HALLOWEEN MOVIES AT THE MICHIGAN AND STATE THEATERS IN ANN ARBOR!!

Halloween Takes Hold at the Michigan & State Theaters

A full line-up of special Halloween programming is scheduled, including Nosferatu (featuring a live score by Little Bang Theory), Young Frankenstein, Hocus Pocus, The Evil Dead, and more

Ann Arbor, MI – October is here, and the Michigan and State Theaters in downtown Ann Arbor have scared up a jam-packed program full of one-of-a-kind special screenings and spooktacular Halloween classics both new and old.

Notable highlights include a never-before-heard version of the Halloween tradition NOSFERATU in the main auditorium. The historic Barton Organ, which usually accompanies the 1922 silent film, is undergoing repairs.

Stepping in with an original score is Ann Arbor’s own LITTLE BANG THEORY, an experimental trio that performs on toys and tiny instruments. Founded by composer Frank Pahl and featuring Terri Sarris and Doug Shimmin, Little Bang Theory promises to bring a new twist to an old classic. Nosferatu is sponsored by The Ravens Club and Vibrant Life Senior Living and screens on Friday, October 19 at 7pm. Special ticket prices apply.

Other classics taking the screen at the Michigan include THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW on Saturday, October 20 at 10:00 PM. The perennial midnight favorite features Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick in a campy, musical send-up of 1950s sci-fi.

The U-M student-led shadowcast THE LEATHER MEDUSAS will return to the stage to recreate last year’s sold-out show. Sing along, shout along, and dance along!

Over at the State Theatre, two ongoing film series take on a Halloween twist. HOCUS POCUS and FRANKENWEENIE screen as part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series presented by the Benard L. Maas Foundation. All Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series films are FREE for kids 12 and under! Hocus Pocus screens on Sunday, October 21 and Frankenweenie screens on Sunday, October 28. Both shows begin at 1:30 PM.

Meanwhile, Midnights at the State honor slasher classics both new and old with thematic pairings on Friday and Saturday nights. The original THE EVIL DEAD and CABIN IN THE WOODS will scare you away from camping on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13; then, THE EXORCIST and THE BABADOOK will possess you on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27. Friday screenings take place at 9:30pm; Saturday screenings start at 11:59pm. All Saturday screenings are only $8!

Finally, the Michigan Theater will celebrate its members (more than 4,000 of them!) with a special screening of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN on October 23 at 7:30pm. Admission is free for members of the Michigan & State Theaters, who are invited to a pre-show reception in the grand foyer at 5:30pm. Not a member of the Michigan Theater? Tickets are available for purchase.
