BOOKIE'S CLUB 870 ANNIVERSARY REUNION
Monday, March 17, The Perfect Pitcher, Taylor
The club scene in 1978 was vastly different than it is today. Rock bars had live bands, but they played nearly identical sets of Top 40 Album Rock, 5 sets with NO original songs. The members of The Sillies decided to change that by putting on a concert at Bookie's Club 870, a gay bar with occasional rock clientele events such as an Alice Cooper movie release party in 1974.
After that weekend of March 17 & 18, 1978, owner Sam "Bookie" Stewart handed over the club to The Sillies to book concerts every weekend. What followed were shows by THE POLICE, IGGY POP, THE DAMNED, THE DEAD BOYS, ULTRAVOX, and J.GEILS as well as The Sillies, The Romantics, and other up-and-coming Detroit original bands. The building was eventually sold and burned down in 1990 but The Sillies have continued to hold anniversary reunions every year.
This year's show is at The Perfect Pitcher in Taylor and features NINE bands for $5:
3:00 - The MOD
4:00 - The Porcelain Doll Collection
5:00 - Pick Axe Preacher
6:00 - Christy & The Professors
7:00 - Dirty Mind In Detroit
8:00 - FASTERTAXI
9:00 - Bloodline
10:00 - Saturnine Hello
