**NEW DOCUMENTARY** THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI

NEW YORK--When a championship boxer like Muhammad Ali felt disrespected by another fighter, he might have been expected to do what most boxers would: knock his opponent's lights out.

But the icon took a different route when faced with a rival he thought looked down on his religion: He prolonged the fight, aiming to up the level of spectacle and pain. He also made sure his opponent knew his reasons for doing so. "What's my name? What's my name?" Ali's lips could be seen forming as he slowly demolished an opponent who insisted on calling him Cassius Clay.

The Trials of Muhammad Ali is a Kartemquin documentary exploring Ali’s lifelong journey of spiritual transformation. From his Louisville roots, through his years in exile, to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Trials traces Ali’s path from poet to pariah to global ambassador for peace. At each stage, the challenges Ali faces go far beyond the boxing ring and ultimately encompass issues of power, race, faith and identity that confront us all.

Directed by Bill Siegel and executive produced by Leon Gast for Kartemquin Films, the film will show Ali “as a fighter fueled by defiance, faith and a quest for justice.”

The Trials of Muhammad Ali is not a boxing film and has no highlight reel. Instead, it focuses on Ali’s toughest bouts: his decision to join a controversial religious group, his battle to overturn a five-year prison sentence for refusing US military service, and his struggle with Parkinson’s.

While other Ali films focus on his heroic exploits in the ring, they tragically under-examine some of the most noteworthy, provocative and resonant aspects of Ali’s life, such as his relationship with the Louisville Sponsoring Group, the Nation of Islam, and his Muslim faith.

In Trials, most of the interviewees have never been featured in any Ali film before, yet are central to his life story and the global impact he has made. Prior to becoming the most recognizable face on earth, Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali and found himself in the crosshairs of conflicts concerning race, religion, and wartime dissent.

In 1964, when the 22-year-old, Olympic gold medalist wins his first heavyweight championship, he shouts, “I shook up the world!” But his earthshaking has only begun. Soon he announces he is a Muslim, a member of the Nation of Islam, and takes a new name: Muhammad Ali.

After Ali is drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, he makes his defining expression of resistance: “No, I will not go 10,000 miles to continue the domination of white slave masters over the darker people of the earth.”

In 1967, after the US government denies Ali’s conscientious objector claim, he refuses military induction. The government convicts Ali of draft evasion, sentences him to five years in prison, and revokes his passport. Ali is banned from boxing and stripped of his title. He begins life in exile within the U.S., vilified in many corners at home, while becoming an international symbol of opposition to unjust war. See More

THE DICTATORS NYC, THE FLESHTONES, DENIZ TEK...AND LIVIDS @ BOWERY ELECTRIC MAY 30

You really couldn't pack more amazing REAL rock-n-roll into one night, could you? Well, the fine folks at Bowery Electric have done it. The DICTATORS NYC, led by the King Of Men, Handsome Dick Manitoba, features members of The Dictators, Manitoba's Wild Kingdom, Manowar, The Ramones and more. They shall absolutely decimate an already destroyed stage shared by garage R&B kings, THE FLESHTONES!

They have been doing their thing since 1976, so you know they know how to rock correctly! That would be enough, right? But we're taking it even further with legendary guitarist, DENIZ TEK, from Radio Birdman. You don't know who they are? Possibly the best Australian punk rock band ever. Deniz totally kills and you must witness it! Still not enough?

The icing on the cake is LIVIDS! Featuring Eric Davidson from New Bomb Turks along with former members of Zodiac Killers, Shop Fronts, Milhouse, Radio 4, Dead Ringers and Paper Bags, Livids have already taken the scene by storm with a string of now sold out 7" records.

Really? Are you still questioning coming out to this? Would it help you any to let you know that one of the greatest (and most well-dressed) rock-n-roll DJs will be spinning awesome music before, after and in-between the amazing bands? Well, it's happening. DJ Tony LoFi will be there. You should know him from Cavestomp! and One Chord Progression and a ton of cool bands.

NEVERMIND: MASONIC PAYS $10K, FORECLOSURE AVERTED

Well, that was quick! After just a day's worth of intense media coverage, the Masons staved off foreclosure of the Masonic Temple, negotiating a payment plan and handing the county treasurer $10K, reports Crain's. Seems like a pretty good deal, considering their unpaid tax tab was at $152,000.

The agreement demands a second payment of $36,000 come June. It's unclear when the entire bill must be paid off, but keep in mind: the $152K is reportedly just two years of unpaid taxes and associated fees. Unless a few of the Masonic's 1,037 rooms are stuffed with cash, logic tells us the Temple needs to make some major changes if it's going to stay afloat.

HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY....GEORGE JONES DEAD AT 81

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - George Jones, a classic country singer with a voice full of raw honky-tonk emotion and a life full of honky-tonk turmoil, died on Friday at the age of 81, his spokesman said.

Jones, whose career spanned more than six decades and included hits such as "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "Window Up Above," died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

He had been hospitalized since April 18 with fever and irregular blood pressure, spokesman Kirt Webster said.

Like his idol, Hank Williams, Jones battled addiction. Alcohol and cocaine frequently derailed his career and at one point his reputation for canceling performances earned him the nickname No-Show Jones.

But when Jones did show up and was in good form, listeners were treated to a powerful and evocative voice. Jones was at his best with cry-in-your-beer songs and his masterful phrasing made them extra mournful.

As his late contemporary Waylon Jennings put it, "If we could all sound like we wanted to, then we'd all sound like George Jones."

Born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931, Jones first began performing for spare change as a boy on the streets of nearby Beaumont. Under the influence of Williams, Ernest Tubb and Lefty Frizzell, he graduated to the rough roadhouses of East Texas.

The next two decades brought a string of top 10 songs - "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will)," "Window Up Above," "She Thinks I Still Care," "Good Year for the Roses, "The Race Is On" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which Jones said was his favorite. He also had a successful run of duets with Melba Montgomery.

Jones, who was known as "The Possum," divorced his second wife in 1968 and the next year married one of country's most popular singers, Tammy Wynette. The pairing was an enormous professional success for both as they recorded and toured together and Jones also began working with Billy Sherrill, Wynette's producer.

During his time with Sherrill, Jones refined his honky-tonk voice and sang more ballads, often with the lush string accompaniment that had become a trend in the country music capital of Nashville.

The marriage to Wynette went bad as Jones' addiction problem escalated and Wynette claimed he once came at her with a gun. They divorced in 1975 but later resumed recording together.

Jones continued to put out hit songs in the early 1980s, even as cocaine compounded his personal tumult. Amid a string of hospitalizations and arrests, he disappeared for days at a time, missed shows and recording sessions and took police on a drunken chase through Nashville.

Jones credited fourth wife Nancy, who he married in 1983, with helping him clean up. But in 1999 he was seriously injured after driving drunk and crashing into a bridge, leading to another stay in rehab.

MOE DALITZ: THE MOST ORGANIZED MOBSTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Morris "Moe" Dalitz (December 25, 1899 – August 31, 1989) — known as Moe Dalitz — was an American bootlegger, racketeer, casino owner and philanthropist who was one of the major figures who helped shape Las Vegas, Nevada in the 20th century. He was often referred to as "Mr. Las Vegas."

Morris Barney Dalitz was born in 1899 in Boston to Barney Dalitz and Anna Cohen. His father, , operated a laundry and taught Moe the business as he was growing up. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan and then Barney opened Varsity Laundry in Ann Arbor, catering to University of Michigan students.

Moe attended school in Ann Arbor and Detroit. And, his parents, siblings and cousins continued to live in Ann Arbor. He never got in much trouble and he died at age 90... worth 110 million.....he has to be the most successful gangster/ businessman of his era! The fact that he had such strong S.E. Michigan connections is fascinating. (j carver)

As time went by, Moe opened a string of his own laundries in Michigan before branching out to Cleveland in the 1930s. Once there, when Prohibition became law in 1919, he started bootlegging. he expanded his earning potential by becoming associated with the Mayfield Road Gang.

Police friend and Moe Dalitz

With access to the trucks used in the laundry business he started to smuggle alcohol to cities such as Boston, Cleveland and Ohio with his partners Louis Rothkopf and Morris Kleinman, amongst others.

Some sources declare that Dalitz was also a member of the Purple Gang and/or the so called "Little Jewish Navy", a crew of rumrunners, but that can be speculated. Dalitz himself later confessed he knew Purple Gang leader Abe Bernstein when he attended school and also worked with them in the whiskey trade, but was not part of the gang itself.

Dalitz became a big player in bootlegging and backed with the Purple Gang did business with Mobsters such as Vito Tocco from Detroit, Meyer Lansky from New York and Chicago boss Al Capone, amongst others. They even sold booze to Capones mortal enemy Bugs Moran. When Prohibition ended in 1933 Dalitz had become a well connected and rich man.

He invested in several legitimate businesses such as the Michigan Industrial Laundry Co. in Detroit, the Pioneer Linen Supply Co. in Cleveland, his real estate company called Dalitz Realty and the Detroit Steel Corp. During the 1940's he enlisted in the military and became a second lieutenant.

Through the Mafia he also became acquainted with Jimmy Hoffa and his Teamsters Union, which the Mafia would use as some sort of private investment bank. With all these financial means he decided to make investments in Las Vegas, Nevada.

By the time prohibition ended, Dalitz had opened several illegal gambling joints in Ohio and Kentucky. His two careers — legitimate business owner and criminal bootlegger and casino operator would combine to lead him to Las Vegas.

Backed by a couple of his Cleveland buddies such as Sam Tucker, he bought the Desert Inn which was then still under construction. The owner of the building had run into financial problems but was saved by Dalitz who bought about 75% of the casino.

The Desert Inn opened it's doors in 1950 and was a great success. In 1951 however he was called to appear in front of the Kefauver committee in Washington DC which investigated organized crime. There he admitted he was involved in bootlegging, but further denied his part in organized crime. By that time he had only been indicted once for bootlegging charges in Buffalo about 20 years earlier, but was acquitted.

In 1958 Dalitz made a second large investment when he took over the Stardust Hotel & Casino, which was first owned by gangster John Cornero until he suddenly dropped dead aged 60. The Stardust became one of the most known casino's in Las Vegas and grossed millions of dollars a year. It also frequently welcomed stars from the music and movie industry.

In 1966 the entire ninth floor of the Stardust was rented by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes and his entourage, who eventually bought the Desert Inn from Dalitz and his partners for about $13 million. Hughes would later on invest in a couple of other casino's with the means to remove organized crime from Las Vegas, his plans however were short lived.

By the late 1970's Dalitz was a respected senior member of the Las Vegas Casino community, but because of an incriminating article in Penthouse Magazine he suffered a sudden bad image when they linked him to organized crime. The article dealt about a resort build in San Diego called "La Costa" which they believed had been funded by Dalitz and the Mafia.

Dalitz denied these accusations and even sued Penthouse Magazine. Many friends of Dalitz also supported him by stating that he was a legit man who did much for charity. He had even been named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the American Cancer Research Center and Hospital in 1976.

Over the years Moe Dalitz had become very rich, FORBES magazine even placed him as one of the 400 richest Americans in 1981 with an estimated fortune of $110 million. He eventually passed away at the ripe old age of 90 in 1989. Much of his fortune was donated to several Las Vegas charities and his only child Suzanne Brown.

Legendary anecdote:When Dalitz got his 5'3 back up, no one could rattle him. There is the oft-told tale of Dalitz sitting in the dining room of the Beverly Rodeo Hotel in Hollywood. Heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, in an ugly mood from drink, approached the old bootlegger. Words were exchanged and the angry Liston drew back a powerful fist.

Dalitz did not move and his voice was not loud but crisp. "If you hit me, you'd better kill me, because if you don't, I'll make one telephone call and you'll be dead in twenty-four hours."

Dalitz's demonstrated that he feared nothing in provoking a man officially crowned the toughest fighter in the world. Rogues of the Midwest

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
'Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me, "Don't hang around"
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother And I say,
"Brother, help me please"
But he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees

Oh there been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Most meteor showers are spawned by comets. As a comet orbits the Sun it sheds an icy, dusty debris stream along its orbit.

Everyone knows the thought of wanting to change something, yet most of the time, there is a lack of power to take the decisive step. It can help to start small. Change a small thing ...

JPR-002- Bootsey X - Women's Love Rites 12" VARIANT PRE-ORDER
Jett Plastic Recordings is ecstatic to announce their second release, this time from former Ramrod and Lovemaster Bootsey X. For those of you who don’t already know, Robert Mulrooney (Bootsey) has been a staple of the Detroit music scene since the 80’s, and has been compared vocally to Iggy Pop (Of the Stooges. Many of these tunes have been performed in the live capacity, but in our opinion, they’re more striking on the studio recordings. Featured on the album are Ricky Rat (The Trashbrats), Mike Marshall (Rob Tyner Group), Gerald Shohan (Original Lovemaster), and Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry) whom provides instrumentation alongside being at the front of the production helm. The full length LP only release was also engineered by Jim Diamond (The Dirtbombs) at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit, Michigan.

FOLK SINGER ACTIVIST RICHIE HAVENS DEAD AT 72

Woodstock singer Havens, 72, dies of heart attack
By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer The Associated Press
Monday, April 22, 2013 5:25 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Richie Havens, who sang and strummed for a sea of people at Woodstock, has died of a heart attack Monday, his family said in a statement. He was 72.

Havens, a folk singer and guitarist, was the first performer at the three-day 1969 Woodstock Festival. He returned to the site during the 40th anniversary in 2009.

"Everything in my life, and so many others, is attached to that train," he said in a 2009 interview with The Associated Press.

Havens was born in Brooklyn. He was known for his crafty guitar work and cover songs, including his well-received impersonation of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman."

The singer's website said he had kidney surgery years ago and that he never recovered enough to perform concerts like he used to.

Havens performed at Bill Clinton's presidential Inauguration in 1993. He has released more than 25 albums. His last album was 2008's "Nobody Left to Crown."

"I really sing songs that move me," he said in an interview with The Denver Post. "I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business. That's what it's about for me."

A public memorial will be planned for a later date.

VOTE FOR ROBERT LEE REVUE "TROPICAL BREEZE" ON KJAZZ RADIO UK!!

Hey gang I want to let you know that www.kjazzradiouk.com has listed my very favorite Robert Lee Revue song "Tropical Breeze" from their first CD on the Fourplay Top Ten List.

KJAZZ Radio UK is very proud to present The Robert Lee Revue and Robert Lee Balderrama (aka Bobby Balderrama). From bursting on to the music scene in the sixties with hits like ’96 Tears’ with a band that had the uniquely different name of Question Mark & the Mysterians (…it was the sixties after all!), Robert Lee Balderrama now performs Smooth Jazz as The Robert Lee Revue.

Members of The Robert Lee Revue are fellow Mysterians cohort Frank Rodriguez on keyboards, Tom Barsheff on saxophone, Dr. Jack Nash on bass and Amy Lynn Balderrama keeps the beat on percussion along with drummer Rudy Levario. The group has fused on a sound that focuses on Smooth Jazz but is reminiscent of George Benson and Carlos Santana in style.
