DETROIT TIGERS CLINCH THE AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT!!!!


Max Scherzer struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings and Jhonny Peralta belted a pair of home runs as the Tigers completed a sweep of the American League Championship Series on Thursday in Detroit to earn its 11th World Series appearance.

Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson also went deep for the Tigers, who await the winner of the National League Championship Series between the defending champion Cardinals and the Giants, who won the Series in 2010.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia (0-1) was pounded for six runs -- five earned -- and 11 hits in just 3 2/3 innings as the Yankees were swept in a playoff series for the first time since the Royals accomplished the feat in the best-of-five 1980 ALCS.

Scherzer (1-0) was sensational over the first five frames, keeping the Yankees hitless while fanning nine. The right-hander, who finished second in the major leagues in strikeouts to teammate Justin Verlander during the regular season, had his no-hit bid halted when Eduardo Nunez led off the sixth with a triple.
