ROXY MUSIC: DANCE AWAY

Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music

I had a giant giant crush on Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Heard lots of rumors of why Jeri Hall left Bryan for Mick Jagger but for my money... Bryan would win....

Check out Bryan Ferry's Tour for 2011.... HERE

Bryan Ferry (born 26 September 1945, Washington, County Durham, UK) is an English singer, musician, and songwriter. Ferry came to public prominence in the early 1970s as lead vocalist and principal songwriter with the band Roxy Music, who enjoyed a highly successful career with three number one albums and ten singles entering the top ten charts in the United Kingdom. Ferry began his solo career in 1973, while still a member of Roxy Music, which continues to the present day. Ferry is known for his unique vocal style and stage presence.

RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY 75TH BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE CD

Buddy Holly

RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY CELEBRATES ROCK ICON'S 75TH BIRTHDAY AND ENDURING LEGACY

From Johnny Bee Badanjek:

Hi Kim, Buddy Holly's 75th Birthday's coming up and I'm playing drums on the Detroit Cobras track "Heartbeat." Great news! Can't wait to get this disc. Bee playing with my favorite Detroit Homegirls The Detroit Cobras. Listen to Bee play and the Detroit Cobras sing HEARTBEAT

In his short-lived but extraordinary life, Buddy Holly left behind a body of work so enthralling, his enduring influence is nearly impossible to overstate. The melodic joy and fierce independent streak at the core of his artistry is profoundly felt on Rave On Buddy Holly, a 19-song collection of indelible Holly covers by a rich assemblage of current musical visionaries and creative kindred spirits.

LISTEN TO ALL THE TRACKS HERE

Fantasy/Concord will release Rave On Buddy Holly June 28, 2011. Rave On's striking collection of musicians share Holly's insurgent rebel spirit and outsider point of view. The artists cross generations and styles, collectively and defiantly embracing Holly's distinctive rough and tumble inventiveness.

Very few songwriters could inspire passionately personal, fearless cover versions from performers such as My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Justin Townes Earle, The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, She & Him, Modest Mouse, Paul McCartney, Julian Casablancas, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Fiona Apple and John Brion, Graham Nash, The Detroit Cobras with Johnny "Bee"Badanjek on drums, Kid Rock, John Doe, Karen Elson, Nick Lowe and Jenny O. Which is part of what makes this much more than a mere "tribute album."

Rave On Buddy Holly steers clear of the reverent re-creations typically found on similar projects; the artists clearly felt free to explore radically new interpretations. Florence + The Machine bring an industrial New Orleans vibe to "Not Fade Away" (with help from Bayou icon Ivan Neville on keys).

The Black Keys' elemental accompaniment touches the emotional core of "Dearest" while Modest Mouse takes "That'll Be the Day" into truly avant-garde territory. Cee Lo Green's exquisite vocals, for example, echo among handclaps and percussion on his epic reading of "Baby, You're So Square." Paul McCartney's take on the originally lilting "It's So Easy" is a raw, propulsive excursion filled with boisterous spoken ad-libs.

Lou Reed lays down a blazing "Peggy Sue," replete with overdriven guitars and loopy keyboards. The romantic underpinnings of Holly's music are cleverly revealed in Rave On's multiple male-female pairings: Apple and Brion, Reed, Elson and (husband/producer) Jack White and She & Him.

Daringly Original Tribute Collection Features My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Nick Lowe, Florence + The Machine, Cee Lo Green, Paul McCartney, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Julian Casablancas and more - Available June 28, 2011 From Fantasy Records /Concord Music Group

Known for his work with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson and Todd Haynes, esteemed film-music supervisor Randall Poster was sought out to produce and oversee the project. "As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album," explains Poster "we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle ... that traces back to the roots of rock and roll and shapes so much of the music that followed."

Poster gives special recognition to producing partner Geyla Robb and her overall influence on Rave On's exceptional blend of tender toughness. Poster also credits the album's richness to the various track producers, such as Matt Sweeney, Joe Henry, Jack White and C.C. Adcock.

A true pop pioneer whose astonishing tunes boasted rock 'n' roll punch, irresistible hooks and boundary-pushing sonic sweep, Buddy Holly would be 75-years-old on September 7th of this year. Sadly, of course, he died in 1959 at age 22. But Holly's music never died, and has exerted a profound influence on virtually every part of the pop music soundscape.

His sparkling hooks, tender lyrics and elegantly concise compositions set the bar for all the rock, country and pop tunesmiths who followed in his brilliant wake. A bold affirmation that proves his music, on the eve of his 75th birthday, is more relevant than ever, Rave On Buddy Holly tips its collective hat with love and appreciation.

NEW VIDEO FOR DICK WAGNER

Legendary guitarist Dick Wagner

I just love Dick Wagner! What a magnificent guitarists of all time! I had some free time today and decided to make another video of his music... Just l9ove this video and hope you do too... Iconic Frost tune Rock n Roll Music... I love it and love Dick too...

DETROIT: DEAD MAN'S HAND!

This is one kick ass cd! Ron Cooke (bass) gave me a copy and his 2wife Pam gave me a bunch of background info on it. This lineup never played live anywhere.... What a shame as they were a killer high performance team of musicians!

The whole recording took about 3 days to complete.. Spur of the moment whim with no rehearsal over a 15 day period. Unbelievable!!!

For 7 days you can have my favorite song off this cd "Stoned" written by my friend Ron Cooke

It's about Ron's rebellion... America and Europe is so used to pigeon holed music... that is what the music industry is like today...

"Art chose me at a very early age. As a descendant from a very passionate lineage my people were known for their expressiveness. My first inclination to artistic form was musical in nature. To me, melody and rhythm are akin to breathing and consuming oxygen. As I progressed in my career as a musician, I never saw myself as a side man in a top rock band ever. I am proud to say that I always carried myself and my craft as an artist. Coming from Detroit, Michigan and being exposed to the multi-cultural musical taboo that was commonplace to this town, I was witnessed to some of the greatest musical artistry and brilliance the likes this world has not yet recovered from. RETRO KIMMER: IGGY AND THE STOOGES IN ANN ARBOR

Iggy and the Stooges in Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater

Ann Arbor has been buzzing for over a week waiting for Iggy and The Stooges to finally appear in Iggy's hometown. The fans were busy trying to find tickets as they were sold out so fast... Scalpers were having a field day.

Luckily for me, My photographer friend Heather Harris hooked me up with two really fantstic seats. I was far enough back to miss getting splashed with Iggy's always present bottle of water.

Iggy and Deniz Tek (Anne Laurent photo)

The Stooges played 2 sets. First part was the Normal lineup. The second brought out Deniz Tek to play earlier Ron Asheton driven Stooges songs. Deniz played Ron Asheton's guitar! How amazing! Lots of folks were talking about Deniz's playing as if he were "possessed" by the spirit of Ron Asheton. Deniz played like himself to me. But, I have had the great fortunate to have seen him play before and at very close range.

Iggy Pop

This is the first time I have seen this band since 1970 I think. To me Iggy seemed very happy to be home and embraced that packed audience. Iggy was impishly warm and funny. Hi voice was fantastic and well the energy was just over the top. How does that man keep up that pace?

James Williamson and Steve Mackay

It was just really powerful to finally see James Williamson play live. I was going to go to his Ann Arbor meet and greet party but I was out of town working. Hopefully I will meet James eventually. Steve Mackay was unbelievable! The entire band was off the chart... Scott Asheton tore that kit up all night. If anyone has a good shot of Scott to share plz email it to me ok?

Mike Watt

Mike Watt was a total surprise for me. He is the most energetic joy filled bass player I have ever seen live. He was just so happy! Made me smile watching him enjoy playing music.

Great Richard Blondy shot of Deniz Tek at the after party. Deniz wrote me that he was still on a "high" even the next day. He said he didn't sleep that night. Very exciting historical moment watching Deniz work his magic on 4 songs. Deniz was very close friends with Ron Asheton so this Memorial was very dear to his heart.

My darling Motor City Rah Rah Wendy Starz (Mastal) was onstage dancing with Iggy when I walked in and saw her up there! turned out Wendy and her friend Jake had the seats to my right! YES we had a blast together and it was so sweet to be next to you buddies at such a huge gig!

I'd like to thank all my readers and friends who helped with this event/story. Heather Harris, Richard Blondy, Natalie Schlossman, Deniz Tek, Scott Morgan and The Stooges for coming out to A2! Most of all thanks go to Ron Asheton for the great music. XXOOK

RETRO:KIMMER HANGING IN ANN ARBOR WITH MY PALS!

Rick Ruiner Kimmer Deniz Tek Anne Laurent

Ron Perry of The Detroit Rocks Project was in Ann Arbor this past Monday interviewing many famed rock stars with huge Detroit connections and history. Met up with my friend Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman, The Golden Breed, and the Deniz Tek Group.

Deniz loves Detroit's music and was heavily influenced by Detroit's music while growing up in Ann Arbor. Deniz lived in Detroit while doing his residency from medical school.

Ron interviewed me as well... He asked me questions about how my blog began and who my heroes are in Detroit. We talked for about 45 minutes. Can't wait to see the finished film in it's entirety. Ron does so a great job and is so totally organized. Thanks Ron we all had fun!

Rick Ruiner came out to visit the set and hang with us. It was a really cool day to be in Ann Arbor.

My friend Heather Harris the Rock Photographer from Los Angeles flew in early Monday for the Iggy and the Stooges show at the Michigan Theater. I picked her up at the airport and she stayed at a hotel near my house in Ann Arbor.

Heather had a photo pass for the gig and I took her around Ann Arbor and showed her a few Stooges landmarks like Ron Asheton's house and Coachville Trailer Park where Iggy once lived.

Hiawatha Bailey Kimmer Deniz Tek Chris Box Taylor

After the day's shooting we went out to lunch and Heather and I lounged in the hotel jacuzzi and pool. We were gearing up for the Iggy show the next day. Got a call from Deniz who invited us down to the 8 Ball/Blind Pig and party a bit.

Scott Morgan Deniz Tek and Deniz's photographer friend Anne

We all arrived right at the same time. It was a lot of fun seeing Deniz and meeting his new girl Anne. Hiawatha, one of my favorites and Scott Morgan were there too. Heather had fun shooting pictures of everybody. We stayed for 2 hours and split to go get some rest for the Tuesday events.

Theresa and Chris Taylor welcomed their first baby boy... named Asheton after Ron Asheton Chris' friend and hero. What appropriate timing! Congrats you two!

RETRO KIMMER: STOOGES GIG AND DETROIT ROCKS PROJECT!

Hey gang! Kimmer is gearing up for a really fun time this week. Thanks to my darlings Heather Harris and Natalie Schlossman for hooking me up with fabulous seats for the Ron Asheton Memorial on April 19 at the Michigan Theater. That night is going to be red hot! I can't wait to people watch in the audience, not to mention seeing my friends play too.

Ron Perry and Mitch Ryder

Have so much on the schedule that I hope I can keep up!! (Sure I can...) Going to go meet James Williamson. Plan on meeting with Ron Perry of the Detroit Rocks Project on Monday. He wants us to do an interview for his movie! That will be big fun!

Designer/Detroit Rock aficionado John Varvatos of 315 Bowery (old CBGB's) is broadcasting live from the Ron Memorial for his Sirius / XM show Born in Detroit . JV will be interviewing Iggy and the Stooges, Deniz Tek, Henry Rollins, Scott Morgan, and asked me too! YAY

So tonight we are rocking out with Iggy and The Stooges!

ERIC POUILLE AND THE HOLY CURSE TOUR DATES

Eric Pouille and Mark Sisto

One of my favorite rockers that I have had the pleasure to meet is Eric Pouille lead vocalist for Holy Curse in France. I met Eric when Deniz Tek was in town for our Ann Arbor Rock N Roll Revival show 12/18/09. Deniz asked me to go out to Metro Airport and snag his friend who just landed.

When I walked into baggage claim I saw Eric immediately... He is very tall! So we had fun chatting on the ride back to the rehearsal studio in Ann Arbor.

Eric sang Deniz Tek's song "New Race" It was thrilling to see as the finale of the show. People came pouring into the Blind Pig from other nearby clubs. It was so much fun! I did capture it on video...

RETROKIMMER: MACHINEGUN THOMPSON MC5 VIDEOS

Had some big fun today making videos for my friends! I was trying to find a good video of Machinegun playing "Skunk Sonically Speaking" There was one but hey not one photo of the 5 in it. Well.... I have tons of images from Dennis' archives. So now we have a very COOL Machinegun video!

Called Den to let him know I was doing these videos and he said "It's about time you made something for ME!" Gotta love that guy!

Dennis wrote the music and lyrics for "Gotta Keep Movin" It is such a fun DETROIT RAW rock n roll tune. Machinegun is the bad ass drummer of Rock n Roll...

SCOTT MORGAN'S TOP 4 FAVORITE RATIONALS SONGS

I asked Scott yesterday to give me his top 3 favorite Rationals songs. He gave me 4. His list is #1 favorite "I Need You". That is my favorite as well. I was lucky to have gotten a ticket to see Scott sing that live at the Magic Bag the summer of 2009. This is the song that made hordes of teenage girls faint dead out when Scott sang it. Honesty and vulnerability from a boy who loves his girl....

Scott's #2 favorite is "Temptation's Bound to Get Me" Also my second favorite. The Rats harmonies in this song just sends me into a coma! I can't help but sing loudly along with the Rats and Scott on this tune. I couldn't find a decent video of this song so I made 4 Rats videos this morning to use for this story and as a gift to Scott and the Rationals bazillion fans.

How cool is this song? Temptation already got me I think....

These Ann Arbor guys made such a huge impact on Detroit rock and roll. Scott is working on a book and I can tell you he knows everything and everybody in the history of Detroit Music. Can't wait to read the whole story.

Scott's #3 favorite is Hand Bags and Glad Rags. I love this song and it's upbeat rhythm compared to the Rod Stewart's version.

Scott's #4 favorite is "Listen to Me" Scott is playing the congas on this song and I just love it. One night I was dropping Scott at a gig and this song came on my Jeep's cd player just as he was getting out. Scott heard the first 2 notes and hopped back in my jeep and said...."let's listen to me"! Well that's what we did... How cool is that??

Made one more video today to share....

SUNDAY SOUL WITH SCOTT MORGAN RETURNS!!

RETROKIMMER GOES TO THE PAJAMA JAMMY BANG!

Chris "Box" Taylor and Kimmer

In honor of my pal Chris Taylor's birthday Scott Morgan and I went down to The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor last night to check out THE BANG. Chris told me that this Mixed Tape Dance Party was created in 2001 and is still packing the Pig almost 10 years later...

Kimmer with Jason one of the creators of THE BANG

Jason was one of the original BANG creators. These guys really have a great time doing this show. The energy in the room was electric. So great to see a mob of happy folks dancing! Wild crowd too! Wearing the most outrageous outfits! Yeow!

The posters for THE BANG are created by BANG co-founder Jeremy Wheeler. Jeremy did the posters for The Ann Arbor Rock n Roll Revival 2009 that Chris and I produced and promoted. Jeremy is a very talented artist and DJ too.

Ten years worth of mixed tapes are kept in a big acrylic box. Look at all the different BANG themes below...

Chris and Scott Morgan

Great to see Scott Morgan together again with Chris his old friend and bandmate. Made a little video featuring THE BANG organizers while they blow up balloons LOL!

See THE BANG fashion!

ROB THOMAS: YOUR KISS IS ON MY LIST....

Rob Thomas

Hey I just found this video today. Daryl Hall is doing a live video show from his house and it is awesome! Rob singing with Daryl Hall is just perfect! At least to alot of us girls out here!

Of course I have had a mad crush on Daryl Hall beginning in 1975 and for Rob Thomas since he sang "Smooth" with Carlos Santana. I love Matchbox 20 too but "Smooth" just killed the competition on the billboard lineup. Great tune! Rob Thomas wrote "Smooth" too...

"Smooth" won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It spent a record-breaking ten consecutive weeks at the top of the VSpot Top 20 Countdown, a record that held up until the Dixie Chicks broke it in 2006. According to Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits by Fred Bronson, this is the number-one song of The Nineties (2003).

Rob Thomas wrote this song for his wife, Marisol Thomas. The pair married in 1999, after meeting backstage in 1998. Of Puerto Rican origin, she was the inspiration behind lines such as, "My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa" Thomas stated in interviews that the phrase "Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa" was inspired by the 1972 Elton John song "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", which includes references to the 1961 Ben E. King song "Spanish Harlem".

On Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs of the first fifty years of the Hot 100 singles chart, "Smooth" was ranked as the number-two song overall with "The Twist" at number 1.

NOTE FROM RON HANNAH: JOHN FRAGA (RIP)

Fragas

Kim,

A sad day for me, to find that my old friend has passed away. I lived with John, his brother Jim who was also a bass player, Marc Marcano (Rockets) and Drew Abbott (Silver Bullet Band) for a few years back in the early 70s in an old farmhouse on Auburn Road.

What a house full of music that was, always a band rehearsing in the basement. I spoke with John by phone a few years ago, and found that his brother had died, also of a heart attack. John was simply the most kind gentle and funny man I've ever known.

I hope he and his brother have put together and all-bass band wherever they are. I've attached a photo of John and Jim from a party many years ago. Not a great photo, but if you want to post it, feel free.

Thanks for putting such a nice tribute up on your web site.

Ron Hannah

Thanks so much Ron for the lovely note. I have received a lot of really nice letters about John.

DICK WAGNER::"SHE SAID"

DICK WAGNER: FULL MELTDOWN CD

Love this... Dick Wagner is thanking me?? Thank you Dick!

What a weekend at Kimmer's rancho deluxe! Yesterday Dick Wagner phoned in from his home in warm Arizona. Great to hear his voice and we talked music for awhile. We talked about guitars and the music scene around Ann Arbor during the days of the Gallup Park Sunday Free Concerts.

When I was like 14-16yrs the Rainbow People's Party through these huge shows on Sundays in the summer. This is where I first saw (The) Frost and out front was genius guitarist, songwriter, arranger, vocalist Dick Wagner. We both had really long hair back then!!! LOL

On my record player I wore out a few copies of Rock n Roll Music and Frost Music too. Playing that song right now still makes me wanna jump up and dance around my room! An anthem for my life to be sure. Dick Wagner's music never ages or loses it's edge.

Ever listen to Dick's lyrics? I absolutely love the way he writes about women. Most of the girls are in a positive light and then some not so much..... "Insatiable Girl" is one of my favorites from the Full Meltdown CD that Dick just sent to me. Also "She Said" is just beautiful

"Jenny Lee"
is another favorite from Dick and Frost... "Take My Hand" (I'll take you anywhere..." is another hot Dick song...

KJ KNIGHT'S NEW BOOK "KNIGHT MOVES" ARRIVED TODAY!

I met KJ Knight last year via the telephone and internet. KJ was writing his autobiography and forwarded me his manuscript. I was one of the lucky few to read this cool book well in advance. It was published February 25, 2011.

The crazy thing was the fact that I couldn't share the book with anyone and I didn't even retell any of his stories! There are tons of exciting stories in "Knight Moves" too! But I kept it to myself. Now.... It is finally published and you can get a copy of it from my Amazon Store link below.

Knight Moves: The K J Knight Story recounts the fascinating tale of a miscreant young rock drummer growing up in the Motor City during the 1960s and 70s-a dynamic time period in rock and roll history.

This is also the story of a teenage boy whose family is ripped apart by his father's infidelity and the dissolution of his parent's marriage. As his home life quickly deteriorates, he immerses himself in his music, moving from one band to the next.

In this no-holds-barred book, author K J Knight describes his life and career, including his repeated acts of juvenile delinquency and the capricious nature of the music scene, not only in Detroit, but all across the country.

KJ is such a great guy! Look who is on his fabulous list!! OMG KJ told me he was going to add me to his thank you page and there it is... LOL love the red arrow? ;) So gang... plz go and buy KJ's book it is a WILD RIDE for sure.... You won't believe this guy's life! I couldn't believe that sweet guy talking to me on the phone was ALSO that wild rock drummer in this book! WOW

Also in the Kimmer mailbox with KJ's book was a super fine pair of autographed Zildjian drumsticks! KJ remembered my request to add his sticks to my ever growing collection of autographed rock drum sticks. KJ's sticks will be includedin a gallery of very fine rock drumsticks of my friends Johnny "Bee" Badanjek, Machinegun Thompson, Tino Gross, Steve Godoy, Tony Bojanic and many more... Thanks so much KJ!!! xxooK

SCOTT RICHARDSON

Hey Kimmer-

Just a (long) line to tell you how much I enjoyed looking at your site. I was sitting in my cube at the Flint DHS office today listening to the Tigers opener, and cleaning up the end-of-month loose ends. One of the youngsters began to talk about 'things that are gone', namely Tiger Stadium. I told him they'd pretty much torn down most of my playgrounds like TS & the Eastown, & that the Grande was now a ghosthouse. Curious, I pulled up serveral links to the Grande; one thing led to another and I somehow wound up at your place.

I about filled my britches when I saw the pics of Scott Richardson. I remember watching them play at Mt Holly in '67 or so. Glen had the first Les Paul I'd ever seen. And I distinctly remember hearing Scott claim that he'd written 'I'm so Glad', even though there were those of us that new better. ;) Seems like everytime I was at one of the big halls, SRC, Frijid Pink, the 5, Seger or the Bossmen/Frost opened. There sure as hell was no lack of homegrown talent in those days. Those bands often blew off the headliners. But if the Stooges were on the bill and we took a date, we sat far back or in the balcony. No one wanted Iggy humping their girlfriend.

Best memories from those days;

Hiding on the Grande fire escape in between the 1st & 2nd Airplane shows in 11/68. Guy checks the escape, sees us, says 'cool', and goes back in. We ran inside when we saw the line begin to move, and parked our skinny asses about ten feet back from the stage. After the Airplane's set, Phil Lesh & Bob Weir came out to jam for an hour or so.

Walking out of the Grande with Fred Smith's Mosrite. The 5 were bound for Europe, and decided it would be a great idea to trash their gear before they left. After the guitar took a fearsome beating, Fred whipped it into the audience. It landed smack in front of me, and I latched onto it like it was the Holy Grail. I stripped off the electronics, and later traded the body & neck to a guy for his English-release John Mayall & Who collections. A guitarist friend who plays the eastern seaboard under the name of Wally Duke still has the pickup switch-knob. He transfers it from guitar to guitar. Bet Fred would get a kick out of that.

A Who show at Cobo in 7/70. It was the eve of my 19th birthday. We'd stopped at Eddie's bar along I-75 near John R and bought as much Bronte Red Port as our cash allowed. It made us exceptionally stupid. Primed by The James Gang, we of course rushed the stage when The Who kicked it off with 'Heaven & Hell'. Later in the set, I shouted for 'Armenia'. Townshend heard me, laughed, and threw a beer on us. I didn't clean it off my glasses for a week.

Good times... We don't get down to the city very often these days. A couple shows a year and a few Tiger games is about it. But I cherish those memories, and still own a few touchstones... a pair of seats from TS out on the deck, some Grande cards, and posters from the showThe Frost recorded at the Grande, along with posters for Wishbone Ash & Steve Miller at the Birmingham Palladium. Sites like yours help to keep it all alive... thanks.

Ps- The 'Bob Talbert's Detroit' video brought a tear to my eye when I saw the tombstone of Stormin' Norman. One hell of a ballplayer.
