATURED WITH WILLIAM PILGRIM & THE ALL GROWS UP!

Brenton Wood and LA based band William Pilgrim & The All Grows Up collaborated recently and created a fine remake of Wood's 1967 chart topping single "Gimme Little Sign." The duo have also created an inspiring and heartfelt music video with the icon which can be seen here:

William Pilgrim's new album Epic Endings also features collaborations with iconic, 6-time Grammy Award winning group the Blind Boys of Alabama and with groundbreaking lead singer of punk band X, Exene Cervenka. Singer Ish Herring and lead guitarist Philip Romero's distinct late 60's soul and Americana sound is the perfect match for the blues, funk and folk style of the Blind Boys who appear on the bands lead off new single "In the Streets."

Growing up in the unstable and always changing foster care system and then living on the streets of New Orleans, lead singer Ishmael Herring moved to Los Angeles where he spent 5 years homeless, but always stayed connected to music. Throughout his time on the streets, he was able to teach himself how to play a variety of instruments including the guitar, piano, drums and harmonica. It wasn't until Philip Romero, a Southern California based songwriter, producer/musician and filmmaker, answered a Craigslist offering vocal services for hire that the two connected.

Having been helped by various shelters when he was homeless, the band now works with LA Youth Network which strives to empower abused, neglected and homeless adolescents and teach them how to become self-sufficient by providing emergency shelter, food, and educational programs as well as My Friend's Place. Both Pilgrim and Romero enjoy volunteering in their spare time at the organization's Creative and Living Arts Program, which focuses on a range of creative and life enriching workshops that encourage self-expression and development.

TRINI LOPEZ AT PJS 200 GRAM VINYL LP

Exhibit Records announces the release of a Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition album of Trini Lopez, "At PJ's." The 200 gram vinyl record is beautifully presented in a sturdy old style gatefold jacket featuring the original album art work and for the first time includes the lyrics to all the tunes. The back of each album is foil-stamped with its unique number.

With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the biggest singing stars of the Folk Revival. Trini Lopez, "At PJ's" made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for over a year. The album included the chart-topping "If I Had a Hammer" which reached number one in 36 countries and was a radio favorite for many years. The hit single sold more than 4 million copies and the album sold over a million and was awarded a gold record.

This was the album that made Lopez an instant success and the live party-a-go-go atmosphere of the record did much to put Trini's likable energy over the top. What Lopez did, at the head of a trio was to make folk-pop swing. Other songs include "This Land Is Your Land," and "Gotta Travel On." It could be surmised that by treating such material in this fashion, Lopez had a tiny influence upon the subsequent folk-rock movement...though, Lopez was more the all-around entertainer with a Latin lilt than he was a pure folk singer, so you also get "America" (from West Side Story), "La Bamba," Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," "Volare," and "When the Saints Go Marching In."
